In the beginning of Boomsday, people experimented with Mecha'thun but it quickly died out because it didn't really work.
Now, for some reason, it has gained a huge boom in popularity. You see mecha'thun warlocks, mecha'thun druids and Mecha'thun priests all over. Why?
I do think that it's a toxic deck as no deck should just focus on surviving instead of actively killing your opponent, as there are way too many cheap removals and ways to stay alive in the game without attacking the opponent, but that's not why I make this thread. I'm just curious as to why it suddenly has risen in popularity so much. Did they start playing it heavily at a tournament or something?
Its not a toxic deck type. Its a combo deck that takes skill to play. Combo decks have been around for a long time. The priest variant usually uses the quest Psycic Scream and DK. It will be gone after rotation in standard unless priest gets more board clears.
It kinda does focus on killing your opponent. Contrast it with odd warrior which does nothing ever except kill everything on the board, and wait for you to run out of stuff.

While I can't attest to witnessing this rise of Mecha'thun decks, I will say that as the meta shifts and players refine concepts, it's not completely uncommon to see something that started as a flash in the pan come back as a more serious deck.
Also, I agree that the deck isn't good for the game. It would be fine if it were more difficult to pull the OTK off, but with all the draw and hard removal for cheap, it's basically an OTK deck for the masses: easy to understand, easy to play. Pathra from Omni said it's combo on easy mode.

To me, a toxic deck is something different. A deck so stupid to play that every bot can handle it and win, that's a toxic deck! Any deck that requires skill is welcome in this game. Also: relying on a single win condition can be dangerous. There are plenty of ways to counter this deck (some times a single card can destroy a Mecha'thun deck)

i just hate how uninteractive they are to play against.
would rather face Shudderwock spam, atleast that otk had a chance to fail if the wrong order went off
What? Against Shudderwock, your only chance to win with a control deck was for them to get it wrong. With Mechathun, you can actively disrupt their combos with cards such as Geist or Zihi.

Wtf, how is Shudderworck better? Countering that deck completely relied on being aggressive or RNG. For me that was the worst combo deck that ever existed, since it didn't even require any combo, you just played cards on curve and then slam Shudderwock in the end.
Mecha'thun decks are very well countered by cards like Zihi or Geist and that is healthy for the game
This post is a bullshit... I hate these kind of topics, that start complaining as soon as they lose a few games. These decks are not unbeatable, and as many users already mentioned on all these cry-baby posts, most if not all of the Mechathun decks will be dead in April
Most of the time it's Mecha druid that I see. I can't even remember the last time I saw a priest version. I run a lot of decks with skulking geist now, pretty funny when you throw it down and you can almost see the disappointment on the opponents face :D
"I do think that it's a toxic deck" "but that's not why I make this thread"
and everybody is discussing about how toxic or not toxic is this deck. other people just discuss what does a combo deck mean, while other like me are passing by looking for an answer as to:
Why are there suddenly so many Mecha'thun decks?
Which is the original question the OP asked and is still probably unanswered.
The druid version of the deck is fine to play against. I also don't see a problem with the warlock version. The priest version is hideously toxic, but only because it takes zero skill. It's essentially a draw Hemet early= insta win deck. Even Hemet and mechathun aren't the actual problem, it's double psychic scream that makes the deck hopeless to beat if Hemet is out on curve.
As to increased popularity? Druid got nerfed to hell. Druid players have had to change their decks, and mechathun is the only really reliable choice.

quoting myself because there is no other post in this thread that is actually relevant to the OP. I believe the reason for that is the slow decline of aggro decks, and the rise of other slow/combo decks on the ladder.
Holy wrath paladins instead of Odd Paladins, the rise of Control Priest to counter all those hunters, Odd rogues are slower than ever right now, Odd Warriors are countering some other fast decks on the ladder.
All these are factors as to why a combo deck with an "I win" condtion no matter the life total of your opponent is going to rise when the meta finally slows down, just like what we are facing now. Oh, and the fact that people want to try out new decks while the meta is slow is another huge factor, trying a slow deck just for fun in a really fast meta where you never get to pull the combo isnt fun at all.
Anyway, i dont think there are TOO many of them on the ladder, and as other people have mentioned, come April we are replacing 3 sets with 1, and i doubt that we'll get so much removal in 1 single set, to offset the loss of 3 sets, so Mecha'thun decks might have problems in April, maybe make a comeback in exp 2 or 3 of next year.
Those are my thoughts on your question, and on a sidenote. I agree that these decks(skill or no skill) are "toxic" or whatever you want to call them. Any deck that doesnt contest the board in any way feels bad to lose against(Quest Mage, Freeze Mage, Mecha'thun decks now), as they often give you the feeling of hopelessness, "i couldnt do shit because the kept removing, and then they just won without actually doing anything on the board". And the times you do win against them, you are like "lol hurrdurr that guy didnt stand a chance against my board". The human brain clutches to bad experiences however, and thats why you feel like they are so bad to play against. Its just a phase, always at the end of an expansion cycle we have cancer decks of all sorts, remember last year's cancer Cubelock? Well its that time of the year now, but at least no deck is as broken as original Cubelock.

If you are in your first year of playing please read this post.
Dust does not burn a hole in the jar. Be careful what you craft, especially before and right after a rotation.

That's why you add Quest to Odd Warrior deck.

"Any deck I don't like loosing to is toxic." - Every OP posting about a deck on hearthpwn.

It is not the topic, it is the comments that show how mindless the deck is.
We make our world significant through the courage of our questions and the depth of our answers.
Any deck people lose against = toxic deck.
Any deck people use against more than once in a row = BAN IT!
