Counterspell, for free in the first turn, if pop-ups for a coin the opponent lose the coin and the tempo for playing a turn 2 minion in your first turn.
wow, just wow, this secret into valet, into kirin tor into ethereal arcanist, into avian, and mayeb you then just have some nice late game like old secret paladin.

Just fill your deck with one drops, that is creative deck design, right?
As no mage secrets are really good in the early turns like Avenge and Bear Trap are, I expect a new one to come out. Also anotheer value synergy card like:
3 mana 2-2, battlecry: if you control a secret, gain +3 +3.
That's actually a card advantage loss for you and not much else.
Blocking plays using The Coin for your opponent when it's at its most valuable for many decks is pretty significant.
You guys have to remember we are taking turns 1-2 when you only have 1-2 mana to do anything, not later turns where you can maybe throw away the coin without much loss.
Why would this card see any play when Kirin Tor does not?
boy are you short sighted.
this card adds consistency to being able to cheat out secrets. you could actually play a, wait for it.... SECRET BASED DECK in the future. not only that but if you are pavel or something, just imagine going turn 1 this guy turn 2 the guy that does 3 damage if you control a secret... grats on winning early game board.
It's also highly likely there will be a new mage secret in this set so depending on how useful that is it may increase the value of this card considerably.
Not only that but old secrets become more playable if they are free... Turn 1 play this into a counterspell (if you are going first) and you counter their coin play... just huge really. and that's just one example.
Don't you guys think this card will help Kirin Tor get play .. There can be more secrets if you rely on card draw ( something mages don't have a problem with ) you might use Kirin Tor and Kabal Lackey together.
I would agree that this synergizes. Any time you have redundant effects like this it is a good idea to look at "new" or "old" archetypes to see if something different is possible. Just like with pint-sized potion it will be a good idea to relook at the priest "confuse" archetype due to the cheap kill possibilities, combined with aggro attacks... Not saying it will work, but since it's not in the current meta all the new possible decks need to be tested.
Where exactly does this excel? You can turn 1 Mana Wyrm, Coin, This dude, counterspell and have good board position, but basically from that point on the game you are just topdecking and hoping that you draw the card you need when you need it to push damage though. It seems really fragile.
.... If it were to excel you would need a deck where playing 2 cards on turn 1 wasn't a big deal... so a deck that plays secrets, but also has a lot of card draw... Maybe some kind of combo deck? Not sure... It's not an existing deck though.

I know Mage already has a prominent combo deck - Freeze mage, but I don't see how that makes freeze mage better. I think for this to be actually good there needs to be some kind of combo synergy - this into 2/3 does 3 damage... But I'm not sure that's enough...That's like breaking even because you spent 3 cards for 3 removal options ( a 2/1, a 2/3 and a 3 damage)
Those are fair points, but for me what they lack in minions they easily make up for in spellborne board suppression. This is why tempo mage is a thing. Kill off minions with efficient spells, play sub-statted minions for chip damage, finish with burn or board presence. Nowhere in any of that does it require mages to have premium statted minions when their spell based arsenal is already very strong. Imho, strong minions on top of it would give it a power level akin to what we're seeing in shaman now, due to the flexibility and strength of their spells. It'd be different if it was something like priest, where their spells like the shadow words are crazily efficient at the cost of being crazily specific.
Even in a matchup against deal-1 classes the mage who plays it still gains something for playing it early, since they invest their turn 2 hero powering it down, giving initiative back to the mage for board or even card advantage against cheap tempo cards like Mortal Coil or Backstab.
Mage Legendary will create a custom secret.

t1= this + secret
t2= Medivh's Valet(that include a Darkbomb)
such tempo.
need take time to make new pic and signature using the new cards.

lol wtf this is crazy... Medivh's Valet turn 2 with the secret is just fucking crazy
Oh yeah. Secret Mage here I come. I've been waiting for something like this. I think that the support is finally there.

And secret mage is gonna take off just like secret huntard has now.
I can already see the Mana Wyrm - Coin - Lackey - Counterspell cancer.
I like the design on this. Most maghe secrets are bad turn 1/2 to play this might actually encourage other secrets like spellbender for example.

Let's hold off and see what the new secret is.
If it's something like "Polymorph the next minion your opponent plays" then this card will see play everywhere.
Two words- Reno Mage
I don't see any Mage secret I'd like to play on Turn 1, yet.
Plus this card empties your hand and you are force to play too many 3-mana cards to make it work.
Exciting if Mage gets new secrets.
