It seems any classic (free) card that is a must include will be a nerf target. A lot of recent nerfs have been to classic cards. They aren't making money when Hex is better than the new expansion cards.
I don't like this change. I think what it should have changed to was keeping it at 3 mana, but instead increasing the stats on the Frog to 1/1 with taunt or a 0/2 with taunt, which makes it better for the opponent you cast it on then the sheep they get with Polymorph.
Even though Hex is not always played in the more aggressive Shaman decks, we will be making this forward-thinking change with the overall identity of the class in mind. This includes avoiding Shaman cards that function as direct and powerful removal. We will continue moving forward with this design philosophy to help reinforce that ideal.
So, all of a sudden Hex doesn't fit the identity of Shaman anymore? Guess we have to be thankful it didn't go to HoF.
Seriously, if they don't release another hard removal (mind you, Devolve is going to rotate out soon) Midrange and, most of all, Control Shaman will be hurt for no reason. This is one of the most uncalled nerfs so far. If their goal was to balance the card in order to fit the class' identity then they should have changed it to: 3 Mana, same effect, 1 Overload as an incentive to play some type of Overload Shaman (Snowfury Giant I'm looking at you).
Seems pointless, but who knows? Maybe, by nerfing Hex, they'll be able to create some crazy cards like Devolve in the next expansions. Also, if you think about it, 4 mana lines up better with Polymorph.

I'm pretty sure many people already thought about that. :P
Hex is now a lot worse than Polymorph because the token is a 0/1 with Taunt. This holds you back immensely as unlike Polymorph the token isn't just something you can ignore. You're essentially stalling yourself.

I've used Hex on my own minion to buy a turn to win a game before. Try doing that with Polymorph.
Has blizzard explained the purpose of this nerf? Played since vanilla and it always seemed to be an understanding that hex was balanced with poly because of the taunt. Maybe they could have left it at 3 mana and gave it 1 attack or something if there data was suggesting it was too strong?

yes because the 0/1 taunt cant be ignored. if you have a 12/12 on board you have to trade because of the taunt.you dont have to trade with 1/1 sheep. the way it saved you it also saves your opponent
For me this weapon will always be a bad one. No matter how much is Hex getting nerfed - the weapon can't compete with it.
Ice Breaker - requires you to play an additional card everytime, when you need to kill something. Always use freeze stuff. So you roughly spend 2 resources for a single minion. If there was a way to generate extra freeze w/o using cards for that (new Hero power), then the weapon would have been a considerable choice. But since it requires you to do so much for so little (Hex not only kills a minion but also silences it), it won't see play any time soon, until we see some proper support.
So no, Ice Breaker is not the reason for this nerf. But some future cards would be.

Lookout, eviscerate!
agree
Totally unnecessary nerf, they even said so in their comments, wtf Blizzard.
Its fangs are in your flesh before its hiss leaves your ears.

Pointless change. Hex is for 8+ / heavily buffed minions. At that point in the game Shams can well afford to pay either 3 or 4.

Maybe its because of Ice Breaker ?
I don't see the necessity, but my question is, why was it 3 mana the first place?
(while, you know, Polymorph is 4 mana and 0/1 taunt is somewhat = vanilla 1/1)
