Hey guys. I wanted to do a discussion about the 2017 rotation and how it will affect all of the classes. I'm not a professional, but I do think just listing the meta-popular cards (or cards that make certain archetypes possible) that will rotate out and having a brief discussion of them will give people a good understanding of how the meta might change post-rotation. I also know that there will be one or two more expansions between Karazhan and the rotation, so those obviously can't be taken into account at this time. My analysis of each deck will be for its survival as we know it currently. I'm not trying to give a full analysis, just a brief summary of how each deck will be affected.
Druid
Yogg Druid - Hurt by the loss of Living Roots, Raven Idol, and Mulch. Will need some more cheap spell replacements if it wants to retain the powerful spell synergy it has today.
Midrange Hunter - Loses Huge Toad, King's Elekk, and Quick Shot. The loss of Quick Shot will hurt hunter in general quite a bit, as it is very flexible removal/face damage. The two-drops will likely be replaceable.
Secret Hunter - Loses Bear Trap, Dart Trap, and Lock and Load. The reason I mention Dart Trap is because that's one less secret your opponent will have to play around when you get secrets off Lock and Load. but Lock and Load rotates out, sooo...nevermind.
Tempo Mage - Loses Arcane Blast, Flamewaker, and Forgotten Torch. This obviously hurts the deck massively. Losing Arcane Blast hurts their ability to remove threats, and Flamewaker and Forgotten Torch severely cut the pressure this deck can put on opponenets.
Freeze Mage - Loses Emperor Thaurissan and Forgotten Torch. It seems to me that this would make the deck nearly unplayable. Losing the Emperor discount and the Forgotten Torch damage hurt so much.
Control/Grinder/Reno Mage - Loses Arcane Blast, Brann Bronzebeard, Ethereal Conjurer, Flamewaker, Forgotten Torch, and Reno Jackson. I know these decks were never top of the meta, but they are always run into every now and then. But with the loss of so many cards, it will be difficult for the decks as we know them to stay alive. And Reno mage is obviously completely dead.
Paladin
N'Zoth Paladin - Loses Solemn Vigil and Keeper of Uldaman. Looks like this deck will still be going strong, as these losses aren't too significant. Might need to make up for the lack of draw.
Murloc Paladin - Loses Anyfin Can Happen.....whelp, there goes that deck.
Resurrect Priest - Loses Resurrect, Excavated Evil, and Entomb. Losing Resurrect obviously hurts this new-found unicorn priest, so I'm not exactly sure what this means for the deck. If it gets stronger early game minions, I think it can survive as a pretty good tempo/midrange priest deck even without Resurrect.
Mill Rogue - Loses Gang Up. Mill rogue is dead unless they get a card that replenishes their deck.
Reno/C'Thun/Control Rogue - Loses Dark Iron Skulker, Tomb Pillager, andReno Jackson. Reno variant is dead, but cheeky C'Thun rogues will still likely be playable. Tomb Pillager is a great minion, and DIS is a good board clear, so controlish rogues will hurt a bit.
Midrange/Totem Shaman - Loses all the powerful cards that aggro shaman lost, plus Thunder Bluff Valiant. Midrange shaman as we know it will also be dead.
Control Shaman - Loses Elemental Destruction, Healing Wave, and Lava Shock. More painful losses for shaman. Given that most of shaman's power is from TGT and LOE, the class will likely see a big reworking after the next rotation.
Worgen OTK Warrior - Loses Emperor Thaurissan, making the combo impossible (unless you save coin all game lol). I imagine this deck will be replaced by the Arcane Giant OTK.
Arcane Giant OTK Warrior - Loses Emperor Thaurissan, but the deck doesn't need it to perform the combo if the giants cost 0.
C'Thun Warrior - Loses Brann Bronzebeard, Justicar Trueheart, Emperor Thaurissan, and Revenge. The loss of Brann and Emperor will make the triple C'Thun combo impossible, and the loss of Justicar will make warrior's survivability go down quite a bit.
Control Warrior - Loses Elise Starseeker, Justicar Trueheart, and Revenge. I'm not sure how this deck will do once Elise and Justicar are gone. Those are two very significant losses.
So that's really all I could think of. How do you guys think these decks will do after the rotation? Which classes, given our current card knowledge, do you think will be the best? The worst?
I would be extremely surprised if there wasn't a new expansion/adventure by the end of the year so its hard to judge what will be missed and what replacements we will get. That being said, I really hope we get more dragons as thats my favorite archetype and as a Priest main, I will miss it the most.
It's a little too early to determine what decks will die next rotation. There are 2 whole expansions to factor in; that's 18 class cards and a whole lot of neutrals. The post Kara meta isn't even settled yet. It could be that all the above listed decks aren't even on ladder in March 2017.
Yeah, I'll add card tags to make it easier to read. And yeah, I know that two more expansions can do a lot to change the meta, I just thought it'd be neat to look at how drastically the meta would change.
I also think it's very interesting to see which decks are losing next to nothing. This means that they will only get better after this rotation. Pretty much all forms of paladin will only get better.
Since we are still two more big expansions away from the upcoming rotation, it is hard to predict what is in store for Standard ladder in a year from now.
But as of now, it is a sure that all the top tier decks and almost all classes will suffer from the rotation.
IMO, Shaman, Mage, Druid, and Hunter will get hurt the most while Warrior, Warlock, Paladin have alternative cards to use.
The future for Priest, Rogue is pretty blurry to me, but I hope the best to them.
Feeling really sad reading this article :( My beloved Mage decks are losing so much. It's all upto the new expansions to see if viable replacements can keep Tempo and Value/Grinder variants alive. Warrior seems to be one of the least affected classes imo.
Probably think I would be playing Wild a lot next year onwards.
I really hope some cards get added to the core set.. stuff like Reno Jackson, Tomb Pillager and Living Roots seem really core to some classes.. but reprinting sych cards seem unneccessary.. and instead of progressing on certain classes they go to be a shitty class again or OP in wild (see shaman)

I agree to some extent, but it's really hard to determine which cards to add to the classic set. For example, Blackwing Corruptor is an automatic 2x in every dragon deck. Does he need to be in classic? It's hard to say. Anyfin Can Happen and Grim Patron are more cards like this, cards that define deck archetypes. But does that mean that they should go to standard forever? I honestly don't know.
The only ways to counter aggro will rotate out. Unless the next expansion releases close to none aggro cards and everything else is combo / control focused standard will get worse. Much, much worse.

The same was said this expansion, however, with aggro taking big hits as well, except shaman, it turned out to be mostly about midrange, tempo and desperate yogg plays.
Wild meta is better imo, even with zoo and secretpally going rampant.

You mean reno and justicar? I don't think they are the only way WOG and classic have ways to counter aggro too also we got 2 expansions before the rotation (1 with the standard we know.. and one with 2016-2017 stanadard)
I don't weep for Mage. Been running into a LOT of Mage decks with Prince Malchezaar, Medivh's Valet, Iceblock, Wild Pryomancer/Flamewaker, and Cabalist's Tome.

The next expansion is gonna be at the start of 2017... normally it would be later but they probably want to have one introduced when the previous expansions rotate out or else we will be stuck with only two sets.
no.. the next expansion will be november/december 2016 Blizzard stated expansion-> adventure-> expansion per year which means we got one expansion in the current standard and one expansion without totem golem, reno jackson and co.
We can just be sure about decks built around specific cards, such as all Reno decks (personally quite happy about this).
The others may be revitalised somehow or may not, we can't know now.
Surely we can say that Quick Shot or Living Roots or Justicar Trueheart etc are a big loss to their class/types, but that doesn't mean too much for the decks and archetypes they appear in, because of the possible future alternatives/replacements. Not yet, at least.

Blizzard already confirmed that will be 2 expansions and 1 adventure per year from now on.
Also I didn't realize Resurrect was a BRM card! I was pretty sure it was a Classic card. So sad :(

As a Mage player Tempo will be dead as we know it.
As a Paladin, only Keeper will be missed. Let's hope next two expansions bring new life to the sorely missed midrange variant.

Oh ok let me look into my crystal ball and see how every old deck and brand new deck types will do after tons of new unannounced cards are released.
