I don't think Mackerel needed to be removed anymore, this new meta is even more high-roll than mackerel divine builds ever were
I've found that it's harder to go the murloc build but majrgablll or whatever his name is has the easiest time getting there. But having the additional pirates (and there are a LOT of them) causes all the other builds to be diluted somewhat. I seldomly run into beast builds. It's mostly just pirates but that's to be expected since it's new. But I don't want pirates to be causing other builds becoming impossible because they are so many of them every time you roll.
Murlocs are a trap, except when they’re not. They are high roll incarnate. People complain when someone makes them work. Because when they work, it is the best build in BGs.
What people NEVER post about is the “losers” who get 8th and 7th place, and did so chasing the murloc dream. This scenario occurs FAR more often. More people have lost rating chasing Alice than gained rating finding the tea party. Murlocs are heinously weak before tier 5 unless you triple a seer. Furthermore, you must also speed run to 5 in hopes of having a chance. Then hope to find bran. Then hope to triple. Then hope to see mega in that triple.
It’s doable, and when done so is virtually unbeatable, but don’t act like the road there is anything but yellow brick.
So the updated BG is pretty fun. And Bran doesn't seem to be as big an issue anymore (he is literally only good with Murlocs). However, I've found that Murlocs still suck all the fun out of the game. There will always be at least one murloc player and since pretty much everyone else plays either beasts or pirates (mechs suck now, for some reason) they pretty much always get there. That in itself is fine, I guess. But poison really really sucks. It makes building a good board pretty pointless. The games i've had the most fun were the ones where there were NO murlocs at all (i love that there is that option). Maybe what they are doing is just seeing how things play out and just eventually remove them entirely. That'd be the day....but ya, poison murlocs take all the fun away.
Mechs have hard time since arcane cannon cleans up their weak deathrattle tokens and divine shields early and for late game you don't want to fill your board with 1/1 microbots when pirates & parrots get +8/+8 every time they attack.
I'd be okay with Scalelord replacing Megasaur. Megasaur feels unfun to use and play against due to its inconsistency - I've had games where I've needed 3 Brann+Megasaurs to finally land divine shield. With Scalelord, you'd get consistency and remove the extra power of another Megasaur roll on top, and it'd also make Toxfin relevant to the game instead of applying 5 poison buffs at once.
I think it's fair to criticize that Divine Shield + Poison from Megasaur, and the additional bonus of Tokens or Windfury, is too much of a power spike potential in one card. But without it, the tribe becomes even less viable than it already is. In other words, it would need some sort of alternative. Maybe replace Megasaur with Scalelord, so that the poison part requires you to buy multiple Toxfins. or something like that. It feels bad to lose to an invincible board, but Murlocs are still a very risky strategy that oftentimes won't work out, and managing to pull it off should come with something special.
I personally think it's more important to buff beasts than to change murlocs. Winning with a beast build is almost as difficult and unlikely as winning with murlocs, but even the best possible beast builds can get outstatted, without poison or divine shield at their disposal (aside from Maexxna). And buffing another tribe would hurt murlocs as well, because they usually need quite a few turns to grow.
I wonder if I am the only one thinking murlocs suck. Probably because they never work for me (even if I finally get to Megasaur, it doesn't give me bubbles or poison) and because I much more often lose to Dragons or Mechs than to Murlocs.
Murlocs do suck in most cases. For every time, that a player manages to get a strong murloc build going, you have a dozen players dropping out somewhere between 8th and 5th place, who tried to get there. For murlocs, you need to get to level 5 fast (and ideally level with a triple), you need very good rolls, and matchups that don't kill you as you get there. It's just unlikely to happen, but when it happens, it's glorious.
True, but I actually like beasts as an alternative that allows top 2. they can be quite a quick pivot with the new macaw builds without being so overpowered that there's no counter play.
So. Just had a few games with the updates and...Murlocs still are the best class by far. Almost no weakness whatsoever. I don't understand how some players say "they are weak midgame". That is simply untrue.
Anyways, the last game I played I finished top 3. All 3 of us were...on murlocs. The game lasted a bit too long but the whole point ended up being about who hit DS first (I got 3 megasaurs, with bran and never hit the DS option so...I lost). The new 6 drop Megamalgam is cool and at least gives other classes the ability to have a minion with DS/Poison. But it's also...a murloc.
Anyways, it is what it is but I've come to the conclusion that if murlocs are active in your pool, there's very little point in trying to be any other class. Because you will lose to murlocs.

Need to be removed from this game

As much as Mackerel made murlocs better, the removal of Mackerel removed one of murloc's counters... which in turn made murlocs better.
While that may sound confusing really they are better now because they are easier to pull off now than the pre-dragon patch pre-Mackerel era.
