With the addition of Sauralisk I'm finding there's almost always one person in each lobby (usually a Pyramad) living on tavern tier 1 for the whole game, and it's an obnoxious strategy that really sucks the fun of the lobby and breaks the mode a bit.
* The strategy is the most consistent one in the game, you can always commit hard to it and it'll never not take off. You always win the early-mid game because you don't have to spend gold tiering up, letting you build stats that eclipse everyone else.
* When you hit someone, you hit them for laughable damage, so everyone can tier up for free that round against the tier 1 player since you won't win against them anyway. The point of the tier 1 player is never to win the game, the point is just to survive and reap 2-4th place points, because it'll always lose to late game builds. It almost feels like the tier 1 player is just trolling the game as they never intend to actually get first place.
* There's no decision making or adaptive thinking involved, it's always the same gameplan.
It's definitely not the path to first place, but it is absolutely easy to pull off and is a pretty easy top 4 path. Often you'll end up 2nd. Now, I wouldn't go so far as to say it's unhealthy, it's actually nice that there's this additional option. But yes, it is becoming very common now.
What does it matter? if you face them while they are strong and lose you take 3-4 damage, you can treat the fight similar to how you would facing a dead player, as in greedy level up or holding things in hand for extra gold next turn.
Wrath Weaver on it's own wasn't an issue, since there were only two minions you could use to grow it, and one of them has a really hefty drawback. Rabid Saurolisk scales off of 3 minions, and the 3/1 statline has a reasonable chance to not take damage on Round 1, unlike Wrath Weaver. Not a tonne of damage prevented, but with WW being a health-as-a-resource demon build, losing that 2 damage means less scaling and a significantly higher chance of early death.
Beast early game is so totally wrong. There's essentially three of the same minion (Kindly Grandmother, Infested Wolf {it's also bad that this is the only tier 3 Beast}, Rat Pack) within two tiers, and only one of them is any good. Scavenging Hyena is too inconsistent, too vulnerable to snipes. The entirety of Tiers 1-3 for Beasts need a rework. Cat's fine, but everything else needs a second look.

If Rabid Saurolisk got stats adjusted, moved to Tier 2, beasts shuffled around a bit more, I don't see a problem with that. At tier 1... I think it's just too consistent.

The fact that there is a guaranteed way to get points without any effort with a strategy that you know won't give you a chance at winning, matters. If I see a Pyramad pick I'll just do it every time because it's free points. Did it today - 10 win streak until 3 players were left then got absolutely wrecked by Mackerel endgame builds, but I still got my 50 points.
tier 1 player is just trolling the game as they never intend to actually get first place.
Nothing wrong with that as long as you get points for places 2-4. It would be trolling if you never (or very rarely) reach the places with positive points.
I don't think I have ever seen a first place going solely for this. Even Deryl. Maybe, just maybe, it may be considered a strategy to consistently finish top 4, but rather on the 4th place - not sure, I would need to test it and have a considerable sample size to see if it works consistently. But for sure it's not a path to easy wins, therefore there's nothing wrong with such playstyle.

Generally speaking you either need to get super lucky getting Sauralisk, which isn't terribly likely since it is a good card other people will pick, otherwise you need Wrath Weaver or maybe a super early triple into Hangry Dragon. And of course, getting shield mcgee a lot of times.
Having said that, that will only lead to more consistent 2nd places. Getting first I think is dependant on you getting SUPER lucky with your final opponent(ie. falling into a super weak room). Because you are dependant on other opponents killing people, you aren't going to take out your biggest late game threats yourself.
And from my experience you can do the strat with pretty much any class, yeah some classes are better to do it with. And certain classes you would rather be doing other things, yadda yadda, but it's not strictly a strat that only select classes can pull off.
I don't mind having a safe strategy for when you get a lousy batch of heroes to pick from. If you're sitting there looking at Lich King as your best option, it's hard to get excited about playing a balanced game or rushing to higher tiers for a 1st place comp. Having that safer, fallback plan to avoid a huge MMR setback is kind of nice.

Another factor is how 'fast' the game is. By that I mean how quickly the various players get eliminated. In a game where many matches in various rounds end in a tie and so on, you might end up in round 12-13 before you make it to top4 and by that time there will for sure be some stronger builds that outclass you. Now imagine though a 'fast' game where for example someone picks an early tier6 minion off Shifter Zerus and proceeds to crush everyone while giving them double digit damage each round. It is quite likely that it will be him vs the Sauralisk build as early as round 10 perhaps, at which stage the Sauralisk build is very likely to still be ahead.
Just tried the 1* strategy. Finished 2nd and even managed to win from 1st place a couple times, but then got stomped on.
I mean do points mean anything? Who cares that you get +50 every time. This is the moest boring strategy ever. I rather go full Demons in the hopes that this is the time it finally works, than this safe crap.
Was fun having 3 gold Sauralisk and 1 gold Wrath Weaver to buff to 40-50 something tho.
Just wanted to update this: everyone having fun against Sauralisk hooktusk being untouchable until turn 12+? Yes, hooktusk is a broken hero, but it just goes to show how dumb this strategy is. Win flawlessly for 10 turns, then start levelling up and do your damage that way.
Might be intentional from Blizzard... Last "season" they had the pogo hopper sitting at T2 strat, and with each update "actual" HS becomes more and more aggro, so I would not be surprised if this was their intention.

Totally aggree. Strat sucks so hard, and you see it every game.....
Thx to that we see Murlocs winning again more frequently too.
And sometimes it even wins....... as much as i hate it after some bad runs i just enjoy the free Points too. But i have to agree, its just retarded at some Point....
It's way more common than some people realize. It's 1-3 players per game. I'm ok with it because it's a legal and legitimate strategy for points. People have different definitions of fun. And any missing with the points rewarded for places 2-4 would have unintended consequences.

It does seem a bit excessive.

But it's not just Pyramad. This strategy works just as well with Edwin and Millhouse so expect to see a lot of it in general...

since this post, I've seen 1 people in every lobby use this strategy lol

It's very consistent and top 4 it's pretty much guaranteed.
I find Reno to be the best, early golden sauralisk it's getting huge pretty fast
