You don't even have to play with only super expensive spells to make this work. At 3 damage this is great, and that just requires taking out Frostbolt and Glyph. Or maybe you can accept the risk of it dealing 2 damage and run those cards anyway, similar to how Big Priest runs Barnes for the high roll. As long as you have maybe 70-80% 3+ spells in your deck, it should be decent.
However, clearing the board has never been a weakness of Mage (excluding oversized boards, like from Doppel + Evolve), what Control Mage has been lacking is healing. You end up taking chip damage over time and it becomes really hard to stabilize. You might draw Frost Lich or Alex on turn 9, but if your opponent has a decently sized board, that's not going to save you. Or you might be facing an OTK deck like Razakus, in which case they'll bring you down to 1-ish health, popping the ice block, and forcing you to heal on the next turn. But you can't do that efficiently enough while also removing their Velen from the board. This card is strong, but it's not going to make or break Control Mage.
Remember when one of Warlock's unique trait was that it has "Deal damage to ALL minions removal"? Yeah, that's gone now. Priest has a better Twisting Nether and Mage and Warrior have better Hellfire / Felfire Potion...
Why are you talking that up like it's a great trait? it's not that interesting.
So, they are really pushing mage to only run expensive spells. It is just too bad Frostbolt, Primordial Glyph and secrets like Ice Block are the best cards the class has. I am not sold on this...
eh i don't know man 5 mana deal 3 to all is pretty decent, i think you still run either frostbolt or glyph based on preference but not both together, also, Deck of Wonders gives you 5 copies of Scroll of Wonder so it makes it easier to have this being more damaging, overall a great card, and here i thought that once gadget rotated in April most classes were going back to being trololol facesmorced by aggro like in old-gods and kharazan's vomit-hand faster than opponent cuz no AoE Metas
Guys why are you saying it's bad? Yeah it's a shame you cant run frost bolt and glyph to be consistently good. But even if you get ice block, 5 mana deal 3 is still pretty good since 5 mana Kazakus deal 4 is picked quite often. Yeah it's not as strong as Kazakus potion but you can run two and it's not RNG potion ingredient and doesnt require prior Kazakus play.
It also has synergy with big spell archetype they're trying to push. With all new armor gain from spell card, board clears and good mage minions revealed so far, it's quite viable control tools after ice block rotates.

It has identity (dealing damage to your own minions is rather cruel and evil) and is used as a balancing tool (2 damage to enemy minions costs at least 1 mana more than dealing 2 damage to ALL minions). Giving other classes that throws the first concept out of the window and makes Warlock's AoE less good in comparison, since everyone has it. Not that there is necessarily something wrong with it, but it's still something to point out. It's like giving Druid Overload or Priest an early game weapon.
I will still run x1 Glyph and x1 Frostbolt in my Highlander mage, I take the odds because I always will keep any of them in mulligan and will run Meteor, Blizzard, Firelands Portal, Flamestrike, Polymorf, Fireball and Tome.
Ideally, it would hit at least 5 around 65% of the time so you can kill a Cobalt Scalebane that was played on curve. Really powerful card for control mage though. The AOE introduced in this expansion is on a rather high power level.
Idk why everyone thinks the card requires only hight cost. Even hitting a secret is better than excavated evil was. I think the card will definetely see play and will be the bane of aggro. But if it is good enough to push aggro away from the meta, in control vs control matches, people will learn to play around it and just wait for the card to lose value.
From all class card we saw I'm pretty sure there will be a new archetypal Dragon Mage, quite good, at least Tier 2 in my opinion.
Dragon mage? which powerful cards with dragon synergy does mage has? and the new legendary doesn't give synergy, just is good agaisnt dragonfire potion, and that's it.
Worst case scenario is a 5 mana deal 2 damage... a little bit worse than Consecration and Holy Nova. If you roll a secret you'll have an Excavated Evil. This card is super solid, even if you play a big mage with Frostbolt and Primordial Glyph

I think Deck of Wonders is a meme card, the spells have random targets, y'know, and it is slow as f.
Also remember that you have to run some big, slow spells to make this good, which means you will easily get some clunky do-nothing turns early, while your opponent is adapting their minions and closing up on lethal...
Good indeed, another excellent mass removal. Let's finally hope in the death of aggro decks.
For what profit is it to a man, if he gains the world and loses his own soul?

Holy Wrath is crying
They seem to be really pushing control decks.
Mage gets this... Priests are, well Priests... Warriors now have a great board clear spell...
I wonder how this all plays out...

Big Ez Mage!
English isn't my first language, so please excuse any mistakes.
I theorycrafted this big spells deck. What do you guys think?

...
Good card, now Big Dragon Mage Deck comes in this new Expansion
While I'm happy they're really trying to kill aggro, they need to add better rewards for trying to ladder with control.

This is good from 3 damage up. All Mage has to really cut is Frostbolt. Deck of Wonders has great synergy with this
