So, I hosted - or attempted to, anyway - a private Fireside Gathering for the pre-release. Unfortunately, not all went according to plan this time.
Everything started as it should.
Host can pick Brawls from the website before the event. Pre-release Brawls are not shown on the website, but they were offered in the Fireside Gathering itself as usual in addition to the selected regular Brawls.
Host logs in to Hearthstone and is prompted to set up the Gathering. Hearthstone client checks the Wifi the host is on for the event and asks the host to confirm that it is the right one. You can also have it scan for additional nearby access points.
Time to play!
Unfortunately, this time my event was plagued with issues:
Only the host was able to see the Fireside Gathering from PC, even though all the computers were on the same wifi. I checked that location services on the PCs were on, but this did not help.
Mobile phone was able to see the Fireside Gathering and join it, but no other players were found, even though players were in the Fireside Gathering. Therefore, no games could be played, as there were no opponents. Trying to join the same Brawl just gave a message that no opponents were found.
It used to be the case that if you join a Fireside Gathering on mobile, you are still there on PC as well. We tried this as a workaround, but the Gathering could no longer be found when the account was logged back in on PC.
So, sadly, this time I did not get to play any games. This was all done on the exact same hardware that was used without any issues back in Rastakhan pre-release in December. Software updates have of course happened in the meanwhile, including Hearthstone updates.
Lo and behold, tonight my Fireside Gathering that refused to work yesterday worked perfectly with the same equipment and no adjustments done. Every computer (desktops, laptops) and mobile device worked fine. These are sometimes mysterious things.
