So I have spent over $400 on packs thus far including two pre release bundles. Everything was acceptable up until getting all the Merc characters... Then Attempting to level up characters and get some different Merc Hero skins. I can tell you I haven't cracked one diamond skin portrait in over 300 packs, I still have over 30 hero skins that I have not gotten, and I continue to get legendary, epic, and rare Merc coins for characters that are already maxed out, while others get very few coins. On the characters that are maxed and have tons of coin, you can't dust them or even spend them on their other portraits. The system is busted. It is not operating the way hearthstone packs do and the current system review rating I give is "Rip Off". I Truly hope they do something to compensate those of us who have wasted money in some way that at least let's us convert our hours and money wasted getting useless character coins into something playable!
Recommend waiting till they fix the system to buy any more packs once you have all the Mercs!
How are they broken? Diamond portraits are not guaranteed at all, they are extra cosmetic goods that you might open eventually, just like golden cards in regular HS, there's no guarantee to open a golden card of any rarity. About the excess coins, well that definitely sucks for sure, hope they fix it in the future but I doubt it. Honestly once you have all mercs or at least the good ones is better to stop buying packs (or save tasks ones).

It's not a CCG, so the packs were never designed to work like (traditional) Hearthstone. Thus the system isn't broken, so nothing to fix and unlikely to ever be changed.
It's somewhat ironic that the best workaround for the Merc packs issues is not to buy the product at all and stay FTP. The tail off in value of packs opened is so steep to the point that any amount of currency spent will be rendered essentially valueless later if you continue to play and accumulate resources over time.
It just goes to show how powerful the pity timer, duplicate protection and dust mechanics are in a gacha game. Opening vanilla HS packs is productive right up until you have completed a set, and even after that the dust you get has some reduced value. Merc packs by contrast can end up literally worthless once you've maxed a few rare and epic mercs.
I purchased around 30 packs with gold (nothing else) ... got a diamond Jaina Proudmore (I also have the basic version) ... which is a pity because even though it looks great, I never use her and she's still languishing at lvl 15.
I was kinda bummed when I got the diamond, because I would have preferred to get a legendary card I did not yet own (say Gul'dan or Rexxar, characters I actually like).
Ah well ... you win some, you lose some ... same can be said for your situation.

This is... sort of weird, though. Opening HS packs has *some* value but... not much.
They just don't respect us - their players. I personally like wasting my time, and do daily quests, but spending 400$ to get nothing at all... They need at least to implement duplication protection system like in traditional HS, and add timers.
crazy 400 bucks u could have put that on some stonks and doubled your money ....
but yeah that sucks that's why i stopped giving money to this company you can not honestly say after every purchase u walked away happy and say you got your VALUES worth most of the times people regret and have dissapointment
Knew before that mercs is designed for whales but I didnt really pay attention before how the packs works (mostly because the mercs explanation itself by Blizz was confusing as fuck). When I received skins, I was kinda surprised. My main problem is just, that HS became to expensive for us whales, even without mercs. Bundes, Bundes, Bundles, Bundles everywhere. Impossible to keep up without investing a fortune.
Mercenary is both bad for whales and Free to Play players.
Getting literally Thousands of coins for max Mercs is so annoying.
Actually, Mercenaries are great for F2P players. It is way easier to get all mercs maxed than, for example, get all cards in classic Hearthstone back in 2013

Can you elaborate on this? As someone who's played Hearthstone as semi-F2P since 2014 (I spent money on it, but I'm hardly a whale) I find hearthstone is flat out more F2P-friendly and gives more rewards per dollar than I was spending when I played back when the game came out. And Mercenaries even on paper is much more efficient for F2P players who use bounties and farm tasks than it is people who spend disgusting amounts of money on merc packs.
I don't consider myself a whale, but I do spend money somewhat consistently (maybe I'm a baby whale? a dolphin?)
Anyhow, I will buy bundles when I perceive them to be a good value, but I don't feel compelled to buy -every- bundle. The new expansion bundles with the guaranteed legendaries, cardbacks and whatnot that come out to less than $1 a pack? Sure. The class specific bundles? Hard pass. The really good, usually $5 ones that tend to be one-per-customer? Okay! Those $20 gold pack bundles? Haha, fuck you, Blizz! THAT's the type of customer I am, that's my profile.
I didn't buy any of the Mercenaries pre-order bundles because I was very wary of the mode, and they didn't seem like good value. I DID buy the $5 welcome bundle. I have every merc except Van Cleef, and the Van Cleef bundle does NOT look like good value to me.
So I have spent over $400 on packs thus far including two pre release bundles.
There's nothing wrong with packs. You are just bad with money.
There is no possible reason you should have spent $400 on Mercenaries packs in the first place. With no coin exchange system in place, even a rudimentary acquaintance with arithmetic would tell you you're going to end up with a huge surplus of coins.

When a system put in place to make money doesn't provide value to keep people spending it's broken. Thank you for your opinion on how bad I am with money. Let's compare portfolios, bank accounts, and cash flow.

Jesus, dude.
Same. Very disappointed. Such wasted coins & resources. They should introduce dust mechanics to solve this.

Sadly, you are forced to buy the same old packs the get the latest mercs if you miss the release promo period.
just should add new packs instead of placing the new mercs in the old packs to prevent further duplicate coins

Welcome to the world of gacha!

What do you get if you buy packs for a garbage gacha from a shit company.
You get what you fucking deserve.
