The card was only a real problem in pirate warrior - the nerf should have been that it can't target face, but still costs 2
Agreed, but that is from the player's perspective. Devs want that their new printed cards take some spots, so they nerf ~5-6 evergreen cards each year now. Control warrior should get something in that spot next xpac, or it will be steamrolled by '1-2-3' drops, as the difference between having and NOT having FWA against agressive openers is day and night.
Right now, CW is unplayable so who cares, but I bet it will get more support the next xpac.
That change seems either really short-sighted or just foolish. Warrior now has essentially no way until turn 3 to deal 3 damage to anything. Any deck with a decent 1/3 start (Priests, Mages, Wild Shamans) now just walk all over warrior because it's gone from a class with possibly the best response to those threats (unless Mirror Images happen) to the class with the worst response. Sure, hunter can't deal 3 early either (outside of Wild). But hunter at least plays aggresively for the board early no matter the archetype. Control warrior is now screwed for answers and any midrange/aggressive warrior would now have to play the 1 drop pirate package to have at least some answer, and even that isn't good enough (all pieces would have to live to attack on the next turn to kill a 1/3, Northshire turn 1 on the play laughs in the face of that, and merrily draws cards to boot). Granted, I think with this change aggro pirates are dead, which is welcome, but utterly killing Warrior's early game to do it doesn't seem like the best decision. So either they didn't think it through and didn't realise that Tempo Mage, Priest and Shaman will now shit on Warriors (especially in wild with Tempo Mages and Totem Shamans), or they did realise it and did it knowingly. Also, if Warrior wasn't bad enough in Arena...well now it definitely is. There's the class that sits on rank 8 in Arena, then there's 150 pounds of shit, and then somewhere below that is Warrior.
Nerf's fine. War axe wasn't just a problem when hitting face; denying any sort of tempo opening from your opponent two turns for [2] mana is ridiculous. We've already got a trillion whirlwind effects and you could in theory axe the whole board down for 3 mana on the same turn you'd normally equip it.

Look, I want to tell you something because you're very dear to me. And I hope you understand that it comes from the bottom of my damaged, damaged heart. You are the finest piece of ass I've ever had and I don't care who knows it. I am so glad that I got to roam those hillsides.
From best weapon in the game to worst 3 mana weapon. All it takes is a little bit Attention of Blizzards nerf Team. Yesterday I was a little bit mad about the nerfs, but with a little bit distance I don't think the nerfs are actually bad. We will adapt. In the end, it will lead to bigger deck differences from rotation to rotation, which sounds good to me.
Terrible uninspired nerf which renders Paladin a strictly better weapon class than Warrior. Why not just make it unupgradable by any means? Control Warrior would still play it and Pirate Warrior would be less viable.
Always thought overpowered weapons was part of Warrior's identity. What's next? 3 mana frost bolt for mage? 2 mana Power word: Shield for Priest? "Minions only" was the way to go IMO.
This is a stupid nerf, just like when they butchered Blade Flurry for no reason. You've now given Warrior the worst early game weapon out of all the major weapon classes. It sucks because their solution to the Jade druid problem was to basically nerf a bunch of decks that were fine.
I'm wondering what people will use in control warrior once Fiery War Axe is, uh, axed. I just started playing quest taunt warrior because I packed Fire Plume's Heart, and I can't think right now what I would have in that slot instead. I guess there is King's Defender, but that's wild and control warrior is even less viable there than in standard. What will standard control warriors do?

Blade Furry was nerfed, because Blizz needed the design space for more good Rogue weapons. Where they are? Comming soon! (TM)
Blizzard should make a special stream lessons or youtube videos in which they explain the the only way hs should be played is with supa dupa 1000 IQ control/combo homebrewed decks and 30 minutes long match is a minimum time period that proves you're not braindead blah blah something etc.
This is still playable, considering how Paladin can run their almost identical weapon without having any Divine Shield synergy. However it will still be a terrible card that you won't be too happy about running, so basically on an appropriate power level for a non-rotating card.
The problem with this nerf is that now Control Warrior has almost no 2-drops, In my opinion Blizzard should do this nerf along with a buff to Slam to make it deal 3 damage, something so CW isn't left dead in the water. The deck was punished enough by the Execute nerf.
Other classes play those weapons with the sole purpose of better protecting their early game minions. War has ever used Fiery War Axe AS their early game (I'm talking about non-Pirate War)... so no, it won't be playable for every warrior ever. Maybe paradoxically PW will still play it since its a 3 dmg weapon that sinergizes with the deck the same as before.
Control Paladin often runs Rallying Blade to deal with early threats like Fledgling or Warleader, not to build a board. The new War Axe certainly won't be playable in every Warrior deck, but it will be a viable option in Control Warrior in lack of better options. Pirate Warrior is probably just dead since not having a turn 2 War Axe seriously screws with their entire curve, not to mention their ability to win the board reliably.
Pirate warrior dead because of fiery war axe?
Seriously some of you don't even have a clue on how certain decks work right?
After playing against it for over 2000 games, I think I do. I can explain why (aside from Fiery War Axe being the second best card in the entire deck). This is assuming that you will still include the card because you don't have any other choice, you need early weapons in Pirate Warrior.
1. It was the only good 2-drop in the deck. Bloodsail Raider is alright, but only if you can follow it up with a Southsea Captain. 2. The nerf delays Dread Corsair by a whole turn, 3. You can no longer play Bloodsail Cultist on curve to buff the Fiery War Axe. 4. You will now have too many cards on 3 mana. Cards like Frothing Berserker become significantly worse when not played on curve, or if you don't have solid board control. 5. It will take more turns to use up all of the weapon charges, meaning you will be holding on to dead weapons in your hand for more turns, both reducing consistency and increasing the chance that your opponent will draw taunts or heals. 6. You could also look at card statistics which show that the winrate of the card drops below 50% if it's played on any other turn other than turn 1 or 2, and that's with it still costing 2 mana.
Pirate Warrior is a fragile deck, at least when it comes to its early game since it's all about snowballing. This nerf will hurt it enough that it will probably not be good enough any more.
Unnecesary and dumb nerf. This card was a core card for warrior, you just cant destroy it that way. Clearly, class cards doesen't mean shit to blizzard.
6 damage for 3 mana over two turns is balanced. I agree with the change. Control warrior will simply have to adapt (doomsayer, or other two drops to keep tempo)

ugh wtf blizzard. If you were only nerfing the card because of the pirates you could of limited the card to only attack minions but now its just a shitty weapon. Warrior is a class built on having good Weapon and now War Axe is complete shit because compared to rallying blade its just terrible. I think there was way better option in terms of nerfs.

I am really pissed off for this lazy change. This card was a problem for pirate warrior yes, but it was important to help keep mid-control warrior in the early game. Without it, it loses that critical early game board control and therefore throwing this class in the dumpster. Thanks blizzard for fucking up this class again, it seems you are still oblivious as ever. How make card bad for aggro? Up cost 1, me smart.

Problem to handle againts agro? agro decks are nerf:
1. Innervate : no more turn 1 flappy bird or turn 2 flappy hydra
2. murloc warleader: no more +1 health for murlocs in one card
3. fiery war axe: nerf pirate warrior deck

Pretty garbage now, but hey, it's a basic card, so it shouldn't be OP.
