I have a very annoying finish first in battlegrounds quest. I've tried about 4 times. I seem to do good in the early game, but it never fails that by the end I'm getting my butt handed to me by far better players.
I'm not a battlegrounds player. Don't really like the game much. But, I'd like to complete the quest. Is there some sort of reasonable path to a top deck. I guess I need something that is super strong late game that I can limp through the early game with.
Brann and Murlocs. George and Murlocs. Big Wrathweaver with demons.
You are probably in low MMR, so other things can also work, but those should carry you pretty much to the top. You can concede reroll heroes until you get those as well if you don't care and just want to complete the quest.
Another tipp: when you are going for Nagas and you get the one which gains +1/+1 for each spell you cast, you don‘t need to just play the „naga spells“. What will work too are coins, blood gems,… just spells in general. Hope this might help. And Nagas are really strong in general, when you can build that tier 2 2/5 up. (Sorry idk the english names for those cards)
As others say, conceding 7-8 in a row is the fastest way to get a weak lobby. You just need to highroll a quest, for example i always steamroll with the one that gives every minion i buy +1/+1 (and increasing with each buy). In the late game stats alone do not matter as much. If you play murlocs for example, try to get 4 of them have high health and poison, then complete thw build with baron rivendare and the deathrattle that gives your minions divine shield. Shields are generally really good late game. If your opponent has a huge taunt cleaning your board, leeroy is great. If they have shields and you don't, find the deathrattle aoe minion. If you constantly lose late games it is because you tunnel vision on getting triples instead of looking more long term at how to make your late game insane.

Good point on the tunnel vision: sometimes getting a triple makes you weaker as divine shields and poisons don't stack and combining two big minions into a super minion makes it easier to be sniped by Leeroy or poison. That's especially hurtful for taunts and you only need your stats to be slightly higher than your opponent to get better trades and win.
Trade Prince Gallywix in an Elementals lobby will also allow you to make some pretty big minions in the late game. Combine it with the Evil Twin or Devil in the Details quest.
Lady Vash with her permanent spellcraft buffs also allow you to make crazy big minions. You don't even need Naga to make a strong build.
I also like Jandice in a Murlocs lobby, since it's easy to keep the Murlocs that buff other Murlocs when played in rotation with her hero power.
dude I am so pissed at this fckin quest omg... been conceding 5 games in a row, getting placed in lobbies with 3 people conceding instantly and getting 2nd place for 3 fricking days straight....
not only that, but I placed in a lobby where 6 people conceded immediately, and I got left with 1 other player in the lobby. he concedes as well the very next turn and I got 1st place finally.
and guess what... the game does not count that towards quest progress... goddamn never been this much pissed in this game

They are next level, they artificially boost everyone else's MMR in order to be placed in the worst lobby in the game.
Just ditch the quest chain. No point in getting the reward if you dont like Battlegrounds..
I don't understand how this isn't the only piece of advice people are giving. Seems obvious. Like reading some comments on this site are gonna make him capable of a first place finish. Just reroll.
I suppose the time is out now anyway... I felt like there was some curse over me, since I've never had so many games without getting nr. 1 at least once. Ditching the quests seemed like the path for you, since you don't play the mode anyway, but I guess there is some sportsmanship to unlocking every skin possible.
If you want a bonkers run, play demons and buff the shit out of that lobby with the tier 3 4/4 demon. There are multiple quests that support such builds and they easily scale like crazy. Otherwise, go for a Tarecgosa + prized protodrake (dragons) build.

Because there isn't anything to reroll. It is a separate slot and has no replacement.
And yes, there are ways to optimise the approach (like what heroes to look for) and gameplay, but yes, if there is no interest in BGs doing the quest seems somewhat pointless (although I get the collection aspect).

One of those then, my mistake.

Any advice for a novice?

Just concede some games in a row till ur handed an easy lobby.
I've just dropped this quest chain altogether. No chance I would use rewards anyway.

Watch streamers like RDU. Btw if you do not play battlegrounds, the reward is not worth the effort.

The amount of times of becoming second is so very frustrating at this quest. Spent at least 3 days going on and on in lobbies

Unfortunately there is no reliable way to do well in battlegrounds unless you play it enuf and get good.

Whats the point in them re-rolling if they dont enjoy the game mode?
