I often state that Hearthstone players are not good at rating their own cards. So, I thought it was only fair that I risk the public shaming of placing my review of KTF out there for the public to see.
To start, here is my ranking system:
0: Virtually unplayable. Among the worst cards in the set. 1: Bad. Should rarely see play in constructed. 2: Okay. Should see some play in constructed. An average card or a good card in an average deck. 3: Good. Should see regular play in constructed. A good card in a good deck. 4: Great. Among the best cards in the set.
The bulk of the cards will be rated between 1 and 3, in a "bad, okay, good" type of ranking. Outliers receive 0's and 4's. Ideally, there shouldn't be many of these. Also, these ratings are based on a imagined KFT metagame, they do not take into consideration unknown releases.
SPOILER ALERT: There are a lot of 0's in this set.
So let's get started. I will leave a few brief write-ups where I feel they are appropriate.
Druid
Hadronox: 1 Malfurion the Pestilent: 3 - The card is boring, yes, but the more I thought about it the more I liked it. It's effectively 18 health on 9 mana, or 15 on 7 (5 with innervate). It's a cheap death knight, and I think the versatility of the hero power is fairly important. Ultimate Infestation: 2 - I think this is a very good card, but I don't know where it fits, and I don't think you play more than 1. Fatespinner: 2 - I think it could have niche uses in Token Druid. An average card in a good deck. Spreading Plague: 1 - I mean, you could just play Starfall. Strongshell Scavenger: 0 Druid of the Swarm: 3 - I think this becomes a staple in Token Druid. Webweave: 0 Crypt Lord: 3 - I imagine players will continually switch back and forth between Tar Creeper and this card in Token Druid. Gnash: 0
Deathstalker Rexxar: 1 - Hunter did not receive any tools that make me think it can play control. At best, it's a tech card against heavy control decks. Professor Putricide: 2 - It passes the stats test, and it has a fine effect. Secret Hunter/Midrange may be the only playable Hunter build this format. Abominable Bowman: 1 - Far too slow and unpredictable. The Hyenas from Highmane really goof this up. Toxic Arrow: 0 Corpse Widow: 2 - It passes the stats/effect test. It just has the problem of being a Hunter card. Exploding Bloatbat: 0 Venomstrike Trap: 1 Bearshark: 1 - There are better cards at 3 mana for Hunter, so I think this card is passed over. Stitched Tracker: 1 - I was tempted to give this a 3 for the meme decks (think Barnes). But a meme deck isn't a real deck. Play Dead: 1 - Think Stampede. I'm not sure any of the deathrattles in Hunter are worth 1 mana.
Frost Lich Jaina: 4 - I will preface this by stating that I think weapon destruction will see an increase this meta. I think Jaina replaces Medivh, and gives a non-burn win condition against classes that can heal out of burn range (Priest, Warrior, Paladin). Sindragosa: 1 - I wanted to rate this card slightly higher because it works so well with Jaina, but that's too much mana and is too slow. Glacial Mysteries: 0 - I think this is utterly unplayable. Simulacrum: 2 - I could see this in various forms of Quest Mage, in particular, Giants mage. Ghastly Conjurer: 3 - I think this card pushes Quest Mage over the edge. It does everything you want it to do. A respectable body. Produces a cheap, non-situational spell. And blocks 2 attacks. Doomed Apprentice: 0 Ice Walker: 0 Coldwraith: 2 - It is slightly situational. To the point where I think players will just play a different draw card. But it passes the stats/effect test. Frozen Clone: 2 - Every playable Mage secret makes the others better. And this one is decent on it's own. In some ways, better than Mirror Entity. Breath of Sindragosa: 1
Uther of the Ebon Blade: 2 - I bet a lot of people disagree with this one. I think it is a good card. I think it will see a lot of play. I don't think it is the best card in the deck. I don't think you'll get full value out of Grave Vengance. And I think it's the 2nd worst DK hero power. Bolvar, Fireblood: 3 - I also bet a lot of people disagree with this one. I think this card is probably included in every Paladin deck. It curves so well into Spikeridge Steed, and it is quite sticky. Blackguard: 1 - This card may end up being better. But it appears to be too slow, conditional, and random. Light's Sorrow: 0 - Even in an aggro deck designed to take advantage of this card, Truesilver Champion is better. Arrogant Crusader: 2 - Would Shredder still see play in a midrange deck? I think so. Howling Commander: 1 - I actually don't think this card is bad. It's just worse than Stonehill Defender. Desperate Stand: 1 Chillblade Champion: 1 Dark Conviction: 1 - I was tempted to rate this card higher in an aggro deck, until I thought "Why not just play another minion." Righteous Protector: 3 - I think it's a strong enough aggro card to see play.
Shadowreaper Anduin: 4 - Priest's problem for the longest time is that it didn't have any legitimate endgame. I think this gives it that endgame. Archbishop Benedictus: 0 - The priest meme dream! Honestly, it could see some run as tech in priest mirrors, but I doubt it. Obsidian Statue: 3 - It is on the slow side, but I think it does enough and has enough synergy to see a fair amount of play. Embrace Darkness: 1 - This is another close one. I think it could see niche play as a 1-of answer to specific cards. I just don't know what those are yet. Shadow Essence: 1 - Meme card! Devour Mind: 2 - This is probably playable in highlander priest, which I think has a real shot. Eternal Servitude: 3 - Just a ton of upside here. It's something that will take playtesting in order to see how often that upside manifests, however. Acolyte of Agony: 1 Spirit Lash: 1 - I think this is a fine card. But the competition from Shadow Word: Pain and Potion of Madness matters significantly. Shadow Ascendant: 1
Valeera the Hollow: 2 - The uses exist, I just wonder if they are better or more necessary than others. 9 mana is a lot to pay. Lilian Voss: 2 - She passes the stats test. The effect isn't awful. I merely wonder where she fits. She seems suspect in Miracle, and in Theif-Aggro, I think there are better 4 mana minions (Pirates). I could see this being an average card in a good deck. Spectral Pillager: 0 - I can't think of a single reason you would play this card instead of so many others. Doomerang: 4 - I think it's possible that this is the best card in the set. I think it makes Aggro Rogue a legitimate threat. Runeforge Haunter: 1 - Doomerang is better at preserving durability. Naga Corsair is probably better overall. Even Lillian Voss is probably more useful. Shadowblade: 4 - This is the second part of why I think Aggro Rogue will be a thing. It gives them another weapon for Pirate Synergy. It allows trading without risking health. It's just a good card. Roll the Bones: 1 Bone Baron: 1 Plague Scientist: 1 - There's just too much competition from SI:7 Agent, Sap, Eviscerate, and Vilespine Slayer. Leeching Poison: 0
Moorabi: 0 - It's stats are trash. It's too hard to get value. And I don't believe in Freeze Shaman. Thrall, Deathseer: 1 - I truly wanted to give this card a better rating, but I think you give up too much with the Hero Power. I actually think it's the worst Hero Power of all the DKs. You are giving up 2 mana for the chance to earn an average of like 1/1 stats. (Fake math, but you get my point). And you're losing a hero power that makes mass-evolve attractive. Snowfury Giant: 1 - Maybe you play Earth Elemental and this in the same deck. But it seems unlikely to me. The Jade-Spirit Echo decks seem better suited to this role. Cryostasis: 1 Voodoo Hexxer: 3 - It's just a strong, stand-alone card. Avalanche: 1 - Lightning Storm? It's a fine card, it just finds itself in a class with amazing mass and single removal spells. Ice Breaker: 0 - Hex? Drakkari Defender: 0 - Feral Spirits? Brrloc: 1 - It's a 3 in my heart for the name though. Ice Fishing: 2 - There's good potential here. 2 might be a bit high, but I think it can get there since it's fairly versatile.
Bloodreaver Gul'dan: 2 - This needs some defense. The hero power is amazing. But the discard deck this card is in is not amazing. I think any viability that deck has owed to this card. Maybe creative people can find a way to play control warlock without the discards. This hero power is seriously so dominant. Blood-Queen Lana'thel: 2 - See what I wrote above. Also, why isn't this a demon!?!?! Treachery: 0 - There aren't really apparent uses beyond Doomsayer. However, this is the type of card that becomes better in future sets. So keep an eye out! Gnomeferatu: 0 - River Crocolisk isn't played, so this shouldn't be. Despicable Dreadlord: 3 - Like Voodoo Hexxer, this card is so good stand-alone that it gets a 3, even though it's deck is not good. Unwilling Sacrifice: 0 Defile: 3 - See Despicable Dreadlord. Howlfiend: 1 - I just...I don't even. I guess you can turbo complete your quest. I don't think that's a thing you want to do? But I guess you have the option....Maybe the deck is so bad that turbo completing it is your only option. Drain Soul: 0 - This isn't 100% trash because this is Warlock. Nevermind, yes it is. Sanguine Reveler: 2 - This has Flame Imp and Voidcaller issues. I think both are better cards. But, popping an egg is a decent use.
Rotface: 1 - I just don't think the pay off is worth it. Scourgelord Garrosh: 1 - This is a card without a home. In a vacuum, I'd give it a 2. But I don't know what to do with it. I think Quest is the better control deck. Pirate is the better aggro deck. Midrange is possible, but are you playing this there? Possibly, but I don't know if that deck is better than the first two, and even if this card is great there. Sort of like Thrall, it is pulled in 2 different directions. Bring It On! - Honestly, I'd probably play this in Quest Warrior over Armorsmith today. Dead Man's Hand: 0 - The meme dream reigns supreme. Death Revenant: 0 Mountainfire Armor: 1 Val'kyr Soulclaimer:: 0 Blood Razor: 4 - It is weird that they gave Warrior this card in the same set they gave the Whirlwind Hero Power. This is so much better. Forge of Souls: 3 - I think it has uses across most/all warrior builds. Animated Berserker: 1 - Unfortunately, there is not a 2-mana minion that you can curve into that is worth playing. But the stats are there. FWA exists, and the Coin exists. So it doesn't get a 0.
Only a few neutrals are worth mentioning. Assume most are 0's and 1's...but that's always the case. Some are 2's that fit in Zoo/Aggro and are really obvious.
The Lich King: 3 - As good a neutral legendary as we've had in a while.
Arfus: 1 - The stats are really bad. I guess we will have to see how good 1 DK card is. My guess is that it's not good enough.
Skulking Geist: 2 - This is a bad card. But it may be necessary in 1 or 2 classes. So it might show up just enough.
Bone Drake: 3 - I think this is a sleeper card. The stats are fine. The effect is usually above average. And it gives another strong minion to follow the Secret Agent.
Happy Ghoul: 2 - I mean it's not a Priest card...but it is, right? The weird part will come where people start playing around this. Then it suddenly gets much worse.
Bonemare: 2 - It's probably good enough to see some play, I just don't know where. Shaman? Paladin?
Cobalt Scalebane: 1 - Is sad that Bone Drake exists. It's a good card, but the deck that wants to play it has a better 5 drop. I can't think of where else this guy fits. Aggro probably prefers Hydra.
I realize I was getting a little snarkier towards the end than maybe I should have been. I blame fatigue. A few more things got a 0 than maybe deserved it.
I realize I was getting a little snarkier towards the end than maybe I should have been. I blame fatigue. A few more things got a 0 than maybe deserved it.
Probably. I only checked warlock (my fav class) and kinda disagree on some cards which got the worst rating (drain soul and unwilling sacrifice mostly). But to each their own opinion, and we can't really say anything for sure as long as we don't see the cards in action. It's still nice to see that people are willing to spend some time on sharing their own card ratings.
Drain Soul is definitely one of them. It should probably be rated as a 1.
I don't like Unwilling Sacrifice for a few reasons: Warlock lost a lot of its good tokens and Blast Crystal or Silence is probably better most of the time. That one, I think, I'd keep at a 0 rating.
Thank you for reading and commenting! :) This took more time than I imagined it was going to take.
I think you are a little biased against new archetypes to this set, mainly what I mean by that is you under-rated druid as a whole. Apart from that I see where you are coming from and think your opinions are valid, and as likely to hold true as mine in the cases where we disagree.
The main thing I will note in the area of you have an equal or higher chance to be right is warrior. The whirlwind enrage deck I pretty much agree on, I think it will see play to start and fade out of play in a month, maybe in a future expansion it is good. I mostly disagree on dead man's hand as well as on skulking geist. I bring up the second because of a deck I would put it in with the first, which makes them both better. Imagine you have a bunch of 1 drop spells in a warrior deck, a few survivability and anti aggro things, and a bunch of draw to get to a combo of sorts. The rest of your deck is as follows: 2 Dead Man's, 2 coldlight oracles, Curator, Brawl, slam, excecute. You basically try to thin deck with skulking geist, draw to the hand you want, and start dead man's handing and clearing board, and milling your opponent. you get them to fatigue, and hopefully win. your hand can include some extra draw and armor stuff other than those core cards but thos are the things you need to actually get the deck to work, because those are the big ways you can deal with threats, as well as push toward win condition. I think that this deck will either be the most viable mill deck ever in hearthstone rising to tier 2 or 3, or it will suck horribly. That deck is of course the meme dream, so I guess your rating does not matter, because your description called it.
Rollback Post to RevisionRollBack
Just fill your deck with one drops, that is creative deck design, right?
Now that the set is at its end. Let's see how I did!
In Druid, I massively underrated Spreading Plague and didn't give UI enough credit. Nothing else was too far off. In Hunter, I was mostly correct. Slightly underrated Rexxar and overrated Putricide. In Mage, I slightly overrated Jaina and Ghastly Conjurer. Greatly overrated Frozen Clone. In Paladin, I greatly overrated Bolvar, but was pretty close on most of the others. Interestingly, I was one of the few right about Uther. In Priest, I massively underrated Shadow Essence, but was about right on everything else. In Rogue, I massively overrated Doomerang. Slightly overrated Valeera and Shadowblade. Not too far off on the rest. In Shaman, I massively overrated Voodoo Hexxer, and slightly undrrerated Thrall, overrated Ice Fishing. In Warlock, Gul'Dan was underrated and so was Drain Soul. The rest are about right. In Warrior, I slightly underrated Garrosh, and very underrated Dead Man's Hand. Forge of Souls was massively overrated. In neutrals, I massively overrated Bone Drake. Massively underrated Bonemare and Scalebane

Just fill your deck with one drops, that is creative deck design, right?
Out of curiosity, which Druid cards do you think I under-rated?
Of all the classes, I think Druid was one of my more accurate.
Massively underrated Bonemare and Scalebane
right on bro
Can't tell if sarcasm. If not, thanks! If so, :(
I am going to review KnC similarly, so I thought it'd be helpful to see how far off I was and try to learn from it.
Ooops, that was the wrong review of the three. My bad, sorry.
