well it’s all about your match up against the other one, look what he plays, what you can do against his compo and what you he can do about yours, then adapt if he has divine shields or a cleaver or else, be extra careful about you placement, sometime there will be nothing you can do about or just not enough time but that should raise your odds of winning, then it will come with experience, just play and watch streamers or youtubers that helps a lot
1st place in 16 % of your games and 2nd in even more seems like a pretty good balance to me - especially if you are a casual player. But perhaps I am just a noob.
If you want to get 1st you will have to take risks and play comps like Dragons and Murlocs, both are 1st or 8th comps. When you get strong OP heroes like Hooktusk or Eudora try to go for Murlocs and Dragons.
I currently reached 58 times first place out of 263 top 4 positions. I don't know how many games I played in total though... I also don't know if this stat is good or bad but 22% of all top 4 finished ending as first is good I think.
I mostly reached first place by playing Beasts, Pirates and Murlocs. With dragons I don't have much success. Beasts have been nerfed hard now, so no reason to try that anymore. That leaves us with Pirates and Murlocs as best chance.
One thing is for sure though. A bad decision early game can kill your chance at getting first for sure. Watch other streamers to tweak the little things in your gameplay and you might get better results fast.

Great art can never be created without great suffering.
