It was a card that I could not see being used effectively in a deck, but have seen it create space for warrior. Notably for the early 1 drop which Warrior struggles with, and adding durability and damage to weapons, which warrior is more willing to wield than others due to armor capability.
Since there is damage value in weapons, it shines best with warrior who can amass armor.
Killing minions with Weapons is cost value. Take a 4 cost minion vs 4 cost weapon, each costs 1 slot in a deck, meanwhile, the weapon has potential to eliminate two 4 cost minions.
Upgrade implies a potential based on the weapon. 1 mana to eliminate a 5 drop or higher.
Why do you feel it is strong now? I have one but was wondering where you would put this in a Warrior deck. A control Warrior perhaps?
Oh, you don't want advice from me lol You'd want to ask someone in legend or something. But I noticed how the weapon is good for turn 1, and deals with early drops, and upgrade can be upgraded with weapon based cards. Just as priest has lightwarden, and mage has mana wyrm, upgrade is like that, but weapon version. I know little about hearthstone, but when I play, I feel as there is a tempo or a momentum, people try to get it. I try to disrupt that momentum before they get out of control. I'm not sure how it works well in a deck, or against a deck. But I felt like having a 1/3 weapon at turn 1 is something I can work with. You get to kill a minion that has 1 hp, 3 times, for 1 mana. That's value. :D
Also, I tend to have lots of low drops for warrior, and it seems I'm not the only one. So even if you don't get the upgrade at turn one, there are other low drops that you might draw which may help.
I'm a slow thinker, and I take time to understand things clearly, but what I understand a bit is how having draws, as they say 'thin out' your deck. So you can hasten the cards that you want to be in your hand. Usually that involves low drops with draws and/or something that capitalizes on value draws, like Battle rage or Bouncing blade plus acolyte of pain.
^ I am just assuming worse case scenario where you don't have weapons and need to play the spell naked. You won't guarantee to be able to draw Death's Bite or Fiery War Axe in order to Upgrade! it just because you put it in your deck, plus if you put a weapon and a spell ( Shield Slam for example),you can hit 2 targets in one turn, if you use Upgrade! on your weapon, you can only hit one enemy per turn.
Upgrade! is like a worse Shield Slam or another warrior damage spell ,that is even more conditional than Shield Slam or Execute, and your hero needs to take damage, might as well just put a Gorehowl in your deck for CW. Maybe works for Face Warrior for face damage though.
Every few months I try to make a weapon-heavy face Warrior, and I find that 1 copy of Upgrade! is pretty good. Right now it's got a home in my fun Axe Flingaroony aggro deck.

Upgrade! is nothing like Shield Slam. Doubly so when you consider that you don't take damage from the minion you target with Shield Slam AND that Shield Slam has to target a minion. But if you're using Upgrade for the 1/3 weapon, you're doing it wrong... or desperate since the +1/+1 on your weapon was always the value aspect of the card, since it offers you an additional attack with the weapon at a higher damage. While Death's Bite wasn't around when the card was released, it's pretty clear that it was intended for something like that where you need to get an extra attack to prevent it breaking, or one extra damage with your weapon to kill a minion to trade efficiently. But as I said, that effect is very situational and other cards were more consistent and offered more flexibility for it to see significant play.
@twiz I have already said worse case scenario in my post and concerning damage to your opponent's face too. You have been arguing with the wrong guy, I am saying Upgrade! sucks unless maybe for face warrior.

Only potentially useful in face warrior, one dmg is too low, actually even two dmg is too low for a weapon.
I use upgrade in this deck and it's one of the key cards lol http://www.hearthpwn.com/decks/429629-brann-gorehowl-otk-great-for-standard
