I actually made it again. I had 45 games until last Thursday, the 16th, I was 24-21 overall (plus a couple games over my lunch break, I think that was about even). I decided to actually play seriously for the first time this weekend (girlfriend was out of town bahah), went 34-15 overall.
Started the climb with Tempo spellpower mage, then switched to my good ol Deathrattle hunter (the deck that got me legend last day of the July season) featuring a couple Boomsday cards. Went on a 12-0 run to finish the climb. That includes a 4-0 against both warlocks and druids. Nothing could stop me last night, it felt pretty crazy.
I think I got fairly lucky. I was 9-10 against rogues on the month, so they were kinda troublesome (both odd and deathrattle rogue were tough, tempo/miracle was a cakewalk). I was 2-4 vs mages (a big spell mage actually beat my tempo mage haha - that's not supposed to happen >.>). Most faced were Warlock (23%), Rogue (20%), and Druid (18%). Nothing felt overly oppressive, a lot of the games were extremely close.

No but I am planning to do it so in September for the first time :) My best was rank 5 (i was grinding "hard" only one time tho).
How many games would I need to play approximately with tier 1 deck to reach legend? Probably around 300-400 for an good player?
The first time I made it, I played 230+ games (somewhere around there) from rank 8. I think I had a 58-60% win rate. Obviously if you can bring the win rate up the games played will be exponentially reduced.

At the start of the month I played a lot of different decks(my own decks and netdecked), I was not trying to rank up, I just wanted to play different stuff and try different stuff out. A little later, I started ranking up with Malygos druid and deathrattle hunter(to rank 3), after that I also tried deathrattle and odd rogue(to rank 2). After that I switched to the control priest(to rank 1). And in rank 1, I tried to do it to legend with odd warrior, but my local meta was not really aggro oriented anymore, so I switched to odd rogue to do it fast .... And it worked!
To the stats: I needed a total of 121 games from - rank 5 to legend - with a 65,3% winrate. (I mentioned before that I played different stuff at the start of the month and these different decks are included in these 121 games.)
For me, the majority of the ladder was full of warlocks(33,1%), druids(16,5%) and hunters(13,2%). But, at the higher ranks I also met a lot of odd rogues. Also at the higher ranks I met more control warlock players than zoo warlock players.
In the screenshot are the stats for this season/month.
Reached Legend with this stock Deathreattle Hunter I found on here. My winrate for Hunter is slightly off since I was learning to use Arcane Tracker and played a game in casual and lost to a Hunter. My winrate should be 55% for Hunter, not 50% and my total winrate should be 60%, not 58%. From Rank 2 with zero stars to Legend, I played 55 games, won 33 and lost 22. Keep at it, don't play if you're in your feelings (salt, rage, etc....) and take breaks. Good Luck!
Use of your language aside, you are 100% right. Know the meta well and decks and counters will make the run from r5 to legend much much easier. That said not everyone has access to alot or all meta decks to counter queue the ladder with.
I played Kingsbane rogue to r1 and got stuck against a wall of agro bouncing between r2-r1, so I switched decks and had a 9 game ws from r2 straight to legend this season.
Hit Legend this weekend with Exodia Paladin with a Boomsday Mech package. Feels really good to hit legend with an off-meta deck. Deck has few bad matchups, only against Shudderwock Shaman I had the fealing I could not win (encountered only 1). There were some losses against Agro decks, but also win a lot of them. Against control you mostly win with Exodia. Even against Druid I could win most of the time.
I think I'm about to give up. I started the season at like R19. Played 250 games as Recruit Hunter, 100 as Odd Rogue and 100 as Big Spell. Another 100 as other decks. Little over 550 games all told. Never could go beyond R3.
After a year of playing tryhard Wild only I got Legend in Standard again this weekend. Used Odd Control Warrior until rank one some stars, then slowly declined back to rank 2 because there was not just enough aggro to prey upon and slow matchups are mostly bad. Swaped to Kathrena-Cube Hunter for slow but steady climb.
Reached legend for the third time in total, second time in standard. Climbed from 5 with a mix of midrange shaman and a variety of warrior decks. Odd control warrior carried me from the second half of rank 2 to legend.
I'll say, I enjoyed the first month of Boomsday. Healock isn't that bad when odd control warrior farms all aggro decks (odd pally, odd rogue, healock).
Our first month of The Boomsday Project!
Got there this month with Malywaggle.

I hit legend this season for the first time using Tempo Shudderwock Shaman https://tempostorm.com/hearthstone/decks/tempo-shudderwock-shaman-standard-meta-snapshot-aug-12-2018. The only mod I made to the deck was to replace the 2x Lightning Bolt with 2x Spellbreaker

Just snuck in with 4 hours left in the season! Woot!
