I am wondering to what extent a player's record in the arena is taken into account when doing arena matchmaking. For example, in an arena series a player might win her first six matches in a row with a single deck.
Will this win streak be taken into account and will matchmaking attempt to pair this player with other arena decks with similar success?
Or is arena matchmaking performed using a player's global rank across all play modes?
The Arena will match you with players with a similar amount of wins, so far what we know is that if you are 6-0 you will be matched with an opponent that is 6-0. What we assume is that if there are no 6-0 opponents they will search for 6-1 or 6-2 opponents at least. Even more assumption is that if there is no 6-win opponents available, it may go to 7 or 5 win opponents.
Also Each arena deck gets it's own matchmatching, so if you went 9-0 your first 3 arenas, your fourth arena when you start, you still go against a 0-0 player.
I hope I cleared that up for you. Although the system may change slightly, that is the general understanding of it right now.
FYI, you can be matched with the same person you just won/lost against. Probably won't happen often come release but right now with limited number of beta users it has happened to me several times. Only way to try and avoid is to hope they instant queue and you hold off for a minute or two to allow them to get a different opponent.
Yeah, I expect right now that there aren't enough testers for the system to works as it's supposed to. Even just in regular play mode I was playing a few people more than once. I even played one guy 3 times in a row. Especially for the rarefied air of the upper brackets of the Arena, matching exact records wont be possible at this point.
Right now there's not enough people playing in beta to have a legitimate MMR system in place but at release we should have a proper MMR system working.
I ask because just yesterday I played a game, on my 5th win against an opponent who pretty clearly had no idea what he was doing. I'd guess a completely new TCG player, so I'd be incredibly surprised if he had any wins with the deck he was using.
simple question as stated in the title: does the arena have a hidden mmr?
i mean to be quite honest i don't think that i'm the best arena player with 3,8 wins in average (only paladin, hunter and shaman "shine" with 4,5 - 4,8 wins) but i just started a new account on the NA server and my watching is... what should i say? on my obversation i get matched with ppl like
and well... pro stuff like this... i never had so simple first arena matches on eu so... is there actually a hidden mmr? (since the account is new on NA i guess i get matched with noobs instead of other 0-0 decks). does somebody have some insight? :)
Notes: merged with old, but still relevant, thread
well yeah... that was the point why i had this mmr feeling. i mean the first arena was a really really bad draft and i still got above my average win rate with paladin.
in the next two runs there was the wombo echo-play i mentioned above (pretty bad cards drafted and then copy them?) or players like "me go face me no need to trade" SMOrc-Rogues or someone who played his deathlord just to silence it and THEN buff it in his turn before it could do anything
the point is i'm not talking about "oh fk i played directly into consecration"... more something like "pick this and that and then go face. Works against easy AI"
Many arena players believe that your first run on a new account (or perhaps first few runs), get some kind of buff; ie matched against worst players. Without actually studying it, it's impossible to know if this is real, or if it's just the few people who get lucky who wonder and go look and talk about it.
I'm an NA player, I don't remember how my first run on EU was, but I tried Asia recently and got two 12 wins in a row(!). I average 6 wins/run, have only gotten 6 or 7 12s before, so it's just hard to believe that there isn't some kind of buff. I hate that Blizzard makes me doubt whether this was actually an accomplishment. They were both good decks (68 & 69 tier score on Heartharena), but more like 9-win decks than 12.
I just helped my son make an account and play through the tutorials and his first arena -- his first few arena opponents were TERRIBLE like I've never seen. His first opponent played Soul of the Forest on Turn 4 - on an empty board.

Once there's more people in it should work out well

I believe its based on the amount of wins that your deck has. I think it trys to match in a +1/-1 area so its a fair match.
Is this actually already implemented and working?

hey guys!

What's an mmr?
According to Zeriyah on twitter, the ONLY thing that goes into matching you is your record.

For people too lazy to click the link
Q: "is matchmaking based solely on wins/losses in current arena or is there an mmr?"
A: "Arena matches you against someone with as close of a win/loss record as you have."
Q: "so similar win loss ratio in the current arena is the only factor in arena matchmaking no other hidden factors"
A: "Nope. If I'm 5-2, I should be matched against someone as close to that as possible."
Have a great deck that's really, really cheap? Help the new players out
mh well... seems that i got lucky then on my first arenas on NA... thanks guys
