OTK decks might not be brainless (especially in Mecha'thun you have almost no space for errors), but the design simply sucks behind that. There are simply matchups with a 99% win chance. That design sucks.
Pro players say the same. OTK decks are not healthy in any card game. Every aggro meta is counterable by some decks. OTK decks are mostly counterable by super agressive decks. Not good at all.
"I do think that it's a toxic deck" "but that's not why I make this thread"
and everybody is discussing about how toxic or not toxic is this deck. other people just discuss what does a combo deck mean, while other like me are passing by looking for an answer as to:
Why are there suddenly so many Mecha'thun decks?
Which is the original question the OP asked and is still probably unanswered.
Because there is not. I think that the number of Mechathun decks is more or less the same as in the past months.
I would guess that another reason mechathun decks are so popular is because not many people tech against them. If everyone ran Hakkar, Zihi and geist, they would disappear. It's probably that sweet spot where they aren't popular or successful enough to be teched against. Everyone is gearing towards beating the decks that are the most common. Dunno about you but I see more priests, hunters and paladins than anything else, I want to concentrate on those matchups.
Druid is countered by Geist or by not killing their last minion before MechaThun. Warlock is at a disadvantage against all Hunter and Odd Paladin/Rogue decks that the ladder is currently infested with atm, since tapping to search your combo leaves you pretty vulnerable. Priest is indeed annoying to play against but is much less consistent than the life tap Warlock or the ''Cycle 10 cards in a turn Auctioneer'' Druid.
I am not a big fan of cards that have "win the game" printed on them, like Mecha'thun and the Four Horsemen. Togwaggle/Hakkar decks are similar to Mecha'thun in that they focus on emptying your deck. However, they use established game mechanics (damage due to fatigue or corrupted blood) to kill the opponent. It is crazy when you have 30 health and a big stack of armor and your opponent is almost dead but plays one card that ignores all that and says "Win game now!"
As for the why, I think Odd Warrior has something to do with it. I mean anyone who’s ever had to watch some asshole with 50 armor at turn 25 has dreamed of bringing him to 0 in one turn... I think that reason applies to all the OTK decks.
It's because of Deathstalker Rexxar and OTK decks. Since you can't really kill most of these decks by playing aggro anymore, the level of aggro is decreasing. And hence the rise of Mechathun. Same thing goes for Midrange. What's the point of playing a midrange deck when you can't get past the stall tactics of most any deck out there. It's either play super aggro and hope that you draw better, or play OTK / Mechathun and same thing, hope you draw good.
Count how many times you play and get wrecked by 60 damage to face from Rogue or Priest. It's the new rock paper scissors galaxy. Aggro/OTK/Mechathun/Control.

This is probably spot on. Looking at the latest HS Replay data, the highest winrate decks are aggro, and Odd Paladin on top typically loses to Odd Warrior. So if early in this nerf cycle people expected Odd Warriors to pop up to counter the eventual increase in Odd Paladin players, then Mecha'thun decks could have become more popular momentarily as they can sometimes handle the aggressive decks with the right draws AND they counter mega armored Odd Warriors because of the "Win the Game" condition from Mecha'thun.
Zihi, Hakkar, and Giest are definitely all great ways to counter them. I personally love finding ways to use Hakkar, but mostly I think he works best in Druid. Had a Quest Priest Hakkar deck early in the rotation, but it was a bit slow and wasn't a mill, Tog, and kill your opponent type of deck. Relied on both the Corrupted Bloods, Seance on Amara, and a big tempo swing late with Princess Talanji after using things like Stonehill and Bone Drake to get large minions not starting in your deck. It was fun to play, but super coin-flippy really.
Because people are tired of 50 armor Warriors. Odd Warrior is singlehandedly locking two entire archetypes - aggro and midrange - from playing the game. What, you think all those people went and crafted warrior? No, they're the endless OTK decks you're seeing. The rise of OTK can be solely laid at the feet of Odd Warrior and Big Spell Mage.

if there is a 99% chance your deck loses to combo decks and you're seeing a lot of combo decks then maybe you should change a card or two. Putting in a tar creeper just for aggro makes sense, so why not tech against combo? most of the anti combo cards are 6 drops so you can't play them in odd warrior but odd warrior is just as polarizing and uninteractive in it's aggro matchup so it honestly deserves to auto lose to combo. There is a reason people call odd warrior notk.
Plenty of pro players love combo decks so that isn't true at all. The current crop of combo/otk decks are actually highly counterale with control decks. Mechathun crumbles to Zihi, Geist ruins Hakkar and Mechathun druid, combo paladins can be put in tough spots with Zihi, nerubian unraveler is seeing a lot of use for combo in general as well as locking out some decks completely. Every one of these decks revolves around drawing a ton of cards which you can slow down with even just a little pressure.
The only combo deck that is completely uninteractive and can just one shot you with little you can do about it is cloning gallery priest which is a problematic deck. They can just kill you on turn 9 if they draw (or don't draw) the right cards and that is kind of bs.

I packed Mecha'thun so I ocasionally play it in decks. If I had Hakkar, I'd ocasionally play mechathun counter.
Playing Hearthstone in German solely for Garrosh sounds. Sieg oder Tod!

Because everyone is god fucking tired of ass cancer 80 armor warrior decks?
Equality nerf fucked OTKpala, so a different OTK is more popular now.
The other recent nerfs also benefit mechathun decks, probably why we're seeing more of them now.
whats tech best against Mechathun decks?
This is why we need a neutral card disruption option.
Outside of warlock I guess Mojomaster is the best option right now other than rushing them down?
.
Saronite Taskmaster . You just have to play it right before they empty their deck and are about to OTK.
Make a few copies just in case it gets taken out.
It actually creates the minion on their side after all minions are cleared from board making the end game not work.
It works well against warlock, priest, and druid. I've done it many times.
Mecha'thun had babies.
I have had no success with Mecha thun decks...waste of time.

Pretty much every Control Player when getting beaten by an OTK.
