Hi all, hope you're all enjoying the new WOTOG expansion.
I just wanted to start a discussion on the balance between the differing deck types.
Since WOTOG released i have tried all sorts of decks including C'Thun Mage/Druid/Priest, Freeze Mage, Reno Mage, Y'arrrrgro Pirate, Patron Warrior, Control Warrior, Zoo lock, Face hunter.. to name a few.
And what I've found is that the balance between all the types (Aggro, Midrange, Tempo, Control) are far closer than before.
for example aggro decks, whilst losing some key cards, has just enough to continue winning against the other type of decks if played well, while control has still got to be smart in the early/mid game to overcome an aggro deck.
Obviously everyone is trying out the C'thun decks with all the classes and some versions are more competitive than others, some heroes more suited to a Cthun deck than others. But that is the meta within one type of deck.
The meta has shifted more towards control, with more taunt, and strong early minions to counter aggro, but imo it has in no way eliminated aggro.
In this thread I'm more focused on discussing the types of deck rather than the classes playing them. Even added a poll for fun.
The meta is far from settled, but I feel like all the major deck archetypes are pretty viable. If I had to go from best to worst, I'd probably say Midrange (if you count C'Thun as Midrange), then Aggro, Control (switch with Midrange if you consider C'Thun Control), and specialist (Yogg decks, mill decks). I haven't played as many games as I'd like to, though.
In my opinion the new meta is slower than the old meta. Combo decks are very viable in this moment, but there are a lot of control decks with c'thun or Control/tempo decks with N'zoth
I agree. The meta is a lot slower, to the point that I almost dont miss healbot or belcher. Its great.
I feel like there is a good balance between all major archetypes. You can play any of them and do really well if you are playing in a Conquest tournament format. The cards are really flexible in Standard and you can do a lot of things with them to this extent.
Balance in Basics
When it comes to ranked Standard play, it is unfortunately a game of numbers and the actual balance in power is going to still come down to a law of numbers. Because SO many people are playing aggro, it is skewed in its favor. You get quick games and you can jam enough to simply offset a loss or two quickly enough to still progress at a reasonable rate. But if you are looking to rank with a Control deck, these numbers are not really in your favor to the extent that I think it is really worth playing while ranking up. I usually end my seasons around rank 8-5 and with control decks I struggle to break rank 15 so far and a lot of it comes down to the fact that I can play roughly 3 or 4 times as many games in the same amount of time with an aggro deck.
This game is sadly just plagued when it comes to climbing a Ladder, and I really wish they would establish a scheduled tournament system for the game as I have slowly grown tired of climbing ladder - as with most of my fellow HS players, and it has gotten to the point where I know a lot of legend players in my area have lost interest in the game.

Tempo is king right now. And that's good, because no one has any idea how to play Tempo. The ones that do are just playing Arena.
