For fun I've decided to do the ReaverRyan challenge from scratch F2P, and I'm going through all the ranks with a free pally deck. I haven't yet graduated to regular ranks where wild is unlocked.
instead I'm stuck on ranks 1 to 10 of apprentice. Queue times are around 4 to 5 minutes. and I'm ONLY facing top tier meta decks that are EXPENSIVE. My "new player" free account is not competitive at all.
I've literally not faced one F2P or remotely comparable to a new player's deck. No cards that aren't brand new, competitive and meta (unlike you'd expect them to match with in the "apprentice" ranks (or even sub Diamond 5 for that matter).
I have no clue how this match making works. Not one card that's not from a top HS replay deck that someone would've needed to purchase the bundle to get.
If queue times were quick I'd kinda get it, but I'm waiting 5 minutes per game. what a joke.
I have to say if I weren't doing this for sport but brand new I'd have quit a long time ago.
If you don't have good deck at rank 1-10, you do something wrong. Look at Trump series from few weeks ago.
Still I agree, for a really new player who does not know what to do and wants to stay f2p it's difficult. Yet this game is not designed to make f2p players life easy.
5 min queue implies that it can't match around your level, I'd suggest. Thus you're being matched outside the NPE stuff, eventually. Heavy implication of not many newer players.
If you think it's horrible then go back in time be a new player in 2015 with no duplicate protection, no lego in first 10 packs, no reward track, no free lego or legendary quest on expansion day, nothing

At least there were other players with similar collections, and a much bigger player pool so the skillgap was much wider. Also, decks in general were much less expensive back then.
I am quite angry they didn't allow the "core" collection in the "classic" mode. Playing "Classic" for free would have been a great way for new players to get into the game!

It's a bad timing I guess. Until the previous expansion you could relatively easily cruise through the apprentice ranks with some sort of budget Aggro DH list. I was also considering doing the ReaverRyan challenge, but if you need to already invest hours just to start playing at bronze10 wild, then I think I'll pass...
Seems like every part of this would be better if there were more new players. Unfortunately, bad press and the perennial complaints about every new expansion have probably driven those numbers significantly downward.

Yes and not to forget the questline get 3 wins with a specific class which was a pain if you crafted a specific deck and especially if it was a class that had no budget decks like priest or druid and you had to constantly face mech mage/warlock or smt.
It's been a LONG time since I was new but I got a friend to play like 6 months ago and he had the same experience. He was getting wrecked by meta decks and he was still with the basic mage deck and only a few new cards he acquired from a couple packs. I don't know if it's changed now but I watched him play against straight meta decks. I believe the OP.
I do not think the new player experience is great now, but it has improved.
My first experience with Hearthstone was right after full launch. I had played many CCG though out the years, so I thought I would give this one a try. Got though tutorial fine and started playing games vs people. About my 3rd game, I played a mage. They played a secret, and I had no clue what that was. Nothing in game ever brought up that you could do anything on the other player's turn. I got so upset that I uninstalled and did not pick the game up until GVG came out.
The next time I was messing around with a new account was a little before the new player ranks were added. I had been playing for a while, so I knew how to play. My very first game at Rank 25 was a golden portrait, Legend Card Back Freeze Mage. Not a good experience for a new player to go into.
There are a lot of good quality of life improvements, but I think on boarding could be revised.
I've done the New Player Experience on a different region during the last few weeks and could play a decent core DH (thanks to Illidari Inquisitor) until rank 25, facing mostly bad decks or incomplete cheap meta decks.
That's 45 stars, so even supposing 100% winrate (which I might have achieved) and hence 2 stars per win after the 2nd win, that's still at least 2+43/2=23 opponents with actual poorly optimised decks. Different opponents even, as I had not met anyone twice.
However, after that point, I noticed queue times increasing meta decks popping everytime, including players with older paid skins (i.e. N'zoth) or golden heroes. It's likely that as my MMR skyrocketed, I was no longer being matched with new players.
I would assume that had I kept a bad winrate, I would've continued to be matched with more of the same clueless opponents as before.
At least it will come down to two options. You punish your self with endless arena runs and quit you life for collecting cards or you spend money. A lot money

I love the way you blame the press and the people complaining and not blizzard. If blizzard did a good job they would get good press and praise.

How could you have quit a long time ago if you are brand new?

As f2p player cant do much more, than Arena. Free cards and the best way to collect more cards/gold.

There is no new player experience. There is only hell. I cannot grasp how and why a new person would come to this game.
