Hey guys, I've been seeing a ton of Odd Paladin lately, especially in the brawl, so I decided to play it's worse match-up: Control Priest.
It seems like the deck received a few new additions this season and it feels really good in the meta at the moment.
Do you think it's only temporary because of all the hunter/odd paladins on ladder at the moment or do you think the deck now has a solid place in the meta?
I was going to bring control priest aswell. Whatever happens, mass hysteria is really good removal, especially against wide boards, so I can see some iteration of priest going a little more late game oriented living off that card for its earlygame
The control dragon priest has been working well for me, especially against the Pallys. New 1 damage aoe dragons take care of the 1/1s while the old 3 damage aoe dragons still take care of the buffed ones.
Control Priest was always a good enough deck to play. It absolutely manhandles aggro thanks to multiple boardclears and Psychic Scream is incredible against Cube Hunter.
On the other hand, you're incredibly weak to combo decks of which we have a ton right now. Kingsbane absolultely ruins you, OTK Paladin (Shirvallah version)
Honestly, Kingsbane alone just looks so absurdly powerful at the moment that I don't see any control deck being able to win once the meta settles.
You heard it here first, they're gonna nerf it by making Leeching Poison a 1-mana (your hero has lifesteal this turn) and neatly get around having to refund the legendary dust value.
The thing it has going for it is that it has a win condition with Alex and mindblast, against non armour and healing classes. The bad part is it's control.
Combo match-ups do feel hopeless but I'm not seeing many at the moment. If Kingsbane truly creeps up to the top of the meta I agree Control Priest will feel really lackluster though.
Odd Mage is also a good match-up so far but I suspect if my opponents drew Frostlich Jaina earlier it would have been much different.
Problem of Control Priest, much like its bitter sweet arch enemy Control Warrior, is that both decks are so strong vs aggro with also good single target removal, good healing abilities. But both deck doesnt have a solid winconditon in slower match atm, both struggle vs OTK deck or Easy infinite value like rexxar or jaina. Also Kingbane exist and stronger than ever, lol.
My advice, is wait until next HS year which is next expansion,to get rid of all the OP cards, to play true Control again. Priest will lose a lot of good card but Control Warrior will be insane for sure

Not sure that's entirely true. It may not be uber consistent given the dependence upon Shadow Visions, but if you can find just one extra Mind Blast, Alexstrasza into a barrage of Mind Blasts, Shadowreaper Anduin hero powers, and possibly a Holy Fire can close games in a hurry against any non-armor class. Things like Shudderwock and Kingsbane are certainly unfavorable, but they're not the auto-lose matchups that it would be for a pure value/fatigue based control deck.
And I sort of wonder if any of the new cards could help you generate a 1-cost Malygos or Velen to make that a truly dangerous combo.
I have been playing control priest the past couple days and feels great. I am very lucky I have not came across any Kingsbane or Odd Warriors but it beats spell/secret hunter every time and it makes me so happy lol. Like there is zero need to actually attack and activate the secrets. Its very easy to clear the 3/3 wolfs and everything else they have. Then just be anduin shadowreaper, alex face, then a couple mind blasts and you win! I cant stand hunter.
And i agree, Kingsbane, Odd Warrior, and OTK decks wreck this control priest deck. Very hard to beat kings bane when you alex his face and next turn hes full health because his weapon is so big with life steal. Odd warrior just creates armor too easily, and OTK is just harder to be faster when control priest usualy is like 2 turns to win. (Alex) and then mind blast
I haven't tried out a control priest yet even though I have the means to make even a quest Priest deck but I've been playing Mecha'thun Priest and it is doing really well against All flavors of hunters doesn't give a damn about DK Rexxar in fact it just slows the game down which is what Mecha'thun decks want while feasting on the Big Spell/Odd Mages, Odd Paladins, All the Warrior decks and Taunt Druids that are popular in the meta right now. Psychic Scream OP..turns off Rhok'delar and To My Side.
Mass Hysteria has some neat applications outside of just removal doing funny stuff like activating some of Hunter's own secrets, your Zilliax getting more heals while softening up the board and probably more that I can't think of at the top of my head. I severely underestimated this card it's like a way better Brawl.
Control Priest got me to a golden icon with some climb with Spiteful Priest and Reno Priest.
Right now, I don't know, it feels like it lack a stable win condition. The deck runs smoothly, but after you take the board, what do you do?
Dragon Priest gets you minion in, Big Priest is a whole lot of fun and I'm trying to adapt some sort of Miracle Priest.
But really, the lack of Win condition is bothering me since you will insta lose against Druid and most OTK.
So Priest is good if you face a lot of aggro and midrange. Other than that, good luck.
If you want strong and fast win condition play combo dragon priest. Almost as good against aggro and midrange due to Pyromancer and Duskbreaker clears, but also strong against all the gazillion armor and healing classes. However it is much more skill requiring than control dragon priest. This is the list I am using in legend and MetilHS took rank 9 Legend with a similar list -Scorcher +Twilight Acolyte.
After I reach rank 5 in wild with steal priest, I think I might make a standard version of it.
Tbh I am not really afraid of decks like Kingsbane rogue, since I can just steal their win-condition. My issue are combo decks in general (shudderwock, all sorts of druid decks, maybe some mecha'thun ones). There isn't a hand disruption, so I don't know how I will counter them.
[edit] So the best way to build a priest deck is to include some sort of a win-condition. Some people mentioned innerfire, we can also build an improved version of Mecha'thun.

Got a list for your wild version? I've been trying out some stuff without much success

Since when does Benedictus steal? All you do is copy the deck.
Then we should name Thief priest decks into Copy priest.
Mass Hysteria is the best card after Hunters playing their spellstones.
Perhaps. Death Grip is a steal card. So is Cabal Shadow Priest . Archbishop Benedictus , definately not.
