It's always been that way, from what I remember. It's kind of an order-of-operations thing: Counterspell activates as a spell is in the process of resolving, before Flare has a chance to truly activate.

Behold, foolish interlopers! I am commanding this mortal to spread the will of the Scourge throughout the interwebs, encouraging you to seek out me, Archlich Kel'Thuzad! Now coming to you as the tenth class of Hearthstone!
I am a finalist in this Class Creation Competition, so if you could give it a look I would be greatly appreciative <3
I think I saw a video where Yogg cast Flare and it successfully destroyed a Counterspell and an Ice Block or something. I think it would make sense, but I feel like I could be mistaken about one of the secrets being Counterspell. Does anyone know if this is a thing?
If you think that's interesting, Counterspell is ignored by Djinni of Zephyrs. Djinni of Zephyrs still copies the buff you were going to give to a minion even though your spell was countered.

I think part of that is because Djinni doesn't care if you successfully cast the spell; it merely flags Yes/No on the event occurring. He doesn't concern himself with the minutiae of spell-casting heh

Counterspell says "When you opponent casts a spell, counter it." Well, that player's opponent didn't cast Flare, Yogg did. Same reason why playing Yogg when you have an Auctioneer out doesn't make you deck yourself.
Initially this made sense to me, that counterspell “counters” flare from going off, because I thought the point of counterspell was as if you didn’t cast the spell. But then in tavern brawl this week, even if you counterspell their spell, they still get the minion off of it. So it still counts you casting the spell, it just doesn’t give you the benefit of the spell. I think it’s a confusing and silly way to determine how it works honestly and should be changed. Either make it so counterspell completely counters any benefit from the spell completely, because that would make the most sense. Or have flare take priority over it.
I thought that flare would destroy Counterspell, I played Flare earlier and it lost to Counterspell...
As much as I hate that, flare has always been like that. Since flare is a spell, counterspell triggers first and counters it.

Come visit my Card Emporium. Strange things, you will find inside...
Come take the test, if you're daring. Feel free to show me your results in a message.
@DeadCops Counterspell can only counter spells you play from your hand, which is why the difference between play, cast and summon is important.
