Has anyone noticed how polarized winrates are with regard to coin?
Going 1st is MUCH more advantageous than normal.
Based on personal experience I would have said the opposite. Being able to play two one drops is enormous. And using the coin to get a turn one play if you don't have one drops is extremely powerful. Early on there is low risk and huge reward for every card played so play as much as you can. Later on the risk tends to increase making you more conservative in playing cards, until you fall behind.
The biggest issue I have had in the Brawl is when I draw too many big cards. That has screwed me over far more than the random spells. One game I had 4 nine mana legendaries in my had on turn four (two were King Crush).
It is interesting to try and play around spells that may be cast when you summon the minion. It's very random so I'm not saying playing correctly adds more than like 5-10% to your winrate, but it's still interesting.
Also, I like the timing of the brawl: this is a brawl where you can expect to get your three wins with any class in less than 10 games and that's a super cool option to have for casuals with the expensions release quests.
With that said, it could be improved a lot by each minion casting a spell of its own cost. You could actually do plan to some extent in that case and it'd be more balanced as small minions couldn't have so huge effects on the board.
This is one of my favorite Brawls, and I'm really glad it's back. Randomness factor makes for very interesting games. You also get to try cards that otherwise never get played, and random spells cause unexpected twists and turnarounds, causing you to win or lose games that seemed already decided.
This brawl made TOTAL sense!! But it was kind of a secret, that tavern brawl meant that EVERYONE could get to play with the new minions and spells. even if they where totally random.
I was disappointed too, until I realized they probably did that on purpose.
So I like this brawl actually.
