The problem with not running cheap spells is that you can't really deal with the early game, and the best mage minion at dealing with the early game is manawyrm which is unplayable in a deck with no cheap spells.
Remember when one of Warlock's unique trait was that it has "Deal damage to ALL minions removal"? Yeah, that's gone now. Priest has a better Twisting Nether and Mage and Warrior have better Hellfire / Felfire Potion...
Btw, this is already good if it hits a 3 mana spell. That means apart from Frostbolt or Glyph you'll always go even.
First Psyquick scream is worse than twisting nether...
Tirion, Cairne, N'Zoth, Aya and others one milion minions don't agree with you.

Even if it gets a 2 mana spell at worst, it's a Volcanic Potion , and in some cases that's good enough. With secrets is a 3 mana AoE. With everything else is just a way better Flamestrike. Just wait for the 3 (or even 1 with the new mage rare) mana Dragon's Fury
This is pretty nuts if you just run 2 of these, 2 Blizzard, 2 Meteor, and 2 Flamestrike because you can just keep chaining board clears and then just get to turn 9 and play Dragoncaller Alanna to fill your board with 5/5s
So, they are really pushing mage to only run expensive spells. It is just too bad Frostbolt, Primordial Glyph and secrets like Ice Block are the best cards the class has. I am not sold on this...
Flamestrike is 7 mana deal 4, Volcanic potion is 3 mana deal 2, with secrets as the cheapest spells this is 5 mana deal 3 in worst cases ... Wasn't sold on it at first glance, but the more I think of it, it might be worth running.
Frost Nova +Doomsayer is 5. Usually, the mage gameplan is to freeze to stall rather than to full clear in slower decks. The problem is that your opponent can usually set up something nasty by turn 5, especially if you are forced to cut your cheapest spells...

Didn't mage already have flamestrike from the basic set? Rogues have fan of knives, warriors have whirlwind, priests have holy nova, druids have swipe, shaman's have lightning storm, Paladin have consecration. All from the basic and classic sets. Dealing damage to all minions is not a unique trait of warlocks because most classes already had access to AOE's since the start of hearthstone.
My concern about most of the mage cards revealed so far is that they seem to have this random element to them. Not sure if I am a fan of how RNG these cards are. This can be a powerful board clear especially if you hit a high cost spell, but it is a bit rng dependent.
Alright can we please stop with all these gorgeous artworks featuring fire spitting Dragons? Everytime I see one I feel compelled to craft the card in golden and if we keep going like this I'll run out of dust.... Anyway, artwork aside YES YES and YES this is the one Mage card I wanted to see.... If you flip a Secret you're still likely to clean the board against Aggro and anything costing 4 mana or more is basically a discounted Flamestrike or even better.... And there's always Primordial Glyph that can make this cost 3.... Control Mage might be in a good spot when the expansion comes out.... I think that the cards are there the problem is that horrible Priest MU and we all know the meta is gonna be infested with them....

Extremely annoying to read the reviews on this thread. Superficial, probably written by people who have never touched a control deck ...
The card is broken, I do not have to say, considering the current mage, the average mana is about 4.5; 5 mana, 4/5 dmg AOE is broken.
What's the point then? Consider a normal round 5 in matchup where this card is needed, against aggro and Tempo decks. Do you want to play an AOE without knowing if it will actually clear the board? The control decks should not be randomly based AT LEAST in the basic mechanics of removal ... the card is DANGEROUS for the game, intended as pseudo competition (which is already reduced rather badly).

"ALL minions damage". Those only do damage to your opponent. It used to be one of warlocks unique things, but got diluted over the years, but now they are straight up outclassed by other classes in that department.

It's nice to see how much dragon themed content we still get several expansions down the road --> Dragon Mage? Dragon Priest?

Burgle Rogue Backstab hype!
Time to make an Elminster/Raistlin build.
So big spell mage is going to be a thing I guess
How is it that mage ALWAYS gets the bests epics?

Firelands Portal is on the chopping block this April. Will be interesting to see what new big spells replace it in order to support this archetype.

Hard nerf to Freezing Potion
j/k this seems okay though. Probably not good enough but you might be able to build around it to ensure value.

Pretty gud but mage already has so many AoE spells. I doubt this will see that much play.
Why u hav to be mad? is only card gaem.
Big Spell Mage seems neat, but do you need this when you are almost certainly running meteor and flamestrike to trigger it?
lovely card!!
