Finally completed every BG Achievement today (2 are left that you can't complete right now as the heroes are not active).
My last was my Spicy Pretzel Mustard...Most of my achievements were completed between 8500 and 9500 however, to get BRB and Salty Pretzel Mustard I dropped much lower to around 5500.
There were about 5 (Deryl, Illidan, Pyramid, Lich, and Rat King) heroes that were very tough to get first place with. A couple of general tips for some of the hard to finish hero's in first place:
*Sometimes you have to just almost ignore the hero power and try and top roll...mostly with Dragons/ Beasts/ Elementals. I know this sounds counter productive but with Deryl for example he is great at getting top 4, but when shooting for that #1 spot you can't sit at T4 and roll up on mechs and other divine shield minions like usual. You have to shoot for those top tier game finishers.
*If you can set your self up to stay on curve...leveling turns 2, 5, 7 and 9 is great but...if you can level back to back turn 7 and 8 and drop a triple for a T5 minion (Nomi, Mamabear, or Lightfang) that can win with any hero. If you can hit that, going 2, 5, 7, 9, 10 and hitting a triple for a Malygos that is your next best option.
*Playing for first place is much different then playing to finish top 4. Your risks are generally greater (see note above on when to level) earlier when going for that number 1 spot.
*Taking best option on the board until you can work into that win condition is important. When you lose a round, getting hit for 5-7 HP is way easier to manage then those killer 18-20 shots.
If you have specific questions or are looking for tips on a specific hero, I am all in to help...no pro here, just a casual gamer dude that thought this was a fun goal to accomplish.
One of your points is one that gives me the most troubles - not really hero specific - but just in general :
*Taking best option on the board until you can work into that win condition is important. When you lose a round, getting hit for 5-7 HP is way easier to manage then those killer 18-20 shots.*
Whilst acknowledging that all games are different, and much depends on the hero you're playing as well as what Bob offers, i find that in the early rounds - and pretty much until i get to Tier 4, i try and focus on the best units available, and keeping my HP as high as possible, without committing to a certain build.
But then, once i look to move to a certain build, i find myself panicking if i dont get the types of minion needed - and often default to a Menagerie type board, in the hope i can find an early Lightfang and scale that way - on the basis that usually you get can a decent class minion type per roll - and one or two per round.
Sometimes it works - but often i end up falling behind after a strong start.
What would be your advice with this? As said, i know alot depends on many variables that cant all be represented on here, but i feel like that unless i really high roll, i get caught between a rock and a hard place and end up not getting the results i could do with a better strategy.
Im a circa 7k player - which may also be part of the problem and explain a few things!! :)

Nice post, and congrats on the achievement.

My magic will tear you......oh.
Congrats, fellow player. I am having a really hard time as Illidan right now. Deathwing, AFK and Alextrasza too, but I think I can manage it soon.
