It's that time of year again. The last time I made a thread like this was with the release of Rise of Shadows. So community, what is your current favorite expansion to date and why? My tied two are still GvG and Knights of the Frozen Throne, but I do have to say, Uldum has left quite an impression. With 17 whole expansions in the game, not including adventures, I'm sure each one has its own following. I look forward to hearing everyone's current thoughts and opinions!
I guess my opinion might not be a popular one, but I'm choosing Ashes of Outland.
This expansion came out at a time in my life (and probably many others) where things felt weird and uncertain, and I legitimately really looked forward to this expansion. Not only did it present me with a wild nostalgia trip, being centered around the Burning Crusade expansion of WoW (which came out shortly after I started the game), but it also introduced all the cool spell mage cards that everyone definitely doesn't hate right now.
Furthermore, Shadowjeweler Hanar and the return of rogue secrets was also very exciting and I think this expansion gave me that "inspired" sort of feeling to create decks.
So, I guess, those things combined with the fact that I wasn't really into this game prior to Rise of Shadows is why I think AoO stands out the most in my mind.
I went for Uldum. WotOG was surely also great, but I think Uldum had a more diverse meta, that still enabled many aggressive and defensive deck strategies. I don't recall any deck or class being particularly problematic either. Unlike Ungoro, that had rogue and freeze mage driving people mad, KotFT with Priests and druids en masse, Gadgetzan.... XD .
Uldum seemed exceptionally unproblematic. It made the meta slower in contrast to RoS and introduced my favorite card (corrupt the waters).
The only thing I really disliked about that expansion was puzzle box, which wasn't THAT bad for the game in the end.
Meta-wise, probably Kobolds for me; it's kinda nostalgic cause that's when I started playing for real and it had some of my favorite decks of all time, like Secret Mage with Aluneth and Cubelock.
Flavor-wise tho, Rastakhan's Rumble is a no-brainer for me. Trolls are my favorite race from WoW, and the idea of a troll gladiator event seemed so cool. The expansion really sucked when it comes to cards, but it was just so great when it comes to flavor. Not to mention it had one of my favorite hero portraits of all time (and definitely favorite Shaman) - King Rastakhan.
Well, I haven't experienced most expansions between 2016 and 2020, so I can't really say anything about the metas, but I do remember GvG and Old Gods fondly, and even without the emotional factor, there are many cards from these expansions that are still relevant in Wild. If we go for a power level standpoint alone, I guess it's Frozen Throne or Scholomance, and if we're talking flavor it's 100% Old Gods followed by Gadgetzan or Witchwood (Darkmoon seemed cool at first, given the amazing trailer, but it didn't click with me as much as, say, Barrens, where the cards really give you the feel of the theme).
That is, until they release an expansion focused on Dwarfs, that'd be no contest for me.
Gosh, Un'Goro really rocked for me. Quests are such a unique card type and every class got a cool one. It was the first expansion that introduced 2 legendaries per class instead of 1 per class and a ton of garbo Neutral legendaries. It had an awesome setting, which I had actually been to in my short time playing WoW. It was filled with Dinosaurs - ugh it just rocked super hard.
Even the meta was fun as I remember it - every class had a deck they could play with that was competent. Un'Goro just puts a big smile on my face.

Knights brought the Hero cards, so that's a no brainer choice really.
