Long story short, I used to play a lot of HS back in 2015/2016, from TGT to Old Gods (playing mostly Reno Handlock), but ended up quiting the game after they announced that, after rotation, wild packs/adventures would no longer be available for purchase and you had to get the cards through dust (I guess they changed that???). Needless to say, I missed lots of things, but the one constant that would always pop in my head whenever I thought about returning to the game was how much I hated Priest and how I would never even consider touching the class in case I returned to the game (I was still salty about Lightbomb, can you believe it?).
Cut to 2020, right after Outland launches, this is when I came back, still a Warlock main. Now that I have some money of my own I managed to catch up with the wild meta and craft at least one deck for each class EXCEPT for Priest, and I think that it's time to progress past this mentality, after all, it's one more way for me to enjoy the game. Looking back to archetypes from metas that I've never had the chance to experience I came to realize that Dragons are somewhat part of the class' set of themes, and seeing how many good Dragon minions we have I thought it might as well be a good idea to give a chance to this type of deck.
So I came before you, fellow forum users and HS players, to ask for Priest decks that don't rely on unfair mana cheating (Big Priest) or reactive hyper-controlling tools (Reno Priest), and I thought that the more value-oriented Dragon Priest could be the answer. Are you guys able to help me? It doesn't need to be something super competitive (I play Burgle Rogue regularly), just a somewhat fun deck that can be somewhat proactive.
As someone who mainly plays Priest (they're my only Golden Class after 5 years lol), I can say with confidence that they are the most polarising class - even more than Demon Hunter. Most Priest decks these days are either OTK Combos (Res Mind Blast/Velen, Topsy-Turvy/Test Subject, Divine Spirit/Inner Fire, Raza Priest) or Big/Rez Priest decks. Almost all other deck themes fall into these categories in someway. For example;
- Dragon's are often played in Divine Spirit/Inner Fire due to their high health and tempo nature. It means you often have a minion on board you can OTK with and it's a nice finisher.
- Resurrect/Big Priest decks sometimes include N'Zoth and favour Deathrattles over typical big minions.
However there are some off-meta and fun combos you can attempt to pull off. Here are a few:
- Miracle Priest: Using Radiant Elementals and Lyra, you can create an insane amount of value and high apm turns. They typically need a finisher like DS/IF, however you can just go pure value if you want or try end the game with Arcane Giant/Grave Horror.
- Spiteful Summoner: A mostly minion and tempo oriented deck that uses 2/3 high cost spells (like Mind Control or Mass Resurrection) to summon high cost minions as early as turn 6 since Spiteful's nerf revert. Can make heavy use of Dragon's for their tempo nature.
- Galakrond Value: Priest's unique Galakrond is incredible for value. Each push gives you a random Priest minion and it serves as removal if necessary. The only issue with it is you can slap it in a deck with 29 removal spells and use it almost entirely as your value engine meaning it can feel a bit samey. There are other builds though that work incredibly well like with Princess Talanji pulling out all your generated minions.
- Awaken the Makers: The amount of meme decks with this deck is incredible. Besides the obvious Deathrattle decks with N'Zoth as a finisher, Amara can be Seanced for multiple 40 Health heals. You can also run Hakkar and Wyrmrest Purifier to transform your Corrupted Bloods into random Class Cards or fill your deck with Deathrattle Tech Cards (like Weasel Tunneler and Bad Luck Albatross) to complete the quest while messing your opponent's deck up. You can also run Archbishop Benedictus to copy your opponent's deck and win by Fatigue or refresh Shadowreaper Anduin's Hero Power with all the randomly generated cards.
Hopefully these give you some ideas for cool off-meta Priest decks!
Honestly no one should care about what anyone thinks in regards to playing a certain class or whatever.. silly title imo. If you're having fun with the game, that's the point
You could Try Odd priest, I have a friend who has climbed to legend with it the last two seasons. This deck can also support a dragon package through Draconic Studies, Cleric of Scales, Drakonid Operative. The new Malygos that refills your hand with spells could also potentially fit in the upcoming core set. This deck farms Aggro, farms big priest, does well against Renolock, and has game against combo through Mindrender Illucia. It's by no means a tier one deck, but it does well across the board in matchups and is legend viable. There are a lot of potential changes you could make for the deck, this version is running Lyra the Sunshard and Dragon Soul thanks to Palm Reading.
Here's the deck string for my dragon version I was testing, which is a lot less refined since I have played significantly less games with it, but it might help give you a starting perspective for you to try going with dragons. My advice, wait until the rotation and then try and create some interesting decks in standard. It's (imo) the best time to play new decks and have fun with them. All the current standard priest decks are rotating and won't be viable so it'll be the best time to experiment with new ideas and have fun with it. That's what I intend to do.
Honestly no one should care about what anyone thinks in regards to playing a certain class or whatever.. silly title imo. If you're having fun with the game, that's the point
The op clearly implies that he hates some of priest archetype, so he was asking for some other priest archetype that doesn't feels the same with archetype he hates.
Also, out topic about 'should not care'. If you not doing something because you remember that it doesn't feels good when others do the same thing to you, then it was categorized as empathy. And it was an unique mammals trait. It was pretty normal. So the one who doesn't care is actually the anomaly here...
But of course, if you never felt salty, unfair or hate over any of priest archetype, and you dont feel anything when play that priest archetype yourself, that's fine. Like me, I never feel salty over any game when I screwed by my opponent because this just a game. All for rhe laugh. And I feel free to play anything as long as the game allow it.
To the op, you can try clown priest, get so much value once you successfully corrupted the clown and use raise dead.
There is absolutely nothing wrong with praying priest you aren’t forced to play in a toxic way if you don’t want to as well. Like personally I will never play res priest or raza on because I think they are brainless and skillless
Who gives a shite, play what you enjoy and enjoy what you play. thats the whole point of games.
Another example of people who can't comprehend what he reads, or just doesn't read at all. ^
He clearly implies that he doesn't enjoy (most popular) priest archetype, and just trying to find and build one priest deck because its its only class he doesn't have now. So he was asking for another priest archetype. Duh.
just dont play big priest and youre good. im not sure how good priest might be overall because of secret mage, though if you draw well and play around counterspell you are probably fine most of the time.
i used to play a lot of highlander priest that was minion based. it was a lot of fun, though not necessarily very good. spiteful priest was a blast too, but i think the meta might be too fast for it, though if you care more about fun than winning , by all means go for it. if the game looks like a bust by turn 5, just concede and move on to the next.
I just wanna say screw ppl who says 'just don't play big priest'. Cuz someone hates any deck am i forbidden to play it? Man, play whatever deck you want, as long as you can have fun of it, i've hope you'll find something for you, without hatin yourself (which is sick for me :p)
The only 2 decks I played for a long time were my wild quest/n'zoth/reno priest, and a tesspionage rogue deck, both purely for fun. Both are heavy control decks, and I eventually got tired of auto losing to combo/otk decks. I noticed I had most of the cards to make a mill rogue, which is another of the most hated decks in the game, because who likes having half their deck burned? Turns out, it's a lot of fun being on the other side of that matchup. It's my most played deck the last few months. The moral of the story is why give a shit what other people think of the decks you like? It's a video game, just play whatever makes you happy.
For Wild Priest check WowHobbs on YouTube and Twitch. He got somewhat control Priest deck, usually called "Same Deck as Always". Deck has not strictly defined wincondition and is IMO very fun to play, if you are not facing some garbage decks like Secret Magesh, Token Drood or other garbage.

Judging by the cards revealed so far, with the new expansion priest might be (again) more board oriented class. I sure hope so, because I haven't played priest for a long time, back since old dragon priest was meta, and that was one of my favorite decks ever.
Let's just hope that developers will continue in this direction and that we will have priest as an honest class once again.

Its okay to play anything you want as long as you enjoy it, thats the point of the game after all. Dont care about salty crybabies, enjoy the game :)
