Avenge, Shielded Minibot, Muster for Battle, Loatheb, Sludge Belcher and Dr Boom were a lot to lose. Yes Avenge was good, but they lost a lot more than that.
I'm actually playing Secret Paladin in Standard, but the reason it got weaker is the loss of all the Paladins good early game (Muster for battle, Haunted Creeper and Minibot)
The "secret" behind Secret Paladin (other than all the secrets) was their perfect curve:
Secretkeeper - Secret Pally announcer. The only relevant 1-drop that they can play. If they have a few secrets in their hand, they can buff it up to a 2/3 or a 3/4 on turn 2, but most likely they would just play...
Shielded Minibot / Knife Juggler - These can also come on Turn 1 with the coin. Minibot is sticky, and knife juggler sets up Turn 3...
Muster for Battle - As Kripp would say "It's rated higher than Dr Boom!"
Piloted Shredder - Sticky minion. Demands immediate removal, or it trades up with your 5 drop.
Turns 1-5 were designed to be as difficult to deal with as possible, and as soon as MC dropped, the Paladin basically becomes invincible for the rest of the game.
So, as you can see, pretty much all of the turn 1-5 minions rotated out of standard. Pally's early game is weak now, and has a much harder time contesting the board without Minibot/Shredder/Belcher. So now Paladin rarely goes into Turn 6 with board control, which really hurts the Challenger turn. Avenge certainly was a powerful secret, but even if it was still in standard, Secret Pally would have a hard time keeping up.
The so called "Dr 6" is all but irrelevant now. Could it have been that Avenge was the powerhouse all along?
Anger is the punishment we give ourselves for someone else's mistake.

How others player said, Mysterious Challenger was powerful because the deck had a perfect curve with OP cards every turn, and it no longer has.
