Basically the title. The only arguments I've seen so far are that it makes them less exclusive (which is exactly the reason they're re-introduced to begin with) or less valuable to collectors. Cardbacks are in-tradable, you can't assign a market value to them, so the only value they have is the one you give them for yourself.
I really don't give a damn about cardbacks- they handed out far too many, they are worthless. If they were ever to have any value to me, they'd have to be more limited, vastly more, like only for serious in game achievement, not this 1-a-month. Too late for that now.
Thing I understand: people complaining about unbalanced cards. What fun is a game that's too hard to win?
Thing I do not understand: people complaining about cosmetic things like cardbacks. They're just a bunch of pixels that have no effect on the game!
Yes, I get feeling cheated of achievements, but I don't get it in the way when people complain that they've been here since beta and so forth. Good for you? But why should other people be punished for a game you heard about in 2014, but the rest of us didn't come upon it until later?
It's mainly a sign that you have been around for a long time, this isn't exclusive to Hearthstone. Just think of them as Beta rewards when a new game releases or collector's edition perks. You were there 5 years ago, the aesthetic is optional.
That said, I think I would rather make them release cardbacks that are similiar, but still different from the original in minor ways.
For example the Love is in the Air cardback could return in red, not pink, for the next Valentines Day
Call me old fashioned but I just don't like the practice of bringing back special card backs or heros such as pre-order ones or special event ones. I understand it's only a digital card game but I like that you could earn things and not have them just given to you later for gold or whatever. I don't blame anyone for taking them but imo the people who complained nonstop for tyrande or khadgar are just as bad as the people who whine about people having them
Having missed some of the much earlier cardbacks, like Black Temple, I'm very happy to possibly get a complete, or more complete, collection in the near future.
Just people who think they are the center of the universe and as a consequence of that, more important than others. It's that simple.
They have a cosmetic that you don't have, but they don't feel good about having the cosmetic, the feel good about you not having it and how it makes them different than you, and immediately hate having that cosmetic once you get your hands on it.
Kind of like people who stop loving/watching some TV shows when they get mainstream, how insane is that lol?
So I disagree with the statement that collectors think like that. Collectors enjoy their collection, not the emptyness of other's.
Most people are self centered toxic morons, in fact all of us are at some points in our life. It's just that a few people have this attitude with everything, including digital freaking card backs
Regardless of the game being digital card backs, hero portraits, or limited golden version of cards have a collectors value to them. If you have one then you either competed a limited time task, played many years ago, or attended a unique event. If these items return to the game at a later date it disrespects the players who were here during the original limited time release. With new portraits and card backs being added all the time there is even less value in adding old versions to the game again.
I've genuinely never paid a second's attention to someone's card back, and cannot fathom someone caring about this. As an aside, I feel the same way about different heroes. I could not care less if you're playing Guldan or Nemsy: you're a warlock. Got it.
That said, to each his own. If that's how you get your ya-ya's, go for it.

I cannot fathom your thinking. Disrespect is such a weird word to use in this context.
Well, it's kind of collectible. If you collect things, you want to have rare ones, which not many others have. I myself don't care, it's not physical card game, therefore these have 0 value for me. But for some people they do, I understand this and respect their view. So giving out to others the rarest bits of their collection can be infuriating for them, I get it.

They have 148 different cardbacks now, and I doubt if anyone in the world knows what all of them mean. That art department must be low on work to have time to make that many!
I also don't care much about card backs, but what is the point of collecting something in a specific way if you can get it later anyway? Blizzard has been trying to hype these useless cosmetic items since release, so devaluing them even further makes no sense. I understand the frustration!

There’s no more value to card backs than to cards. When Blizz shuts down the servers, we’ll sell our collections to buy some MTG cards. No wait.
Take a walk on the wild side...
That doesn't really add anything to the topic, unfortunately. You can use the same argument to dis-value basically anything, up to life itself.
SICK BURN!!!! Why do people who complain about the game 1) play the game, and 2) spend time on a forum about the game???

Who cares about card backs? Aside from my Legend card back I could care less none of them are worth any money to me
Keymaster Alabaster come faster
Short answer: because they have them
The same people would shamelessly think the opposite if they would not own those card backs / cards / etc
I've genuinely never paid a second's attention to someone's card back, and cannot fathom someone caring about this. As an aside, I feel the same way about different heroes. I could not care less if you're playing Guldan or Nemsy: you're a warlock. Got it.

I like the idea about changing the colors of the old card backs. Best of both worlds for new and old players :)
OMG, this is so true. Nice post! :)
