There is a reason. Without revenue, Blizzard cannot continue to make Hearthstone. I happen to like Hearthstone, so I'd prefer that Blizzard continue to make money.
What is irrational is all the free players who think Blizzard should make it easy to be a permanent free player.

Haven't seen a single rational argument from the no voters.
This game does not attract new players because of how much is required to build 1 decent deck.
You either have to grind for several years or spent hundreds. I would never recommend this game to anyone in it's current state.
The game is about the same as it's ever been for new players other than like right from day one, as long as you play standard. There's a reason why there's standard and wild, and that's so that new players can get into the game and not be overwhelmed. I don't even have all the classic set (playing on and off since 2014) but I just don't understand why making them free would be a good thing for blizzard. It would literally make it easier to be F2P as people would be able to grind more easily for expansions, rather than needing to fill up on classic cards and use all their dust on that. I can see why it may be nice for all those who don't have the cards or time to grind, but at the same time, I don't understand how it's any different than getting into the game 2 or 3 years ago, yet people have been doing.
Plus, on a more selfish note, part of what I enjoy about the game is getting and earning cards, choosing which are best/most fun to craft etc. Same goes for classic set - I've still never crafted Deathwing but I'm looking forward to the day I have some dust to spare.
I believe this is a wayyyyy better idea. It would be cool if they could do it as a 'deck pack' so that it's added straight to their deck list or comes with a mini tutorial about putting it together.

free is extreme lowering the cost of crafting wild cards would be better.

What about all the free legendary cards and packs that you guys got that new players can not get. You can't have it both ways. This game's starting content compared to other F2P games is a joke. Even with the entire classic set free you won't be making any good decks but at least you can have some fun trying.
You are still going to have to start collecting from 3 - 6 expansions for standard and many more for wild.
Many other games improve their starting experience after release. Destiny 2 was free for a while. Did all the people who bought it cry? Maybe some did but it was to pull new players in who then might buy expansions. It worked.
Starcraft 2 was made F2P and offered some free expansions. Wow has offered free expansions too when you bought the latest one.
Why is Hearthstone lagging behind other Blizz/Activision titles for improving the game state for new players.

I think everything should be free in HS except cosmetic things like card backs, hero portraits & golden cards. Believe me whales will still spend thousand of dollars for these cosmetic things like there is no tomorrow. It is a win-win situation for everyone.

What people here don't realise is that this is a card COLLECTING game.
If you are handed the collection over, there's not much to work for isn't it? Also, part of the value from the cards comes from their rarity.
Even know, not everyone has 2 Brawls or 2 Pyroblasts, and definitely not every single top-tier classic legendary.
I started a new account in November and got a semi-decent collection in 3 weeks. Nothing fancy, but definitely enough to try out a many things.
What they could improve at, is starting dust amount after finishing starter ranks, better matchmaking and fixing casual (imo, the best thing they could do there is giving the option to ban 6-9 non-legendary cards).
I understand this arguement and I would argue that this strategy will not deter them. The question is, would these players, who have every card in the game, really care, if people are getting cards from 3-5 years ago for free?
And by the way, who says that by just changing nothing they are going to retain all whales and not slowly over time loose more and more players who spend a lot of money, while the hurdles for new players (and therefore new income sources) stay as high as they are?

The problem here is that we don't have hard data on how much Blizzard actually makes from classic/wild packs and old adventures. My assumption for my initial post was that it is nowhere near the money they are making from actual new expansions.
The reallity of things is probably that most players who are going to buy packs from that time already did, this includes whales since they already have all cards. So the thing Blizzard should be interested in is selling more packs of future expansions, what means that they need to expand the player base. This is pretty hard though, since the hurdles for new players are extreme. So all in all they would trade the revenue they might have made from selling old stuff for an expanded customer base.

We indeed don't have hard data, so either assumption could be true. I am pretty certain that most new players would buy the welcome bundle at least so that is one moment classic packs are bought.
However I believe a big company like blizzard has an idea what would bring them the best revenue or check if things should be changed because of decreasing amount of players.
If they would get more revenue (mid to long term) by making (part of) the packs free they will do it.
The alternative I proposed would resolve most issues for new players and would be less of an impact to Blizzard.
As drunkenbunny above this post mentioned if they would add a small tutorial to those decks that would be of even bigger benefit.
There have been plenty, you can't just disagree with them or choose to ignore them, throw in an assertion that no rational explanations have been given and declare yourself king of debates. That isn't how it works.
Your last paragraph is absolute nonsense, you're simply perpetuating a myth and asserting it with confidence that some will assume it's fact.
I haven't grinded for years or put hundreds in, no where near either. I started playing around koft but very, very casually. I've bought the welcome bundle and pre ordered twice, had 2 lengthy spells of not playing the game and generally play it on mobile, during any breaks or whilst watching TV. I have an OK collection, a few strong decks and 18k in dust because I prepared well for the hall of fame switch.
There are some decent points from both side of the argument, try to be objective and you might see that it isn't all so black and white.
There are still thousands of cards to collect even with the entire classic set free. There is no "value" to the cards. They can not be traded.
Still nobody in the no camp with a good argument.
Would you recommend this game to any of your friends? You are a pretty lousy friend if you answer yes.

Hey, if they want to do it fine. Just give us a heads up and I'll dust every single classic card since I'll be getting them all back for free. I've been playing since the end of the beta and I only just got a complete set of classic legendaries (I learned the hard way when I got a Millhouse Manastorm out of a pack and thought the game broke). I buy expansions but I've never bought classic packs so that's why it took so long.
The cards you own have value. The time and money spent on them is what they’re worth. What are you going to do about those 1500+ classic packs I’ve opened over 4 years ?
If there's no value to the cards, then I guess you don't play a single epic or legendary card in your decks, and disenchant them the moment you open one.
Nobody was talking about real money value. In that sense nothing has any value because it's digital and you don't even own your own collection.
I have recommended this game to many of my friends. I also let them know about the terrible match making system and the grind.
That's what "lousy" friends are for.
But keep ignoring all the arguments that will surely get you somewhere.
You're extremely blinkered and clearly have no time for any opinion or agenda that doesn't match you own. Debating or discussion is not your bag, it would be better if you just left it alone to be honest. You're now at the point of just repeating the same thing, no one is going to change your mind and your posts are steadily creeping towards intolerance. I don't think there's much left for you to really add to this discussion.
There have been plenty of alternative ideas or reasons people wouldn't like this change. You're literally just ignoring them or saying they aren't good reasons, which is your opinion. If you really can't grasp why someone might have a problem with it, even if you personally disagree with it, you're beyond help.
Reading this makes me shake my head. Poor society ...... We should make the game 10$ per month to play and all cards for free..... I prefer to construct decks and play WITH others to see concepts working and compete with others independent from "collections". I basically pay to play and honour the development of a great game. When i play games i prefer that everyone has the same precondition (from the game setting). Same for plaing RPG´s. Thone leveling/grind gamestyle got disgusting ^^. Maybe i should go back to chess but that one got booring 25 years ago ....
The collection is basically not sellable and has no value. It´s all a colourful virtual imagination. If all classic become uncraftable basic cards, unlocked with game numbers, i won´t loose anything. Shure i would like to get dust back for crafting set cards.
I understand that Blizzard want´s to make money so it it just won´t happen. They set on people´s "Greed" and collecting urge. It´s human :-).
