Looks like an azure drake for mage to me. Toss the +1 spell damage and give it +1/+1, all you have to do is drop a water elemental on 4 which is still a beast. I like this card, pretty solid for mages.
You play this in turn 5 and draw a card in best case scenario, your opponent put a Doomguard in play for free, kill your elemental, play cube + pact and get x2 5/7 charge in your face, what a single draw will help you?
There is a reason midrange decks vanished out of the existence and the deck killed all of them will still around without any contender.
As long warlock cards remain untouched give up any midrange deck, if nerfed (VERY HARD NERFED!!!) this card and many others can see play.
If you are playing an elemental deck, you dont just have a 5/5 on turn 5, you probably have complete board control. Elementals are tough. Strong midrange minions that crush Kobold librarians and stuff like that, and stay alive to kill the Doomguard. I have played a ton of elemental mage, and I have beaten the greediest of warlock decks. If you put in the mix stuff like Archmage Arugal and Book of Specters trust me, warlocks will have a hard time.
You probably have a 2-health Tar Creeper on T5, sadly. Cube AND Control Lock variants adore any mid-range matchup not including a Spiteful Summoner, trust me. I played CL all expansion and queing into pre-combo dragon priest and Jade Druid was easily EASILY the most comfortable matchup outside of the Mirror.
One of the few cards that seems on the power curve to me. But will Mage have a deck that wants it? Not sure elemental Mage can beat either dude pally or Baku Hunter. So, I'm guessing that it's one of those good cards that just can't find a home due to bad matchups.
[edit] The problem with elemental decks is that there is no real synergy. They just activate each other for future turns and that's pretty much it. They don't buff (except Ozruk, the non-elemental minions) and they don't interact with each other while on the board. The dragon synergy is way more profitable than this one. Imho there should be a card, with forms a a good elemental package. Something, which combines the different deck-strategies with the elementals. The same way Patches was the missing link between pirates and aggro/tempo decks, now we need a link for the elemental tribe as well. Jaina is a good start, but I'm talking about something in the early/mid game.
Thing is, do you actually need to make a full blown Elemental deck to reap the benefits? The really important Elements with triggers are actually quite limited: Servant of Kalimos, Steam Surger, Blazecaller and now Bonfire Elemental. If you're gonna run Tar Creepers anyway, adding 2xFire Fly should be enough for triggering other Elementals -> Plenty of room for other archetype-shaping cards.
Heck, if you really wanna stretch it, pair of Fire Flies + Tar Creepers + Servants + Blazes can suffice. That's 8 cards, of which Tar Creepers are practically auto-includes in non-aggro lists anyway.
In Shaman's perspective, Snowfury Giant is a promising start, but needs more support to make Elemental/Overload (Control-ish?) hybrids a competitive choice.
Agreed for the most part, though you have to factor in the counter-synergy between Overload and the Elementals (especially the mid-late game minions such as Servant of Kalimos, Blazecaller or Kalimos, Primal Lord). By including Snowfury Giant your goal is to reduce its cost as quickly as possible. But an Elemental Shaman ideally wants to curve out which is difficult, if not impossible with the awkward turns created by the locked mana crystals. Also, unlike Mage Shaman has no viable 4- or 5-mana class-specific Elementals (Earth Elemental won't work in such a deck) so he relies solely on the Servant for future turns.
Thing is, do you actually need to make a full blown Elemental deck to reap the benefits? The really important Elements with triggers are actually quite limited.
First off, why do you bring up that 5/5 elemental? Can't you see that he is super slow, not impactful enough and thus weak? I would never include him in my decks, even if the battlecry didn't need an activation first (except maybe in shaman, because that class is desperate for draws). Every competitive deck wants to have a drawing mechanic on cheap minions, so that you can play them early on and cycle through your deck faster. This way you have more reliable turns in the future. The 5/5 elemental would never be part of the strong elemental package that mage will get eventually; he just doesn't do anything special, which others can't do.
Now, back to the most important topic: The problem with the elementals is 1) that they fulfill different roles, i.e. you can run lots of them at once, but they will just distract the main strategy of your deck, 2) again, there is no real connection* between them except the delayed activation, 3) only few of them have amazing abilities and/or bodies. The dragons had a lot more influence on the board/on themselves and they only required you to keep a dragon in your hand, not to make a complicated chain first.
About my 1st point - Just take a look at my classification from the user's post. Some elementals make more sense in a tempo deck (Water Elemental, Steam Surger, Blazecaller), others in a value one (Servant of Kalimos, Pyros, Tar Creeper) or are better in a combination with spells* instead. Not to mention, that some of the elementals can be easily replaced by other mage cards (Mana Wyrm instead of Fire Fly; Blazecaller with Firelands Portal, not an actual example anymore but you see what I mean). If you decide to keep the better cards, you will narrow down the number of the elementals in your deck and thus you will weaken the package more, but if you decide to keep the elementals, then you just weaken your deck instead. The point is - you have to be really picky in order to make the most optimal and beneficial package for your deck. Trust me, it's not a good idea to run all of them in a single deck - tried it, went downhill.
2nd and 3rd points - the elementals overall are meh bodies with a small upside. They reflect a mid-range style, which plays on curve. But you need more than that to be highly competitive - you need power turns, synergies, something to link them and/or minions with more influential effects. Because it's not really strong to play a 4 mana 5/4. then to follow up with a plain 5 mana 4/5 body. Do you see what Spiteful Priest or aggro paladin can do? The dudes have an amazing synergy (Lightfused Stegodon, Crystal Lion, Knife Juggler, Sunkeeper Tarim and what not). I don't suggest that we should make an aggro version out of those elementals, but at least something, which will form a nice package. Maybe an AoE, which doesn't kill elementals (just like Dragonfire Potion) or weapons for shaman, which buffs the minions etc etc.
That's for mage. I hope you don't mind, that I won't start a conversation about shaman, because this is the page for the mage minion after all and I'm a bit tired.
Tl; dr: "Plenty of room for other archetype-shaping cards" >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> Elementals
First off, thx for reading my novel. I think I have to thank people more often for doing that :D.
Secondly - you will rather save the Arcane Artificer, for when you want to play expensive spells (as you say). So you will keep him most of the time in your hand, until you get your value, i.e. you won't risk him just to activate an elemental's battlecry.
As for the rest of the "package", which you mentioned - well, I have to see it with my eyes. Currently there a lot of factors, which worry me and I can't mark it as good only by looking at its raw power.
The problem in creating a only-minion mage deck, is that there are no real win conditions. No AoE, no charge and no extremely powerful minions. Yeah, ok you can throw in a couple of Bonemares and Baron Geddon to solve some board. But a minion-only deck has two weaknesses: 1) minions have to go through taunts. 2) when you play a minion, it can attack only next turn, making it a target for removal, if it has no immediate effect that changes the odds of the game.
a minion mage is way too slow. The only potential win condition is Frost Lich Jaina, hoping to play her on turn 9

Zoo decks are a thing. Not often in Mage, but only because there is usually no reason to. There is now a reason to.
I think Mech Mage was actually a kind of zoo deck, and it was extremely good.

(And no, a zoo deck does not have to be aggro.)
I don’t think you understand zoo. Zoo minions have strong battlecries to fight for the board. That is what the elemental don’t have.

Hopeful about elemental mage! Not a single elemental cycling out with the year of the raven, so plenty of opportunities for elemental mage to become a thing.
This seems like a staple in every mage deck, not just elementals. I'm comparing this to Azure Drake, like many other people have. I can't think of a single deck that this wouldn't be worth running in. I was kinda hoping this would be a neutral/shaman card, but I'll live.

How could this be a staple in anything other than an elemental deck? It's trigger is based off of elemental synergy.

Oh, whoops I forgot about that when making my post. Now, it's not as good as I thought it was. Seems great for big mage though.
This card fits well in my theorycraft elemental mage ! :)
This is a really good card. But it will only be played if a mage deck with enough elemental minions is played. But I like it...

Very powerful, and it's even more card draw for Elemental Mage.

The only real connection is the mage heal package (Frost Lich Jaina + Baron Geddon + Arcane Artificer and maybe Tar Creeper/Ragnaros the Firelord in wild), but that package goes in a spell heavy deck.
A strong deck w/o many elementals and spell-based - this is how grinder looked like, now turned into Big Spell.

I'm not sure elemental mage will work, but if it does, it will include Spiteful Summoner.
If you want to play elemental mage, you put this card in your deck every time! 5 mana 5/5 which draws you a card. OPOP

Minion elemental mage confirmed.
This card is no operative but it's decent.
