I was playing a similar mage deck in wild without Aluneth...did ok...ranked from 20 to 12 last month. This month is a little different, though. And Aluneth is probably necessary to climb to the higher ranks.
If you play just for fun and you don't care about end-of-month results and climbing the ladder, just craft whatever cards you wanna play.
Instead, if you want to improve your results and go for Legend in the future, follow this 3 steps:
1. Every time a new expansion hits, wait around 4 weeks to let stabilized the meta, without use any of your dust. Than, you choose wich Tier 1 deck(s) you wanna play and craft everything you need.
2. What you do in that first 4 weeks? You spend all your golds farming in Arena (no, you don't buy directly packs, investing in Arena is better for FP2), and you play with the cards you have in ladder.
3. After 1/1&half month from the release of the new expansion, stop spending golds on Arena runs: it's time to save golds for next expansion.
You will have to follow this tips... until you start to buy pre-orders ahahah

I agree with you BUT this does not apply for average players.
If you are an average player you can actually lose gold in arena (you need at the very least 4-5 wins consistently just to not lose gold and that's not really that easy).
Plus arena is rng fest these days.
I think you have more fun if you just spend your money (I mean gold) on packs directly. After 1-2 weeks of a new expansion you stop and start saving for the next one.
It's true, If you don't get at least 4 wins in Arena in every run, it's a bad investment. But for that, you just need to watch good arena streamers on Twitch, learn from them and help you with Heartharena.
4 wins are affordable, and Arena it's a good class to learn the basics of HS.
I have 1600 dust and I don't know what would be a smart way to spend it.
Here are a few of my options:
Craft Aluneth to buff my burn mage deck (I already have luna)
Craft key components to control warrior
Craft Lord Godfrey for a strong tech option in all of my warlock decks
Craft cards that could make some of my weaker Classes stronger
If you don't think any of these options would be smart, what do you think I should craft?
My legendaries: Genn, Baku, Alex, malygos, hemet, Countess Ashmore, P Keleseth, P valanar, Hadronox, Lynessa, Glass giant, Paladin hero, hunter hero, luna, Lunas galaxy, mage hero, warlock hero, rin, dragon caller Alana, skull o m, Shudderwock, grumble, boomship, Dr. Boom, Glinda, thrall, electra, tess, Edwin, face collector.
Sry for the long list I just want to make sure you guys understand what legendaries I currently own.
Lich King ?
Glass Giant?
Great ,I thought i have all Giants ,now I have to craft them for my all giants deck.
Leeroy Jenkins if you play any aggro deck, or The Lich King if you like slower decks would probably be good choices.
"A bargain forged in blood and shadow"
20 mana 8/8, Costs 1 less for each point of health restored.
Might make Kangor viable.

The Lich King would be my suggestion as well. Especially if you are looking for a legendary that can easily go in most decks
Craft Leeroy Jenkins.
He is always a viable aggro / combo option in every single meta and will never rotate.
Right now it can fit pretty well in zoolock / rogue / some paladins.
