I understand Magma Rager is especially weak against one class (druid and rogue do take retaliation damage) where it only serve to drop enemy tempo by forcing a ping, but it still hits hard and curves out and enables Tol'vir Stoneshaper and other elemental synergy cards.
We haven't been introduced to many 3 drop elementals besides Tar Creeper, the power is in the curve after all even if the card itself is weak.
I myself have had lots of fun with Ice Rager, and even Dust Devil, though dust devil seems more of a tunnel trogg/unbound activator.
I've used Magma too, but it's more of a decoy than anything else.

Through my use of Magma Rager I've found it does have use in denying mid-range decks their 3/4 drop. and forcing a ping if they're a mage.
Though Ice Rager being ping-proof does perform the same role a lot better.
