Can you actually build a deck that quickly pulls out all minions from the deck and leaving only spells? and thus making this spell mediocre again? there is a lot of recruit mechanics now and if you have a few key recruits that quckly leaves only spells and you then follow up with Animal CompanionTo My Side! and Call of the Wild for minions. it could actually be ok. somehow. i think. will test it out.
I could see this card work in some kind of "Deathstalker-Control-Hunter". Basically 29 spells and Deathstalker Rexxar. But, hunter is missing far too many tools before such a deck could become viable. (What am I talking...it would be more meme deck.)
And a Hunter deck with no minions! I get it, you want players to use Deathstalker Rexxar, the secrets and summon spells, with other control cards. Is such a deck even viable? I'm not a Hunter main. We have to wait and see, perhaps after the next rotation.
And yes, the wording really should have been "Summon 2 Animal Companions, or 3 if your deck has no minions."
I've tinkered with secret hunter because I got professor putricide in one of my early packs. If you're lucky the secrets, release the hounds, kill command, and deadly shot will keep you alive long enough to draw DK Rexxar and outvalue your opponent with custom-made zombeasts. I've not even considered it with zero minions, hurt it's an interesting thought experiment
I don't really think that casting "animal companion" twice in turn 6 is enough.
What's more interesting is that this is another deck-construction restraint. I think we've seen the last of Highlander, so "no minions" can join "no x cost cards" in new deck limits.

And we've seen how deck restrictions lead to very powerful archetypes because the effect you get is worth the cost. If the devs are aware enough of Hunter's existential crisis in hearthstone that they are designing a new deck building technique for the class i think they will also include a significant reward as well. I'm expecting Titanstrike or Thoridal to go well with these new "no minions" decks.
I could see a Hunter deck without minions, if it's given enough support. I don't really like the prospect of that though, since it would probably mean some extremely broken cards akin to Kazakus or Reno Jackson that decide the game if drawn on curve, just to make the archetype viable.
They want secret Hunter to be a competitive deck. It will never happen because it goes against the nature of Hunter as a strong-minion, beast synergy, midrange or Aggro deck. By turn 6, you are either about to win or about to concede. I wish they got real players to test the new cards as a part of a deck against other players. This is a terrible card.
I was thinking maybe, just maybe a recruit heavy deck, that while still being somewhat spell heavy, you'd pull your creatures out of the deck, allowing this to be used.
I'm still thinking about this card. How could it be this bad?
Could it perhaps be that it's not random but works like discover. You get to chose the (2) animal companions???
Should imo work like this since its not random still no ofivial word how this card actully even works. But since its not random it should indeed work as a discover, which would also explain the manacost...people here actually create a shitstorm over a 6 mana card with 8 facedamage...

THIS IS THE MEMETA DEFINING CARD! The King of MEME CARD in this expansion!
This card is an insult to all the people designing creative Hunter cards for months now.
Take that, Swashburgler!

Basically the Toxic Arrow of this expansion. You all know you will open at least 5 of them in your pre-order packs.
Custom cards :
CLASSES : Alchemist (CCC#5 | Phase V) | Chef (CCC#4)
EXPANSIONS : Year of the Scorpion (Year Comp)
Tracking on 1.
Explosive Trap on 2.
Eaglehorn Bow or Animal Companion on 3.
Barnes into [card]Y'Shaarj, Rage Unbound[/card] on 4.
???? on 5.
This or Deathstalker Rexxar on 6.
You got the idea. If hunter's weapon any good and costs 5 or 7, I wouldn't autodisenchant this.
Behold Ragnaros the Firelord! He who was ancient, when this world was young!
This is the final piece of evidence to confirm my suspicious about devs not playing their own game.
I voted Mete-Defining because it's cards like this that keep Hunter out of the Meta
when blizzard makes this type card makes me sad :(
O hope to get a golden one!

It would be interesting if the condition were "No minions in your hand."
