Hello. Here is my experience. I started playing Hearthstone in November 2015 on the EU server, and I have been rank 9 at best with my various midrange decks.
Mid-season I decided to try heading for Legend to see if I had at least the skill to achieve it, and by trying the best I could. No excuse. So I switched to a grinding deck: aggro shaman, and decided to play more, to keep using it until the end of the month and to track the stats. I thought I would at least hit rank 5 this month and would achieve Legend in the following seasons by getting better with this deck. I was wrong.
I struggled a little at rank 5-4, but the games were not harder at rank 3, nor 2, neither 1. The players had the same level of skill from rank 5 to 1 (+ the legend players I queued against). All I had to do was to keep playing, because the winning ratio that got me there stayed the same: 62%.
I finally hit Legend today! I think I will abandon my aggro deck now because aggro decks are not the funniest type to play with. Or maybe not: winning is like an addiction, you always want more. :-)
How many total games did you play this season to Legend?
Also, it's difficult to compare the skills of rank 3 to Legend players when you are playing an aggro deck and their game plan is to survive. most players from different ranks will make the same plays. It also depends on when in the month you are playing these rank 5 - 1 players. Toward the end of the season, the players there make misplays and aren't great. All the best players already made legend the first two weeks.
This data is of course very slim, but for those interested, I noted down the last 25 Standard Ranked games I had on Europe server. Started from rank 5 to rank 2, these are the classes I encountered:
Aggro Shaman: 6
Druid: 5 (beast or ramp/token)
Zoolock: 4
Tempo Mage: 3
Warrior: 3
Hunter: 2
Rogue: 2 (both in a row, but most likely you will see none to be fair)
It is hard to choose a class to reach legend. I think warriors have dropped because hunter is/was the first in usage according to VS, so people either go to Shaman or Druid to try to punish the Hunters. Zoo is solid too, but 2 of the Shamans I faced were rocking the new maelstrom portal, so if you play zoo try to play around that. Possibly Shaman is the best pick still for a run to legend. Good luck people!
You can't rely on VS data reports right now because the meta is not defined due to the release of a new expansion. Everyone is trying out new decks/classes/cards. There will prob not be a stable meta until the second half of next month.
Well I tried quite hard all this season, and I just couldn't make it to Legend.
Rank 3 was my limit, which I made to rank 3 with full stars multiple times throughout.
I tried many decks, Questing Rogue, Face Rogue, Miracle Giant Rogue, N'zoth Rogue, Midrange Hunter, Secret Hunter, OTK Worgen Warrior, but couldn't pilot any of them to success.
I guess I'm just not skilled enough, and I tilt.
So many games against Shaman just felt out of my hands though.

I know it feels dirty but just play aggro shaman..... if you have never been legend anyways.
im in rank 3 too , I feel so defeated when I win a game then lose the next, it feels like Im wasting time. The game should really allow win streaks all the way to legend, stopping at rank 5 is pretty ridiculous.
I once again take the title of the best top 10 legend player (every season) who can't break rank 10-15 consistently. I wish the competition was stiffer but unfortunately a lot of you guys fluke your way up there early in the season so I can't compete on an equal scale. Congrats on all those who made it to "legend" though lol.
I had a three week break this season. And started to play ranked yesterday. I'm now rank 11, undefeated since I started to play. I've been legend two times, and consistently hovering around the ranks 5 to legend every season, and believe me, It's super easy to break rank 10. Either you don't play enough, or you make a ton of misplays. The lower ranks are super easy, and the fact that you struggle with rank 15 is up to you and your "skill level", nothing else.

I began tracking my results in the middle of the season. I was at rank 9. I was at 75 wins 48 losses from there to the moment I reached Legend. My deck have been the same since the moment I added maelstorm portal to my aggro shaman, which should be when I was at rank 9.

I'd honest rather not make Legend than have to play a whole season as aggro Shaman.
It is difficult to accept when it happens, but it's just a game, a pressure that you put on yourself to reach your goal. Play to learn of your mistakes and Legend will come naturally.
At least that is what happened to me, "I was thinking I am gonna reach legend this month, I have never been that close" when I was rank 2 3 stars. Then I fell back 2 full ranks on the last day of the season. So I started to play just to improve my piloting of the deck and understand the different match ups better. 3-4h later I reached Legend.
Just try to answer the following questions, it should help you rationalize your climb:
Do I feel comfortable with the deck?
Did I misplay this game? If yes, did it cost me the game, could I have won the game otherwise? If No, what did my opponent do to beat me without me misplaying.
Do I understand the win condition(s) of the deck I am playing in the different match up I face?
Does my deck have some match ups that are close to unwinnable, do I see them often on ladder?
And if you play on NA I can spectate some of your games and maybe help you with those.
I indeed do play NA, I probably could use coaching, I mostly use Rogue and Warrior if you're experienced with those classes.

Obviously it's too late for me to reach Legend this season though.
I have been rank 3 for the past 2 days, I win a match then lose a match because the ladder is basically filled with aggro shaman. Its all luck at that point.
So frustrating and stupid . Blizzard needs to EXTINCT aggro shaman. Nerf their stupid cards

Don't want to hijack in this thread of yours, but I wanted to say that I now too managed to get my first time legend after trying several seasons now! :D One and a half hour before season reset.
Went with some homebrewn decks to Rank 10, went with C'thun Warrior all the way to Rank 1 5 stars. This is where I lost two times, one win away and really demoralized me. Tanked down to rank 2 0 stars, swapped to Control Warrior and never progressed further. Then I went with Miracle Rogue and won it all and got it!
I'm actually really happy with it! :D For you all, I did tracked my stats and winrates. For this season, I have played, from rank 11 upwards since the 20th of August, 500 games exactly (apparently), of which 261 won and 239 lost, a total winrate of 52%. Most played was C'thun Warrior with 111 wins and 71 losses (61%).
I had a total time played of 53.8 hours. The average game lasted 6.4 minutes over 10.7 turns (as I played Control decks obviously).
Dammit I was so close to Legend. Got to final boss 3 times and couldn't win. It's season's end ffs can't rank 3k or 2k just realize they are not getting top 100?

I thought that as well at first, but then I suddenly was in the same situation and thought:
"After all the hard work I put into this, I'm sure as hell not going to give it to him for free."
Still probably play slightly worse in after reaching legend, though (in addition to trying out lots of decks I have no clue how to play).

Maelstrom Aggro Shaman? Fair and balanced class?
