The best thing about this card is its ability to bypass drawbacks. Lakkari Felhound and Doomguard love getting summoned for free. Also, unlike the old Voidcaller, it summons from your deck, not your hand, so its like having draw a card tacked onto that card.
On the downside, it is expensive and slow, a 2/2 body isn't much of a threat on its own, unlike voidcaller's 3/4 body, and deathrattle is prone to being silenced or activated at a time of the opponent's choosing. It also prevents you from running the really good cheap demons this set added, as you don't want to spend 5 mana on a 2/2 body that summons a 1-or-2-drop.
Seems playable since a lot of the demons have negative battlecries which are bypassed. Get a doomguard without discarding or a pitlord without taking damage.
At first I thought it was battlecry and I was like is this card good? I thought about building mid range decks around it with no demons under 4 mana, only krul, doom guard, 6/6's (abbysal enforcer and dread inferno), despicable dread lord, lord jeraxus, and malganis in wild.
Then I saw it was deathrattle and I lost all interest.
In wild there's the 4 mana 3/4 void caller that summons a deamon from your hand and it's bearly playable, comparing the two and you know why this card is bad 5 mana 2/2 vs 4 mana 3/4
The two legendaries aren't near being competitive, this card is just a joke and the four mana Cataclysm? - it mainly supports the quest warlock deck, which is kinda clunky atm.
But I'm not even angry. I'm more than happy with the cards from disguised toast's reveals, because there are a nice support for both control and zoo and resonably cheap (dustwise). Of course, I would welcome more good-quality cards for my favourite class, but seeing, that weapons are meeting the same fate as the quests back in Un'Goro (ok, they are a bit better designed) and how the good warlock cards don't require you to spend a lot of dust on legendaries, I'm fine with that. Can't wait to see the other two missing cards and the neutral minions, so I will get to start deck-buildin'.
Really curious with all the new taunts warlock got (including demons), whether or not Stonehill Defender would be a nice inclusion in the controllock deck. Because we all know including that 9 mana demon will become in many, many cases a dead card, so I woild like to know of the demons in the warlock class would justify the usage of the defender. . . . The only thing, that however kinda bothers me, is how blizz concentrated many good cards in one class (priest), while the support in the other ones is equally split. Wouldn't have been that entilted, if it wasn't for that Psychic Scream bs.
Many control lists run Stonehill Defender already atm. Just a decent body against aggro and gives you value in control mirrors.
Maybe, but I was never impressed by the outcomes people had, when running it versus me (playing slow decks).
Right now the taunts you will probably find, are the class ones listed here. And tbh it happened once in a game or two, where people managed to find a LK against me, so they got nice value out of the defender, but most of the time I saw either the lurker or the 1/3 minion. So that's why I was asking. I understand the power of this card and the usefulness of being able to block some damage, to give you gas and stall you the game, so that you will find your late-game stabilization tools, but it's just that for me the outcomes can't compare to those in paladin, shaman or even warrior. You mostly choose between neutral taunt minions, which by default are often mediocre (with some minor exceptions).
That said, that's why I think, that Stonehill Defender will now become even more popular in warlock and thus I will change my opinion about him there. From decent it will get good, so I'm in.
I think this card's decent. Potentially fits into a nice 'big demon' style deck alongside Man'ari. I'm planning on building one anyway. Dinomancer for discard synergy, early spells against aggro, Doomguard + Lakkari Felhound to stabilize in the mid-game, then just lots of high roll demons to pull/play.

Thing is, Warlock has so many intrinsic board clears (like Twisting Nether, Defile, etc.) that stalling for a few turns lets you draw/play those. And the Death Knight is so unbelievably powerful over time it doesn't even matter.
It's one of the reasons I think Rin is okay in Control Warlock. Blocking attacks is valuable in a class that can't get burned down very well after 10 and can clear the board so easily.
Except the average "Big Demon" is a 6/6 so really not worth it.
I'd rather pay for a pitlord for 5 health and 4 mana.
I think it's worth it, but generally more for Voidlord, Dreadlord, Lakarri Felhound and Doomguard. Rather than just a single Infernal. Though even the Infernal is good. You thin your deck, summon another demon for your Gul'dan play. The biggest issue I see is in the current meta, turn 5 is where Cobalt Scalebane drops, so you probably don't wanna play anything weak that turn. This will probably see play in Egg-Warlock decks. It's basically the exact same thing. Just a more valuable devilsaur in a more expensive egg.
This card is extremely good. Put only a few giant demons in your deck and pull them at will. It's very comparable to voidcaller but doesn't need the demons to be in your hand.
You can get some huge mana savings on stuff using this card.
it's great when you only take voidlords as demons, not sure whether I like these guys or skull better.. trying both out in my current n'zoth deck to see which works better, and might even end up including both. it does seem a bit much for only pulling 2 possible demons, but with cubes you have the potential to make more, then bring back with gul'dan and n'zoth.
deck is in my sig is anyone would like to offer any advice... it's one of my first decks this meta I have been brewing in my head for a few days now. not tested it yet so it;s still just theory craft. would be awesome if you guys could drop some thoughts on it though, would mean a lot.
loving this expansion so far, warlock is in a great place :)
this and skull man'ari itself (as individual card) isn't too strong but when you combine them into one deck it surprisingly good because consistent synergy .If you draw big demon the skull will summon it,if not this guy will help you tutor it still slow but better than i thought
Blizzard seem to value the recruit mechanic so much that all of the minions that have this ability have god awful stats for their cost. However I originally thought that recruit would be a cool mechanic because of guild recruiter having it as a battlecry effect and the theme of calling other minions to help you. But pretty much all of the other recruit minions are deathrattles which I find baffling.
The fact that these are deathrattles mean that you are stuck with a horribly statted minion for a high cost that do not make an immediate impact on the board. And also it kind of does not make sense to me from a theme standpoint because why would you be recruiting something if you are already dead?
BAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA. Is it too late to take back everything I said about this card? I missed the mark entirely on how powerful this thing was going to be.

jokes on every noob that said that this card was bad, it actually showcases the true power of recruit,

Please delete this unfun, uninteractble card.
Hi
I like Hearthstone and animals. I play Beast Hunter. I get to Rank 15 so I'm pretttty goooood. :D
It's too funny to read the reviews on this card
turns out possessed lackey is pretty good!
This is yet another proof. I will trust in myself from now on :P
