I know there are plenty of players that pvp in mercs just for the sake of pvp, even though it's a side mode of a side mode. That said, a not insignificant number of players do it because it's a quick and dirty means of getting a daily batch of random coins (in addition to the coins and packs from hitting ranks).
However, given that the distribution of random coins seem to be heavily weighted towards lower rarity mercs; the same ones that disproportionately get more coins from other sources, it steadily becomes more and more common that pvp rewards become more "useless" as coins for already maxed mercs are distributed. This will lead more and more players that pvp just for the rewards to begin to feel that it's no longer worth it. This in turn leads to further shrinkage of the (already tiny) mercs pvp pool, which then impacts the "pvp for pvp" players as well.

The mercenary developer team is good, the mode just needs competent people in its monetization.
