I'm entering a local tournament for the first time later this month, and I'm just kinda wondering what goes into choosing decks for "amateur" tournaments. It's a standard conquest tournament where you submit 3 decks, and you can ban one of your opponent's decks.
Do I just pick my personal 3 best decks? This would probably mean secret mage, miracle rogue, and my zoolock. I'm just wondering if it's actually worth it to cut one (probably zoolock) to just bring something more proven, like even paladin or spiteful druid. I've experienced moderate success with each of those, because, let's be real, who hasn't had success with those =/.
I'm imagining that most opponents will bring cubelock, spiteful druid, and even or odd paladins, because those seem to be the top consistent decks. I know I can beat all of those with secret mage and miracle rogue. I'm just wondering about what do about my third deck haha.
I'm pretty excited to participate in this. Who knows, maybe I'll prove to myself that I really am a fraud of a legend player. Or maybe I'm the next big thing =P haha. Maybe, if I played 8+ hours a day. I just can't do that lol.

I remember watching a tournament (during K&K I think) one time where the winner had apparently countered the tournament meta where nobody brought midrange decks so he had brought either aggro or hypercontrol decks. His control decks outvalued the other control decks since he had cut the cards for midrange matchups which ended up winning him the tournament. I doubt you can do exactly that in the current meta with Spiteful Druid and Even Paladin but it might be possible in some different way to exploit gaps in the local meta by tweaking your deck to give them more favorable matchups against the decks you expect to see a lot of versus the other decks you would see on ladder.
I think I'm gonna take the tempo mage, miracle rogue, and then... I donno, toss up between even paladin and spiteful druid. Somehow, miracle rogue is my best deck haha. I guess rogue is my only gold hero by a long shot, so that probably contributes to that =P. Because of the banning, I'm guessing I'd play the mage and rogue in every match (assuming I make it past first round lol), which I'm mostly comfortable with.
I suppose I'd struggle against taunt druids... But then I could just ban druid in every match myself haha. I've still got time to think about it. It's the last weekend of May. Maybe I'll become pro with another deck by then =P

The tournament happens a few days after the nerfs haha, so that makes this a more interesting decision.
I think miracle rogue and burn mage are still very good options to bring. I am very confident in my miracle rogue, and some of its unfavorable matchups have been nerfed (even paladin and quest rogue, and it'll destroy cubelock even more now). Burn mage wasn't hit by nerfs at all, and a cubelock should have no hope of healing against it. It was tough to begin with. Also burn mage has a better chance against paladins now, with Call to Arms being increased.
For my third deck, I think I'm going to start working on taunt druid. I've got most of the pieces (except for the cubes). Now that cubes aren't quite so oppressive, maybe I'll finally cave and craft those bastards lol. I was thinking of taking spiteful priest, and I think it might still be a solid option.
I'm pretty excited about the nerfs, honestly, and I'm glad they're occuring before the tournament.

So the tournament happened this past weekend. I brought Odd rogue, big spell mage, and mind blast control priest. I know, I mentioned I'd probably use miracle rogue, burn mage, and taunt druid lol, but oh well, I developed these decks over the past month. I'll write a short story about how it went haha =P.
I went 4-1 in the round robin, the top 4 went on to playoffs, and I finished top 2 (we didn't play a "top 2" match because it had already been a long day and we only needed to finish top 2 to advance haha). It was actually pretty fun. There were 12 total participants.
The one guy I lost to in the round robin, I actually matched up against him in the playoffs, and I beat him. He had even warlock, taunt druid, and quest warrior (I banned the warrior both times, he banned the rogue both times). The main reason I lost the first time against him was, I just couldn't draw my answers in time, and he had all his answers in time. I think I managed to beat his taunt druid with my control priest (somehow). It actually happened both rounds haha.
I was told it was a little strange to bring the odd rogue (one aggro deck between two slower decks). I mainly brought it because those three were the ones I felt most comfortable with (the odd rogue was banned most times anyways).
Also, for anyone wondering about what the tournament meta was, there were a lot of taunt druids. A couple token druids were mixed in. Surprisingly no tempo/burn mage. Lots of quest warriors and quest priests as well. I don't know if there was a single hunter actually.
The next stage of the tournament will be in July, and it'll probably be best of 5 they're saying... I'm gonna need to add another deck to my repertoire. Probably taunt druid or quest warrior.
