I cannot think of a single good thing to do on turn 1 with mage now. Seriously? Am I just brain farting? Somebody help me out here.
No your just a braindead netdeck aggro mage player that can't think of the many other great Turn 1 Options for mage because they all are not Broken like Mana Wyrm is.
To be fair aggro mages have very few moderate to good 1 drop plays when compared to aggro paladin. Aside from mana wrym the class really wasn't designed around efficient 1 mana minions. You can't really say a player is braindead when the class honestly lacks many tools for a particular mana slot, even in wild.
Remind me when did mage ever have a tier 1 deck except for Frost mage? Quest mage for the first week of Ungoro release? Meme rng Yogg roulette? Mech mage for 2 weeks at GvG release? Classic mish-mash with 8 mana Pyroblasts?
Tempo has always been tier 2-3. All this talk of not being able to make powerful low-cost spells is ridiculous.
They didn't nerf the card because Mage or specifically this card was oppressive. There were times when Mage was tier 1 and Blizz never had any problems with Mana Wyrm.
They nerfed it because they intend to print a new powerful 1-cost minion for Mage soon, and they didn't want Mana Wyrm to eclipse it still. It was simply too good for a classic common from their point of view. They couldn't make any new cheap alternatives that would see play and wouldn't be blatantly overpowered. Check out the next set or a set after that, there will a powerful cheap Mage minion. Probably rare or epic.
What the hell is wrong with them? If they really wanted to nerf Mana Wyrm, it should've been done along with a new expansion, which enables other mage decks. Tempo mage is just above average with no other decks to back it up. Why is it ok to kill a whole class for 2 months for no reason?
I'm glad they finally nerfed it, but would have preferred if they opted to change its health from 3 to 2 (to put it more in line with comparable 1-drops such as Murloc Tidecaller or Lightwarden). Now it's almost a Mage-only Mana Addict, just not THAT bad. Well, whatever. Those who remember Tunnel Trogg (which, to be fair, couldn't even snowball as fast since playing multiple low-cost spells is easier to accomplish than constantly applying Overload) will be fine with this change.
Mana Wyrm gains 1 less attack but is permanent (fair trade-off right?)
But the problem is Mana Wyrm is also a Class Card and SHOULD be stronger than Mana Addict, the nerf to 2 Mana is like making Mana Wyrm a 1 mana 1/1 that grows its attack.
A 1 Mana 1/2 Mana Wyrm would still be acceptable might as well move it to HoF and revert the nerf.
With Every rotation Classic Cards get thinner and the power level of the set gets reduced that....pretty much does not matter if the set is Evergreen if you do not at least have a few build around cards in it (like Malygos) as auto-includes. Classic set NEEDS to have some of those cards, just like how other expansions had build-around cards.
I am really disappointed by the timing of the Mana Wyrm nerf and also by the nerf itself.
I really fail to see the reasoning behind this. Especially the timing.
Yes, it is a powerful card and it can cause an easy win for Mage if the draw is right. But it is actually rare that it happens. If you have it turn one, is on coin and have a 1-cost spell, but other than that, other decks can deal with it, and often do. There are plenty of cards for other classes that can cause an easy win, if the opponent has no immediate answer, even if they are not 1-cost cards. So it is the turn one that is the issue?
Now they have killed the only viable Mage deck on ladder at the moment. A deck that wasn't oppressive in any way, and offered no alternatives to it. If the card hindered Team-5 in adding new cheap spells, why not wait until next expansion when we get the new spells, and let Mana Wyrm live until then?
I have been considering starting up Gwent when it opens up next week instead of playing HS. I was getting a bit tired of this meta and the many nerfs to the mage class, which was the first class I fell in love with, when seeing other much stronger classes being left alone. I think this nerf made up my mind. For me personally, the game is not moving in the right direction. Team-5 keeps having focus on small adjustments/changes, when the game is in need of big changes. I have no faith that will change anytime soon.
If you're against this nerf because it completely kills Aluneth Mage, consider that if a broken 1-drop was your win condition, maybe it needed to be nerfed.

Life before death. Strength before weakness. Journey before destination.
Okay, that does it, that fucking does it, Blizzard keeps taking away cards from mage and giving nothing in return, Ice lance?, taken away, Ice block?. taken away, and now mana wyrm is equally taken away, while the cards mages get aren't even good, like seriousy fucking seriously, what has mage gotten in the past year??? Astromancer, Meteorologist, Deck of Wonders, Ghastly ConjurerDoomed ApprenticeColdwraith, the class has barely any playable decks and they keep taking away cards from the class, what does blizzard even want mage to do then???? sit there and bend her ass while applying lube??, i guess that's kinda hot if Jaina, but that's fucking useless, i'm kind of glad that this semester's workload has basically forbid me from logging in into the game and if things continue like that i'll seriously consider not bothering logging back.
The card has 64% Mulligan winrate. So the average winrate of tempo mage when this card ends up in the opening hand is 64%, it is huge. Say Northshire Cleric in Control Priest has only 58%, Flame Imp in Zoo is 59%. 64% is almost Keleseth numbers and there is only 1 copy of Keleseth. You got 2 copies of this. The card needs to go, it is op and annoying as hell.

It wasn't the win condition. You can and do win plenty games without Mana Wyrm, but it is the card that actually gets the deck the last few % to push it over to a positive winrate. Without it, it simply drops down to a winrate that is not going to get you anywhere in ranked.
This harsh of a treatment is undeserved. Mana Wyrm, a card since the beginning of Hearthstone, has now literally been dumpstered like War Axe.
I'd argue for a 0/3 wyrm instead of a 1/3, making it less painful to trade into and making the card more demanding of Mage decks to play lots of spells alongside it. Others would argue for a 1/2 and I think that would still be a little too strong in certain matchups.
No one is going to continue to play Mana Wyrm. Consider every other 2-drop in mage in comparison to this once non-control staple pile of trash.

Buff to even mage

It's fine, but I too would havd gone for 2 health so it keeps its use but becomes easier to deal with before it gets out of control.
As others said, it can trade with a 4/5 drop at times. Each time a cheap spell comes out with an expansion it only makes this card more powerful.
I think the change in mana cost puts it about right for the power level but I'm interested to see what mage class 1 drops are incoming.
Is this a good change?
-Yes
Do i like this change?
-NO GOD! PLEASE NO!!! NOOOOOOOOOO

Stupid nerf. Imo.

good thing the meta titan of tempo mage was nerfed. oh wait what its play rate is only 3-5%? sick change
