They probably learned from other games, where rewards and progression, which can be bought for money, gives the player a feeling of achievement from playing. The RNG makes the game feel less repetitive and give some "epic" moments, that the player will then try again and again to experience. Dailies encourage regular playing through FOMO which then adds a feeling of the game being a personal work project.
I wouldn't call it anymore manipulation than so many other forms of entertainment. Advertising is more manipulative IMO, but they definitely got some good gamer psychology going in the concept. "free to play/nothing to lose" where you can save 100s on packs by just playing all the time ;)
I think as long as you enjoy your hobby, you are just investing time and maybe money into having fun like everybody else. If you feel that you have to play and maybe even get anxious from being away, then you should probably start going out a bit more and try to appreciate the joys of socializing instead :) (sorry if that sounded arrogant)

Damn, dude, I love how most people here seem to have at least one hundred true friends in real life to "appreciate the joys of socializing" everyday, but many have less social skills than a slug. Jesus Christ... -.-
Personally, i dont think that im addicted to it.....
To be honest i playing HS just for fun, playing only fun/meme decks in wild format bcz i dont have time tryharding to fit in the current meta. After hard day of work i find this kinda relaxing ..... simply just log in and make some fast games ... just to click around and take my mind off from the bullshit of the day.

Some people are very serious when they write things like this (remember the anxiety threat?), some are just jesting. I didn't mean to turn your threat into some deep break down friend :)

There is an old thread about this (https://www.hearthpwn.com/forums/hearthstone-general/general-discussion/219727-is-hearthstone-addictive), but I decided to start a new one for obvious reasons.
Discuss! :D
