I've been avoiding making Bloodmage Thalnos for over 8 months now, because there's honestly always something better to craft. But lately I've noticed just how many decks actually use him, and I've begun to ask myself if he's actually a solid and necessary addition and not just an unnecessary luxury like I've thought. I have 900 dust right now, so I just want to know if there's any good all-around substitutes for him, or if I should just grind out some dust and finally craft him.
He's one of the best legendaries that keeps seeing play in both formats, wild and standard, that's how good he is. However, you can substitute him. Now as to what you want to substitute him with, well that depends on what your deck needs. Is it spell power or draw? Depending on what it is you can either consider Loot Hoarder or Tainted Zealot.

He is definitely just a luxury, cause it provides that little tidbit of Spell Damage and cycles itself at the same time. Definitely not a core of any deck. I mean obvious replacements r Tainted Zealot/Kobold Geomancer or Loot Hoarder depending on what part of him u want to replace, but at that point, these replacements wouldnt rly be worth it for the most decks that use him, so u would just put another better card in instead.
Thalnos is my most used card I believe. As a rogue player who loves N'zoth I suppose that should be inevitable, but imo he's worth the dust. Worst case he get's moved to hall of fame, you get your dust back, and he's still in your collection for adventures into wild format.

This. If you don't absolutely need both the cycle and the spell power in one card then go with tainted zealot or loot hoarder and save yourself the dust.
Man no matter the use, Bloodmage Thalnos is the paragon of a perfect legendary card in Hearthstone. You can literally put him in any deck and find good use of him. The card draw, the spell damage, the entrance, the attack, on death, you'll enjoy it no matter what and I promise you, you will not regret the 1600 dust or 3200 dust if you want it golden. This card is undisputedly the safest investment you can make in Hearthstone.
How many legendaries do you have? He's one of the best and he Isn't going anywhere anytime soon, but as a poster above said, he is a luxury. He Isn't going to win games on his own, the decks he's used in usually contain a lot of legendaries. He's not a great craft for a small collection.

I agree with that, he is probably the safest legendary to craft, u will never regret crafting it, cause u can put him in any deck basically, yes.
Tho as said before, he is in no way a core of any deck, like DK Anduin or DK Guldan are for example, so since the OP has very limited amount of dust, i think he can safely forget about Thalanos for now ;-)
Crafted him a few months after picking HS up and the only thing I regret about it is not crafting him earlier. He's just so versatile it's crazy, you can even play him for a soft-taunt, just the card draw, or to boost an aoe, because he's cheap.
Unless you're playing decks that don't need spellpower, you might stick with something with that gives you only card draw. If you're going to play Control Lock, get Tainted Zealot for Defile shenannigans, as you can draw hard with your hero power. Apart from that, it's Bloodmage Thalnos 4 life. Probably the best and most useful card in Standard since Azure Drake got pushed into Hall of Fame.
I'm a F2P player, and I bit the bullet to craft him about a year ago, and I'm glad I did.
I mean, he's definitely a luxury card. He's not gonna win games by himself, but I love how flexible he is. He's useful in a lot of situations, and is often one of my first choices in a "I've still got a couple of spaces to fill in this deck" situation.
Having said that, I'm a deck builder. Most of my time on HS is spent making new decks for fun, and the flexibility of Thalnos is great for that. If, however, you'd rather be competitive on ladder, I'd recommend crafting the required legendaries for a tier 1 deck. And if you're going to do that, wait until the current meta has been established first.
Harder when you don't tell us what deck you want him for. He has different uses in different decks.
Right now I've been experimenting with a lot of different decks, but mainly I've been using Tempo Mage, Big Spell Priest, Big Spell Mage, and an Oakheart-less Rin Warlock. Bloodmage Thalnos could probably only fit in Big Spell Mage or Warlock, but I'm still torn on him.
Thalnos is the safest craft in hearthstone, however, any deck can work without him as well.
If your goal is to play a lot of different archetypes and you're struggling to gather the dust for it, I wouldn't bother with Thalnos, but if you're satisfied with the decks you have available for now, craft Thalnos, it's a great card.
There's no card that quite does what Thalnos does cause decks that use him usually need the spell power but also highly appreciate the draw from the deathrattle, and I know the feeling of always being something better to craft, like you think if crafting a busted warlock DK or a 2 mana 1/1 and in a vacuum that awfully powerful card always wins but honestly Thalnos is always in at least 2-3 to tier decks every expansion, is just better to get it out of the crafting list as fast as possible. As for replacements well I guess is best to realize what is the most crucial of the 2 options Thalnos has to offer for your deck, if you really need the spell power then just pack a tainted zealot, if your deck needs a little bit more draw then go Loot Hoarder but as with any other legendary, no other card does what they do, that's the whole point of em'

Crafted him way back
Haven't used him once because I realized i'm a stubborn midrange player that doesn't rely on aoe.
Still regret nothing.
He's solid
Question everything.
Cannibalize your entire collection, including golden, and dust literally everything that you are not currently using.
This is the only way to make competitive decks with all the cards in them.

Thalnos in the second best legendary after Patches at this moment. Craft him asap
One day this game will stop existing. I can't wait.
