What are some ridiculous things you've run into in arena?
I'm pretty salty at the moment.. After going 6-1, I run into a mage that frost bolt ice lance ice lances me on turn 6, then finishes me with fireball + ping on turn 7 using all his cards
Next game, a paladin plays triple aldors back to back into yeti and silverhand knight.. of course there are way worse things that have happened to me but dang..
wow wtf happened frkn55 lol.. that looks like a constructed game for real.
funny about the deathlord ones.. I killed one and had my hogger came out which got infinite value the whole game against a paladin with true silver but no consecrate :P
i remember once I got onyxia + innervate + power of the wild against me.. another is when I played deathwing and a shaman rolls taunt totems in a row which absorb 24 freakin dmg while I die to his 2 dmg minions
lol @ the secrets mage.. I actually made one of those in the first month i played arena a long time ago.. it was actually insane how well those can synergize.. I had all the pieces including kirin tor, mana worms, secret keepers and the arcanist..
but I think one of the craziest openers I had with mage was mana wyrm turn 1, turn 2 mana wyrm -> coin -> sorc apprentice -> mirror images and turn 3 top deck frost bolt.. that was also many months ago but the guy just conceded by turn 3
I just revisited this thread b/c I'm salty about losing against a mage at 9-2 score.. it is so dumb.. all my minions are just frozen forever and flamestriked.. I even play around flamestrike with 5 hp minions on turn 8 including a stealth 7/5 ravenholdt but guess what.. after turn 7 flamestrike, he just flamestrikes and arcane missiles me on turn 8.. I'm near lethal but then he pulls out frost elementals, frost bolts, and ice lances every !@#$ing turn.. so dumb sometimes!!
haha sounds like a smart play by that guy but yes, the frost elementals are amazing finishers.. mages have just too many ways to board control and stall turns on top of their aoe.. cone of cold, frost bolt, ice lance, water elemental, frost elemental, blizzard.. if a mage is able to get one of these cards per turn, you are basically frozen all game and being hit to death, and you aren't able to play any cards simply b/c you are playing against a mage that threatens flamestrike whether he has it or not..
a lot of times, your choices involve playing around flamestrike and losing, or playing into it just for a chance he doesn't have it to be able to come back..
edit: on another note opposite of bad beats, i feel like i'm playing amazing in my current run @ 6-0 rogue.. opponent had silverhand knight 4/4 + 2/2 on board while my board was 4/4 azure drake and 3/5 kodo.. it sucked, but i sacked my azure drake (had some spells in hand that coulda used it for sure) to play around consecrate and traded kodo for the 2/2 to play a venture co and kobold..
he ended up playing a 3/3 and ran a 3/1 charger into the venture co (I was so confused as he coulda just taken out the 3/3 kodo) so he could double consecrate me the next turn. He almost came back with a guardian of kings and top deck mind control tech the only turn I played 4 minions on board lmao.. I figured he was top decking so the one turn I play 4 minions, this happens ! I just stayed with 3 minions on board the rest of the game but a sprint led me to lethal the next turn..
just beat a pally that had 2 humilities, equality, argent protector, aldor, 3 true silvers, consecrate, guardian of kings, spectral knight, tirion, holy light, golems.. wat in the !@#$.. game 1 too lol
This literally just happened to me against a Paladin. I killed a Deathlord which put my Venture Co. Mercenary in play (didn't help that I drew Ragnaros really early in the game). He Peacekeeper'd it on his turn and it was over.
I don't think I remember any specific moments but, I've had an outrageous amount of arena runs where I had seemingly amazing decks that got crushed by even superior decks with amazing draws perfect top decks, as I've had marginal decks which accomplished me 9~10 wins.
faced rag 3 times in 1 arena run that ended 8-3.. faced rag twice in a row and sylvanas the game before.. bring opponent to 1 hp for a next turn ping win after he 50/50s my stormwind champ with rag and he top decks a fireball for exact lethal.. Another game, a hunter top decks like 5 cards in a row, exactly what he needs for every turn, the final being a top deck (he had no cards) hunters mark that gets through my taunt to get lethal.. I'm pretty damn disgusted right now lol
turn 2: mana wyrm + mana wyrm + coin -> leper gnome
turn 3: undertaker + loot hoarder
turn 4: loot hoarder and some other crap
How do people even draft this stuff.. you can't even do this in constructed
Next game, another mage who plays turn 1 mana wyrm + coin -> mirror images against my turn 1 leper gnome.. turn 2 he had a loot hoarder that I had to ping in turn 2 and had only an acolyte in turn 3. He plays dancing swords on turn 3
Turn 4, he fireballs my face while I break through mirror images with dark iron dwarf + acolyte
Turn 5, he fireballs my face again and I'm pretty disgusted at this point.. Luckily, I have removal and I end up winning with flamestrike when I'm going down to 10 hp fearing pyroblast (why the !@#$ would he fireball my face every turn if not)..
Arena is so !@#$ing dumb, I think I'm done today lol.. Even though I'm averaging 8+ wins in my last 35 arena runs, it is hard not to be salty against this ridiculous shit and losses from single outers..
The game before the first mage, a hunter top draws a !@#$ing ironbeak owl with no cards off a webspinner to pass through my 1/3 undead ghoul which would I counted on to kill about 6 of his minions on his full board of 1 hp creatures!
1) rogue played leeroy+shadowstep+leeroy+shadowstep+leeroy+shadowstep+leeroy > ende :D
2) warrior played on T3 warsong commander and T4 wargen+2x inner rage (while havin equiped fiery waraxe) > it was gg for me :D
3) EVERY SINGLE TIME i pick elven archer (cause other 2 were even worse) and it is my ONLY 1 drop in deck, deathlord EVERY SINGLE TIME summons elven archer :D
4) tried mindgames with priest couple times > ALWAYS get elven archer or argent squire from enemy deck :D
When all 4 minions are equally crap, you don't need to worry about MCT so much. When one of your minions is a taunt or a big guy, you should stick to 3 minions. Also, when the opponent has already played 1 MCT, you typically expect him not to have picked a second copy.
Nevertheless, one of my bad beats memories is when an opponent was running that 2nd MC tech, and stole my fresh Sea Giant with it. But that's extremely rare.
I agree, I typically try to stay at three and then flood the board on the turn threatening lethal. most times, I don't care when all minions are weak like you said
I might have posted this already here but my most recent memory of a strong MCT bad beat was on my 5 minion board pushing for the kill.. I had 3 weak creatures, an 8/8 frostwolf, and a 8/8 ironbark.. Anything but the ironbark would have easily gave me the win but I ended up having to run my warlord into my ironbark.. it was horrible lol
This is the reason why I don't value Flamestrike very highly for Mage. Assuming that the opponent plays around it anyways, it's more useful to have picked other cards instead. Then, they continue playing around a Flamestrike that was never in my hand (or deck) to begin with. Goves me much more additional board development and topdeck time, playing control style Mage.
That's a good thought and I had that feeling too when not being able to draft flamestrike, but SO many people don't play around the card at all recently..
I'm not sure if this is just a recent thing (I'm playing mage more often for gold and to build card collections on other servers) but the amount of times I thought to myself "Wow.. I can't believe he played that, what if I had flamestrike, wtf?" was significantly high.. If I only have one copy, I sometimes keep it in my opening hand (If I already have a good 2 drop pre-mulligan and probably depending on the class of the opponent) just because I realized that there are just too many people not playing around it.. You gotta admit though, sometimes, you just can't play around if it you don't draw your big minions or if you are losing board control for any number of reasons..
Decent Arena players estimate their minions on Flamestrike-survivability (Venture Co Merc, Boulderfist Ogre, War Golem). Dennis-minded players play a turn 5 Silver Hand Knight into turn 6 Razorfen Hunter + Imp Master. Some call this strategy "calling a bluff" (assuming that the player knows he can not play around Flamestrike with the deck or the current hand and has to rely on it not being there) or "making a good play due to inherent stupidity" (when the player is not aware that Flamestrike exists in this universe). It's difficult to distinguish these two from each other.
lol, that is so true.. Sometimes, I wonder if it was the way I played that signaled that I didn't have the card.
Sometimes, it is fun to bluff that you don't have it though which can be a devastating play which I've seen many streamers fall into as well.. On an arena run yesterday on turn 8, I frost nova'ed an enemy's board with 2 minions (4/4 and 4/5) and I pinged the 4/4 into a 4/3 knowing that I can FS and ping the 4/5 and finish off a bigger minion with some small 3 dmg minions on my side.. He flooded the board and it wasn't pretty..
i remmembered another one: i was vs priest and had bad hand and he had T1/T2/T3 minions out so he hit me all the way then T4 2x mindblast T5 2x mindblast > GG :D i was like, da fuq ?:D iv experienced 1-2 and even that is so rare, but 4 in a row ... well :D

lol wow..
welp, at my 9-1 run in europe as rogue, ran into a mage that just fireballs my minions, turn 6 blizzard, flame strike, fire ball face and the classic pyroblast finisher.. fun game for sure... next game i'm paired against the same !@#$ing mage who just plays water elementals and goes for face.
I believe I played 9 mages in this run and 1 hunter.. so crazy.. mediocre rogue deck but oh well..
I saw the pyroblast coming and I had to push the board b/c he pinged my face after the blizzard. I had a 4/6 spectral knight that got caught in the blizzard and I had to push 2 more minions on the board to create lethal for myself.. It wouldn't have mattered if I didn't go all in anyway I guess since he had the fireball into pyro that I was trying to dodge anyway..

This is the main reason why I take a break immediately after an arena loss, especially when I am already at high-win levels. The likelihood of playing against the same opponent you just lost to is very high due to matchmaking.
yea, that was probably a good idea.. at least I knew what I was up against when we started the game but things just fell in his favor again and water elementals just own rogue in every way.
The one secret he played the first game was vaporize. Early game 2, we had some haunted creeper battles and I got a good kobold blade flurry kill on two 1/1s, a raging worgen, a mana wyrm, and a mad scientist. The scientist spawns mirror entity and of course I check for vaporize with my 1/1 before I realized I was !@#$ed.. At this point, I'm just stuck with 4+ mana minions that I don't want to give him but doesn't really matter as he just went double water elemental mirror images on me and it was completely over.. 6 HP 4 drop with freeze is too much for a rogue to remove even with spell power. We didn't even get to the blizzard flamestrike stage that time as the senjin I gave him was immediately fire balled :(
just had a game when for once i wasnt on the receiving end of things :)
i played T3 coin + Twilight drake, T4 Twilight Drake (had 2 in my hand), T5 Duplicate > he kills both my dragons, i play T6 Dragon, T7 Dragon + 2nd duplicate > he kills my 2 dragons with last thing he had, i play T8 2x Twilight Dragon :DDDD man that guy must have been so angry :D i felt so bad for him :D
The story was that I played worgen infiltrator turn 1 and he played a secret. Tested for explosive/freezing was negative. Played voodoo doctor for snipe and negative. He plays deathlord so I summoned misha and don't attack. He multi shots both my 2/1s. I play buzzard + webspinner looking for unleash and I get it :D
Next turn, he kills my misha and plays 3 minions on board total. I had about 6 cards and took half my turn to try not to overdraw but started the combo as the rope was burning. You can see there's no rope left when half the attacks are already in Q lol.. Don't even know what card I burned.. The deck was pretty insane with black knight and went 9-3 but that card hasn't been played once throughout the whole run :(
I had maybe 7 cards left by turn 9 hehe.. Not bad deck but got wrecked by insane paladins in close games
just beat a rogue vs rogue who had coin, 3 deadly poisons, sap, eviscerate, assassinate, and minions in the first 7-8 cards omg.. Wrecked my whole early game, sapped my violet teacher turn 4, and assassinated my turn 5, and kept going face bringing me to 13 hp by turn 6.. After he has no cards, he top decks sprint and reloads his whole hand (sigh).. I flood the board with smaller minions I have and he plays azure drake fan of knives to clear me lol.. I still won the game with a boulderfist ogre but that was a crzy hand to have in the first 10 cards.. I wonder how many poisons he has lol. No backstab, evisc, or assassinate in this deck but oh well..
Next game, I play a paladin with 3 true silvers, guardian of kings, argent protector, argent commander + blessing of might combo that gets my boulderfist for a divine shield. LOL. We are not even halfway through our decks! These are games 1 and 2 btw.. This is a nightmare for a rogue with no removals and I still WON. WTF IS GOING ON. I think I'm done with EU for now..

I could change the world, but it is not open sourced.
