Why would Blizzard do something like double if not triple their server costs for a timeframe that barely covers 1% of their uptime ? That is simply not sane nor realistic.
Because angry 12 year olds don't understand infrastructure.
Someone said that 600$ a year from one person doesn't begin to put a dent in the cost of blizzard servers. He is probably correct, and if there were only 1 person in the entire world playing their games, that would mean something.
Look Blizzard is PRINTING money with Hearthstone, it's not a huge secret they make loads of money with just that 1 title. Take that and you figure they're making a pretty hefty sum off of Heroes of the Storm, and they still have WoW subs (5 million) that will buy every new expansion (2-3 a year) at 40$ per expansion. They have money enough to have MORE top of the line servers allowing the load to be spread across more servers, and insuring more stability. Like someone said they keep costs as low as possible to keep profit higher. As a business practice it's sound, but when you're dealing with such a big audience with your business like Blizzard is. Customer satisfaction needs to be valued more then what you spend on servers in a year.
I really find it funny how someone can actually go ahead and say "yeah, there'll be problems cuz launch = massive DDOS, live with it".
I wonder if an engineer can say "yeah well but the winds were pretty damn strong that day, so the building was bound to crash down" .
Guess what? There is more than one way of fixing problems, especially preemptively. And if a problem is VERY VERY hard to solve, it doesn't mean that we shouldn't still be looking for solutions. And if we still can't solve it, an apology to the ones getting screwed is in order.
How fucking hard can that be?
What we get instead is blizzard crapping all over, all the time. Hell, they can't even release a product when they intended to. "Sorry guys, see this that you already paid for? Yeah, we'll be taking it back now... Oh, but please, by all means, get a refund if you want.". F*** you, I want you to pay attention to what you're doing. "Oh look, we had a problem with our newest tavern brawl, let's just release this one NO ONE likes for the THIRD TIME instead.". "So the latest rage is about MC and secret paladin, well f*** me, let's get another paladin secret out there, for good measure.". "Rogue and shaman are crap right now? Good. Here, take Poisoned Blade.". Hell, have you seen the presentation for LOE? The guy who was presenting it made me want to shoot myself in the face. Such a terrible attitude. At least Ben Brode is a good showman, he makes you laugh even when you're looking at crappy cards being released (I realize there have to be crappy cards, ok? It just doesn't make them not crappy).
I can't believe we're talking economics today hahahaha.
If you ask me, I would put my money in a company that gives small to zero dividends. If I want out, I would just sell my shares, but I don't feel safe putting my money in the hands of people (the C-level of the company) who doesn't know what to do (where re-invest the profit) with it.
That being said, expect the servers to crash hard today (I also guess that LoE will be opening right after midnight in EU).
When the game is playable again, Reno Jackson and Djinni of Zephyrs will join my ranks, and I hope they will be fun to play with.
Did I say the IT is a stressful job? No (even though it is, but whatever).
WIth the average servers they have (which are already INSANE) they can not handle an insane amount of people. It is simply not possible. To handle tons of players your servers must be an insane, extreme expensive amount. Your silly money won't comprehend that costs, I just did a cost accounting for our few servers in my company, those prices are already insane.
And because you decide to give them money they should waste more money than that to have way more bigger and more expensive servers to comprehend a single peak every once in a while? Because guys like you can't wait one or two hours and stay calm for something like this? You are silly. Of course it's in the end a maximum profit "issue"...but lil' kid, that is how fucking business works, and only because of minor problems for some hours you would be fucking stupid to decrease your profit. Please, NEVER get in a management position if you don't get that shit together.
But that's humanity. The big part that is poor and dumb as hell always sees the leading environment as the evil while they have no clue of how life works. All they want is something for free, they want it fast, they only care 'bout themself. You idiot have the choice not to give them your money if you are unhappy, but hey, you will do it anyway. And you will cry again. And you still don't know how the IT works. Or anything else. Probably due to the land you come from, as the country is way behind.
You are probably someone crying over bugs, too. Once you programmed something bigger by yourself you will know why bugs happening at release. You can't handle every bug, you can not even test all possibilities where bugs could happen as the wierdest things change everything.
But whatever....more intelligence, less everything else, thx.
Dude,
You are a salty one arent you ?
I´m a IT infrastructure manager for a multi-billon dollar company with data center spread over 7 countrys on a 24x7 operation, server down MEANS a lot of revenew loss. so we work on the double to make our infrastructure withstand our customers needs,
Hearthstone was a small project in Blizzard that had grew above their wildest dreams, and today is a great cash cow for them, but they are being too greedy in my hosnest opnion and at most, trying to catch-up with their IT structure.
With the increase of player base they MUST INVEST IN IT infrastructure. not only to give a decent game experience to their current customers, but plan ahead the growth start purchasing equipment in advance to keep the new ones happy as well. It may costs hundreds of thounsands and even million to do so, but their revenew increase is bigger that that.
You ask for more intellingence, and hope you receive some, as for now, i only see lack of intelligence in you and your defensive positioning about IT expenditure and customer satisfaction.

I grew up paying 40 eur for a game and OWNING IT ALWAYS. And sometimes the game would grow without me spending more.. remember Neverwinter nights?
Well that's my problem with P2W games. Hearthstone the best game ever. Ruined only by P2W busines model. Once there's a good alternative that is not P2W I will abandon hearthstone without hesitation
You've never played a card game in your life, have you?
Do you make your customer base growth waves are on this peaks ? your revenew grows in simillar fashion on this peaks ? if the answers are yes than you should invest for sure. if not, you still should invest in the proportion of your revenew growth.
In case of blizzard, they have a different environment that a telecom company. They have at least 5 different franchises of games that demand infrastructre all year long. They can invest in VM Farms that can be reallocated on demand - it takes time and effort but with some planning and good project managers there it is completly feasible.
The comms structure needs to be upgraded as well, and as I said, with broad vision and planning the peaks of each franchise (WOW, HS, OW, DIII, etc) will use most of the "unused" band width of a stable franshise, would be emnployed on the ones in peak level ...

This is refreshing to hear. Thankyou.
This wg15 guy gives IT people a bad name and reinforces why everyone thinks computer nerds are socially inapt. Clearly it's his understanding of the business world that's really lacking. In business people only see (and care about things) in black and white. It either works or it doesn't. Despite all valid technical/economic reasons for why blizzard shouldn't give an arm and a leg for a few days of peak traffic (during major releases). The customers, financial guys, and CEO's will only ever see this all as an excuse. Yes in IT things go wrong which is out of the IT administrator's control - but in the end of the day, in business, someone always needs to be accountable, which puts IT persons in front of the firing squad basically.
I'm an IT/Network administrator for a software development company which distributes our applications digitally also. Sometimes factors outside of my control cause issues in distribution to the customers (our financial guys don't want to spend more money on our internet service), the budget is not there for sufficient hardware etc. Guess what? I get blamed for all this regardless if its my 'fault or not'. Why? Because in the business world someone needs to be accountable. I don't come on hearthpwn and be a complete @#$@ to somebody I don't know because I had a bad day at work. I take it like a man and do my best moving forward. This is the reason IT is a very stressful job and pays a lot.
The people working at blizzard have millions of dollars excess budget and are some of the best in the world at what they do. I myself, and the rest of this world should expect nothing but the best. Blizzard knows the expectations they need to live up to and this is exactly why it boggles my mind too that EVERY GAME THEY RELEASE has some kind of issue at launch. It's not just hearthstone, but diablo and StarCraft and WoW as well.
Should blizzard have excessive server power so during the 5-6 peak days a year everything is fine - but the rest of the year, much of the server power is simply idling? YES. Why? Because nothing but the best is expected of an industry leader. Even if profits are not maximized, the bigger picture is black and white (as everything is in business). It either works or it doesn't.
This lesson of accountability isn't just in IT either, its everywhere in the business world. Look at Volkswagen scandal, the CEO resigned. In politics, if there's a scandal, the head of that department, even if being unaware of the offence, usually is forced to resign anyways. It's called accountability and its not always fair. But guess what. Life isn't always fair. Something I'm teaching my 4 year old from a young age.
Fellow EU players, this is a thread of preemptive crying and speculation on the LoE launch today on our beloved EU server:
What will go wrong today?
I get started:
1. Blizzard obviously will launch the game at exactly 19.00 CEST, the very moment everybody is coming home from work, school, university and whatnot, resulting in the obvious server crah and numerous tweets with a surprised undertone: "Servers are getting hit pretty hard today [what kind of genius would have guessed that] we are very sorry for the inconvenience [no you are not, because otherwise you would have changed the situation a long time ago, and you don't even give us free packs for your undoings you greedy shits]"
As someone working in the IT I hate guys like you and you don't know how hard it is to handle it when masses try to join a server at the same time. Probably student, unemployed, no real life experience.
Why release at such clumsy time then? As someone working with IT we do our maintenance during NIGHTTIME so when our workers come to work they don't have to sit around like fools waiting for update or something.
Now you can substitute maintenance into release new content and workers into players.
Also why not launch it at the same time as adventure? Couple of hours before end of work for most of Europe, morning for NA, night for Asia. From EU point of view all the students and non-working lot will get in first satisfy themselves and when the rest of working population is back at home ready to try out new content servers won't be bursting like pretty much every other blizzard release before this.
customer perception and satisfaction is key here ... If you have to buy a service from a company how do you chose it ?
You evaluate cost only ? benneftis only ? or a cost/bennefit ratio ?
If the customer are getting more and more unsatisfied, and they know the service level is awfull, they will start to migrate to other providers, and this is what kill a Brand - is the public perception of how good or bad something is ...
Blizz has to take care of this or else it will not be only a delay i profit, but a real loss and a downward trend in customer base and revenew in the long run.
Telecom is a different maket with different players, Gaming is another beast, there is some post from a guy who is a game infrastructure desgner and he have a good insight on this industrie, and for what i could understand he shares my vision on how things can be done in a "budget" and still profit from it.
peace and lets spend some money with the expansion shall we, or they will never be able to invest in infrastructure :D

You should rename the thread to : who is better on the internetz
nah, to busy eating popcorn and watching the mess I created ... i do however think that there is a valid point in all the rage here. Blizzard are really handling (especially EU) releases poorly and deserve the flakk they are getting!

Vivendi states 472k shares for the US market, 5k for the EU market.
And they bought that mobile company.
Yet the earnings were 0,21 Cent per share from the QE call.
