It's been quite a while now with no word on a balance patch. I don't think I've ever played such a badly balanced game. There's like a few mercs that everyone uses and their power level is insane. And there's like 70% of all mercs that are totally unplayable in both pvp and pve.
At 5000 rating everyone has pretty much the same team. There's maybe 10 mercs in rotation but not more. The pvp gameplay becomes extremely repetitive real quick and because everyone runs similar comps it's just a matter of rng that who gets their ability off first wins the game.
Mercs like Diablo, Dawngrasp and Cairne should have gotten a day 1 patch. Mercs that have one-shot potential at turn 1 like Guff and Samuro also needs a change.
Apparently on Iksar's latest AMA on twitter he mentions that it's still too early for a Mercs balance patch. The mercs people are using now are still vastly different than the popular builds that came out first.
I guess they think there is still room for people to figure out more builds to combat what's popular.
Why you play the mode? There is no rewards. Just casual gameplay. Play and focus on ranked and have a chance to win money. Merx is like playing super mario

Or is it totally figured out already?
Considering how few people they have for internal testing compared to all the players on a full release, I'd say it's pretty much figured out. The "bad" mercs are so underpowered that you can't even make them work even if you build a full comp around them.
If they bring the bad ones up in power and the overpowered ones down it might be different but that's not how it is. You can't even try to counter the meta because even though you might be favored in terms of color you still lose because the combos are too powerful.

If you're trying to make an argument for not playing the mode, maybe don't compare it to literally the most popular video game of all time.

I don't play video games to earn money, I can do that much more efficiently in my job. And I would become a streamer or play the lottery before I even attempt to earn money with Standard hearthstone
How much money did you earn with hearthstone since you first started playing the game ?

Why are you browsing, let alone commenting, a forum for a game mode you're not interested in?
Or do you have that big of a problem with people liking something that you don't?
It's too early for a balance patch because in addition to the meta still settling, bear in mind that many of what would likely internally be considered popular or counters, are mercs that many people -simply don't have-. It isn't like Hearthstone Prime where you can craft popular cards at will given enough dust.
That is to say, I'd still like some communication regarding the myriad of other things that needs to be addressed, like the dozens of tasks with misleading/incorrect names, treasures that make no sense (like Natalie getting holy power), things that flat out don't work (like Rigged Wiring having no effect on Bear Trap), what do to about maxed mercs and their thousands of useless coins and clarification/compensation regarding the Mysterious Stranger change.

For fun?
And if you need money I highly suggest getting normal job, to win something in hearthstone you basically need to treat it as full time job without guaranteed salary.
Tyrande's third ability can be fun, but her first two are unbelievably bad etc.
Good example of needing synergies. With enough arcane synergies, her first two will be very usable. Currently, she has only Millhouse to help her and it isn't enough.

Even with some synergies she's far too slow. If she was powerful enough to get targeted she'd be dead before she could even cast, let alone take advantage of her third ability. A lot of mercs are just far too slow in what has become a one-shot combo meta. Any control/healing comp just doesn't work because they are so slow and the combo damage is too high.

As you said "And there's like 70% of all mercs that are totally unplayable in both pvp and pve."
Main mode is PvE and I expect it is the one that will see way more development. And Tyrande can become good there.
As for PvP... You never know. We can get a merc with an equipment with passive effect like "all your arcane abilities are 3 faster and cast twice." (Well, probably not that broken but saying there are no possible arcane synergies to make Tyrande good is unwise)
I think the mode is fundamentally broken and needs mechanical changes to be good. Why would you play a merc that takes counter damage when it attacks and is affected by taunt, when you can play mercs that do just as much damage, don’t take counter damage ignore taunt and possibly can aoe? Why would protectors have a chance against casters, especially when you have multiple combo ability casters?

What I would do is first cut back.. WAY back on speed altering abilities across the board, and once that's done, give most "attack" abilities an inherent speed advantage.
Mercs will never be patched and balanced like a normal game - it's a Gacha - that means balancing will largely come in the forms of new insanely power-creeped content designed to directly counter the most powerful content from the prior period. Forcing all players to keep up, enabling new players to jump in, as the old methods/characters are suddenly useless, no matter their level.
The game mode doesn't need balancing as a priority anyway IMO, it needs features - it should never have been launched in it's current state - compare to Darkest Dungeon where all your charatcers are indivduals with personality traits that shift over time...how they all have gear slots and therefore loot on your 'runs' actually matters. I'm sorry but Mercs is paper thin in comparison. New zone and all you get a colour hue shift, that says it all. Bleh.

Wow imagine playing a game just cause it's fun. And it's even funnier that you compare it with mario games, something that a lot of people absolutely love and is one of the most played franchises of all time. Love it when dumbasses kill their own stupid atguments with even a dumber argument that they think are clever.

... so, exactly the same as Hearthstone.

Shouldn't be the announcement of the next expansion be right around the corner somewhere in November? Maybe they try to hold up until the new expansion.
And the focus in the HS community is anyway gone to mercenaries and battleground.

Sounds like a troublesome life with that attitude
Majority of unplayable mercs are mercs that have no (enough) synergies yet.

Aome mercenaries are blatantly bad, either in a vacuum or compared to others.
For example Illidan is a much weaker version of Samuro. Tyrande's third ability can be fun, but her first two are unbelievably bad etc.
Even if the best heroes aren't "solved", it's very clear that some are straight up bad.
