When people got a full board like 3-4 turns in, I'm still at like 2-4 minions. Not really sure what I'm doing wrong.
My tactic is usually to buy ont minion of the tribe I want, then if thre is another one of the same tribe on turn 2 I buy it, if not I upgrade. Then I refresh for minions of my tribe, or at least some strong neutral tribeless minions. Maybe a taunt like the Acolyte of C'thun.
How do you usually play Battlegrounds' early game? Do people, rather than scroll and only buy one minion for your tribe, just buy two minions regardless of if it's the tribe you want or not?
I just had a game where I lost five turns in a row just because I was behind all the time.
Don't worry about tribes early. Always upgrade on turn 2 (with some exceptions for certain heroes). Avoid rolling as much as possible until tavern tier 4.
I consider myself a very average Battlegrounds player, expert players will probably be more helpful but I would say:
- Don't focus too much on the tribe on the first levels, what you're looking for is stats and value. - Some cards have good synergy, offer good support though not from the same tribe - In most cases, try to buy a token on your first turn, upgrade to level 2 on your turn 2 and sell a token to buy 2 good stats/synergy minions on your turn 3. Then, on turn 4, you can buy 2 more minions while still on level 2. With that strategy, you shouldn't be behind.
How you play the early turns really depends a lot on your hero, but some general guidelines are: - Tier 1 minions are good because they offer good economy (all the token generators) or avenge activation (the reborn ones) - Tier 2 minions are generally pretty meh and therefore the most common strategies are to either stay on tier 1 for multiple turns and then double level to tier 3 on 7 gold, or otherwise go quickly to tier 3. - The main goal should be to get your hands on a buildaround minion as early as possible (Tarecgosa, Lightspawn, Doomsayer, etc...), these are mostly on tier 4 or higher therefore it's a great idea to find an early triple and hold it in hand or freeze it in the shop until you are at tier 3. - The easiest way to get a triple is to stay on tier 1 as the pool of minions is much more limited
For sure turns 1 & 2 are way too early to focus on a specific tribe...
I suggest checking out Dogdog and ItsBen321 for incredibly informational and relaxed content. As for your question, early game you want to focus on "premiums". Just pick up the best stats you can get for your coin rather than shoehorning yourself into certain tribes. If you notice that your premiums are Murlocs, then you can lean into picking more of them up, but don't specifically only roll for them cause your wasting more money on rolling than doing strong stuff
It depends, the strategies used to be fairly simple before, now it's fairly all over the place on what's best, very hero dependent and available class based. But with avenge so powerful, it's fairly common to try to get the tier 1 token generators and try to triple into lightspawn for the easy win, though any avenge card can be fairly powerful with that setup.
Generally speaking you do what will gets you to big stats the quickest. Like with Ysera you used to play a bit slow, now it's rush to tier 3 and hope you get the top tier dragons.
With quite a few of the other heroes you don't level on turn 2, and staying on level 1 until leveling costs 1, or even 0 can be very common. Then tripling for a early fast start. Usually only leveling because you are offered bad minions.
Generally speaking menagerie is something you can go for, but it would start from turn 1, usually ending up at the end with at least 2 of the early minions you first got. And you need a hero that buffs them along the way too.
There's no straight forward answer other than you have to understand what people are doing to get more powerful than you, generally speaking the most powerful early boards got really lucky with their triples. And small moves that make you only slightly more powerful will often lead to other people out scaling you.
I made the same mistakes frequently, but nowadays I play way better and focus more or less only on stats and some obvious synergies if they appear for the first rounds. Usually tier 4 is where builds can take off (with some exceptions), so I wait until then to decide.
Forget 'comps' exist until you're tripling to a good direction. Having a Frog doesn't mean you go beasts.
Hell, I had sheer tempo boards on Patches, that had 2-3 pirates just to get to that tier 4 and triple or go to 5 and get Hoggarr or Tony... and I won games transitioning out of pirates because they couldn't beat murlocs.
Early on you don't lose a lot of health, and levelling up early can restore tempo easily because the 3s and 4s are currenrly the better tempo, while you're levelling to 5 to triple into a 6, and a lot of times (especially with murlocs and elementals) there's no real reason to tier 4.
Also, I'll echo Oireal and suggest you check itsben321 and search his vod on transitions to learn it. Also search YT generally for transition games, so you can see how for examplr demon 'comps' become dragons, even though they have a very good demon board.
P.S. until the patch at least, try forgetting tier 2 exists, check Jeef, Rafaam, and Warrior curves, and try applying them. Tier 4 is your daddy with like 80% of the heroes, learn to get there and build your comp from there.
