I played all yesterday and tbh its not for me. I play hearthstone for standard and I'm okay with that. This mode is not much fun and feels very repetitive and boring.
Played for a few hours. I think it's a hot mess with a terribly designed UI and a mind-numbingly boring gameplay. The whole game mode is basically math puzzle simulator, and it doesn't change ever, it's like a way worse version of the adventures they released in the past. I kept playing for a little bit to give it a fair chance, but the dreadful design (hovering over thing with 90% empty ui space, the terrible way of upgrading stuff b clicking each hero separately, etc, etc.) made me quit.
Sigh. I haven't even downloaded the patch yet and already I'm sad for this mode.
Sounds like the game is just too vanilla. Everything is samey. I was worried about this. Just feels like it is one of those games that just tries to get you on a treadmill and keep you clicking to get a little bit more of what you had before.
Sad. I would do Hearthstone PVE SO very different. Actually using.... wait for it.... Hearthstone cards.
Then again, my PVE would probably end up so complex that folks would stay away in droves. I don't think most are looking for depth. Just some quick sound and fury then scoop and play again.
My impression is that this mode was created to be something that you can just turn on and play when you are want to mindlessly do something that doesn't require too much thinking. I played it a bit, it felt simple but pretty decent.
I absolutely love it, it’ll probably be my main mode as long as it keeps getting new content. I know devs mentioned they plan to add new stuff every patch, like BGs, so that’s promising.
Grinded through a bunch of pve and really enjoyed the minute to minute gameplay. Board not super visually interesting but strategically there’s a lot going on. Pvp I haven’t gone too much into except for the daily chest, but I doubt that will be my focus.
As far as P2W fears, it’s incredibly generous. Just 900 gold for a fully upgraded village, so cheaper than BGs even. With one preorder bundle and the packs you get for free, I have 44/51 mercs. I imagine it will be pretty easy for everyone to get a full merc collection fast, after that you are just grinding for the upgrades. Seems to be a matter of finding a mission that gives the coins you want and then just going in on it.
Plenty of content here if people really like progression, leveling up and putting together different comps. Made a dragon/fire comp that was okay, and a pure demon comp that is very strong.
Leveling up the mercenaries, collecting coins and completing tasks feels rewarding... but the game is not fun to play IMO. Every battle quickly starts to feel the same. It's definitely a mode that is designed for making people addicted to that hit of dopamine you get for completing small tasks etc.
I usually LOVE PvE content. I have spent hours playing Dungeon Run, Rumble Run, Dalaran Heist and Tombs of Terror. I really liked playing though the Books of... as well. But this? It's not for me. Probably because it's not a card game.
I still don't understand why Blizzard have turned Hearthstone into a platform for mobile games rather than just making an entirely new game. It feels so clunky - the fact that there are two shops (both of which sells mercenaries pack, but only one who sells Hearthstone packs), different places for daily tasks/quests, and that you're opening coins in packs, which doesn't really make any sense... I think they could have made a better game by making it entirely its own thing.

Look, to each their own so while I disagree with the gameplay and visuals, you’re just flat out wrong on saying it is cheaper than battlegrounds. This mode is designed to be a money sink with obtuse resources compared to dust. Battlegrounds is literally free, and the optional battlepass might be more expensive than leveling up your camp, but it will be much cheaper than opening endless packs for random coins that might be for the mercenary you want. If you enjoy it, good. If you think you got your money worth for the preorders, good. But you’re wrong thinking this will not be an expensive mode.

I do think the randomization (via treasures) is so toned down relative to the previous solo modes that it just doesn't offer the same level of excitement. Dungeon runs & monster hunt rewards gave you crazy unique effects that were rarely present in standard hearthstone. The treasures that I've come across so far here tend to be more passive-feeling and ordinary.
So I suppose the chess enthusiasts got something a little closer to what they wanted: less RNG, more consistency across battles & play-throughs But I'm guessing Blizzard is going to find that those people make up a pretty small subset of the Hearthstone player base. Most of us are just big dumb animals who love big numbers and wild balance swings.

I'm in this quote and I don't like it.
Puzzle Box of Yogg-Saron will always be my favourite spell and I think it just comes down to the fact that it's interesting because "anything can happen."
Doesn't usually make for a fun experience for both players... depending on the results. And forget about being competitive.
But I'm not here to be competitive, I'm here to have fun.
And that's why I think I'll try out Mercs a little more but ultimately won't play much more than that.
They really f'ed up with the gold requirements. They added yet another gold sink but still no new ways to generate gold. If they wanted to gate features behind currency they should have created a new one. The way they did it makes it so f2p have choose between hearthstone and the new mode.
People were defending new game modes in HS by saying its just like having a little hub with different games in it. The dfference is , if I play an actual different game I get seperate currency incomes depending on the time you spend playing, here theres a limit to how much you can recieve, however the ways to spend keep increasing with each game mode.
I paid a preorder. How the fuck does that not include all the features of the mode ?!
If this doesnt get fixed this is just another mode im going to permanently ignore like duels.
If you just view it as mindless pve content then it's passable, though while there is plenty of boring pve content, it ain't all that. Like the duel like pve content was fantastic even though duels is actually terrible, it's a case where adding pvp didn't improve the mode. If they just made a pve version of battlegrounds I am sure plenty of people would like it, with no timer and the ability to quit in the middle of a run and go back to where you left off. And yes they will probably have to give the ai some sort of edge/make battlegrounds a bit different in that case to make up for bad ai.
I don't know how many different modes they have planned, if we'll eventually have a hundred of them, but mercs should have maybe been mini tested to the public as not a MAIN MODE, because it's built up to a point that is underserving for what it is. As I said before I think with the right updates this COULD be a lot better, but there's no guarantee they will do that. You can only review it based on what it is now.
Has anybody seen issues with Mercenaries progress not syncing between devices? I have been playing on my IPhone. Have progressed to the final bounty in the Barrens, and then when I log in with my IPad I’m still two bounties behind. Furthermore, many of my mercs were missing XP and upgrades from previous sessions I played on the phone. Anybody else seeing this?
I went into this thinking I could make some undead synergi party - turns out there are only 2 undeads - got sad. But other than that, I had alot of fun with my party of one tank, 2 green dudes and 3 casters. Think I will aim for either murloc or demon synergi moving forward, but I really hope they release more undead in the future.
It's alright. Not fun, but not bad. It's not a bad game mode. I just dislike that I have to collect coins to craft a hero that I can't open in packs. I dislike that I get packs with nothing but coins in them instead of a mercenary. I get the gameplay, it's easy enough to understand, I just wish it wasn't so boring to play.
I imagine they'll be releasing more mercenaries soon because they have synergies there, but not enough mercs to go through with said synergies. Such as murlocs, or undeads, or orcs, or dragons. The synergy is there, there just isn't enough to play around with.
Also, why do I have to pay gold to unlock PvP mode? Why do I have to pay ANY gold to unlock ANY additional mode?

Alright Activision Bot, with your one post here.
So glad you’re enjoying it! The rest of us are just bored, confused and pissed off.
This is what standard was all about this year? Getting us ‘prepped’ for this?
It’s like a tavern brawl that I’d pass on for a free pack. The team that came up with this need sacking,
I have more exciting games on my steam account that I’ve yet to play.
I found it the most boring game i ever played, i now understand people who don't enjoy Battlegrounds. Won't do this again ever

Not ever touching this gamemode again.

Galavant Animation
It's better than nowadays standard

It would probably be a lot more fun if I COULD GET OUT OF THE FCKING TUTORIAL
Not bad so far. Do you have to pay for access to pvp though or am I blind?

IDK if I missed something but I'm very disappointed of the pvp part.
I thought there would be a map of some sort and I would be playing against gradually stronger players:
like match 1 my opponent would have 0 wins
match 2 1 win
match 3 2 wins etc, until I get my "final boss"
instead it's just a shitty one on one and that's it
I like the gameplay, I think they did good.
