Guldan is an orc but he's not Horde. Millhouse is a gnome but he's not Alliance. Although, I think I saw Arthas fall under the Alliance banner buff when he's not Alliance but he is human. They really need a flag on the characters portraits because it gets specific when you need to know what characters get what buffs.
I've also seen "Elves gain +x/+x." Does this include both night elves and blood elves? For as much explaining as Blizz did to show off the game, there's so much that is left confusing.
Thanks for all the replies, y’all. This has been helpful, but I’m still shocked that this knowledge is ASSUMED by Blizz. Especially since they have historically said that they don’t like to nerf by changing card text because it would confuse players. This seems much more confusing to me, but maybe I should have pre-gamed with a few dozen hours of WoW…

It does seem like a bizarre oversight, given how much time Mercenaries apparently spent in development and how much prominence they gave the launch.
I was never really a WoW player and I think Hearthstone has always done a good job at being accessible to people who don't know (and don't care to learn) about the genealogy and curriculum vitae of the VanCleef family, or what have you.
I sometimes think "I wonder why that character says that" when I hear a legendary voice line (who are these lapdogs that Edwin's so upset with?) but that's about the extent of it.
The only comparable example I can think of from Hearthstone was that one generated by Elite Tauren Chieftan that said "Summon a Random Horde Warrior. I figured they'd moved away from that sort of design because it required knowledge of WoW to interpret.
As far as I can tell you can't even search your collection for "Horde" and "Alliance," which seems like an even bigger oversight. The deck manager for regular Hearthstone is pretty good for that kind of thing these days.
Imagine if you're completely new to the IP and you're expected to know which type of elf goes where.
I'm guessing it'll be changed soon.
You know, it never really occurred to me that anyone playing Hearthstone would come from a background of zero knowledge of the lore ahead of time. I mean, "fresh-start-never-even-seen-an-orc-before-why-is-that-one-dude-so-short" green to the universe.
For me it was my love of Warcraft lore that got me into this game and keeps me here.
It would be interesting to know just how many current HS players started from scratch - like, just saw the game in the mobile store and thought... hey, that looks neat.
Looking at it from that perspective, they definitely should add some tooltips or something to help players understand the difference, since it actually matters for gameplay.
We have a limited number of keywords in constructed because they want to make the game simple and easy to understand for new players... so... yeah. Should cover all their bases, then, eh?

Yeah, I think they were hoping more people with no Warcraft knowledge would start playing when they dropped the "Heroes of Warcraft" subtitle from Hearthstone. I myself had played Warcraft 3 years ago, but never did the campaign, just PvP. Some of the Alliance vs Horde stuff is kind of intuitive (humans vs orcs), but there's also a ton of gray areas.
Kind of off topic of Alliance vs Horde but on topic for Blizz communication oversight: apparently demons are immune to shadow damage but not fel damage. Good to know after my Tamsin was doing no damage to the final boss in Felwood. Luckily my Jaraxxas was tanking the massive damage they were dishing out and the fight was easy after that. Tamsin constantly summoning taunt and Jaraxxas never taking shadow damage from the enemies.
These are core gameplay mechanics. You shouldn't have to discover them on a forum. This buggy mode isn't what people want. People want the mini set so they can be excited for the year end expansion!

To add to this and also a little off topic, but what is the "speed" of an ability and where do you find what it is???

That was just a special mechanic of that boss fight. The boss has it in their ability description.

I had no idea. I just click Play and start the fight. When I noticed it not affecting them, I hovered over the enemies expecting some text saying "Immune to Shadow Damage."

It does say that. Also the effect includes YOUR demons, and they LOVE spamming shadow damage in that fight. I literally won it with just Mannoroth soaking them non-stop spamming that shadow damage ability.

I got into Hearthstone because a friend who was trying to get me into Magic the Gathering thought it would be a nice middleground with less of an entrance fee. Now 6 years later I'm supposed to know different factions just to buff certain characters in a completely unrelated yet still related game type.

https://wowwiki-archive.fandom.com/wiki/Race
If you scroll down there is a little chart that separates them by faction.
I haven't played enough of Mercs yet to see what races are used, but this should be helpful for you.
Generally:
Human, Dwarf, Gnome, Night Elf, Dranaei = Alliance
Orc, Troll, Tauren, Undead, Blood Elf = Horde
But some heroes like Milhouse and Illidan don't count.
Guldan is an orc but he's not Horde. Millhouse is a gnome but he's not Alliance. Although, I think I saw Arthas fall under the Alliance banner buff when he's not Alliance but he is human. you sure? I'm pretty sure that my Millhouse got buffed by an Alliance banner
¨Pretty sure Millhouse didn't get buffed by my Alliance banner.
huh, now I'm losing my confidence :D
I will check this and write again

I highlighted the speed icons in Red in the pic below. :)
This is in the Collection manager but you can see them while playing too.
