Can you remember the last time you didn’t play a deck that either wasn’t in the top 5 on HSreplay or being played by Thijs that day? I’ve played plenty of games today and except 1 shaman deck I could tell you the deck list of every single one after they played the first card. Even played a few games in casual hoping to see some clever decks but all net decks.
I don’t know how blizz could encourage deck building again but they could make it so you never play the same class more than say twice in 10 games, even if it’s in casual. I understand that there are top tier decks and people who play those decks because they’re competitive, but there should be more options for people who want to play interesting games rather that the same priest, rogue and hunter decks that just play out the same way every single game.
I haven't seen a new deck in standard in a very long time. I'm starting to build a wild collection (buying old adventures). I hope i can see a more varied environment there but even if that's not the case i can still use the cards to make my own unique decks. Last month i almost made to legend for the first time with an off meta Highlander Quest Hunter that i created but DH ruined the dream. The class has ruined standard for me.
I've been mostly playing against the same decks on standard. I play secret pure pally, which I'm really enjoying atm, or Zayle's evil decks (as I've got a gold zayle shadow cloak). Sitting around gold 8 atm.
Probably the first time I faced a Replicator Paladin deck a few weeks ago. Other than that, it’s all the top HSReplay decks, mostly DH, Galakrond Rogue it Highlander Hunter. Really sucks.
Teron gorefiend otk mage deck with antiniodas and doubling the two mana 3/2 card which reduces cost of spells by one using khadgar.
Sounds like an interesting idea! I don’t mind otk decks as long as you’ve got to work for them and the deck has enough weaknesses to balance out the otk. I’m a big fan of MarkMcKz’s work.
I play faster version of reno mage, having no aoe but have early value minions, netherland portal and counterspell as the secrets. I spam whoops when priest try to clear my board but get reckd. Thus whoops mage is the deck's name.
I play the Shadow of Death Rogue - with Waxadred, Cursed Vagrant, Stowaway and other otherwise never played cards :D Today I killed HL Hunter with double King Krush. Messing with this deck around D10-D5 in standard and winrate is around 50%.
I don't think this is what you were looking for, but the biggest surprises I get from decks are when I get absolutely bamboozled by a play or card. As I tend to play in janky tiers it's often a player that has included a card that really doesn't fit with the rest of their deck, and may lead me to make a suboptimal response due to what I expect their deck to be like (ie. a turn 1 Leper Gnome from the opponent, implying that they're going to be going hyper aggro, so when playing something like a Primordial Rune I pick an anti-aggro card - only for them to turn out to be a control deck otherwise).
I can't think of any recent examples of that (being bamboozled by a misconstructed deck), but I do recall being bamboozled by an archetype I hadn't seen before (well, not in this form anyway). Paladin opponent played a turn 1 Uldum quest (play reborn minions to get a new hero power) then proceeded to play no reborn minions. I assumed they just hadn't included enough or something - then it turned out to be Death Knight Uther combo, using the quest purely to turn on the battlecry minions that give you a coin if you have a quest up (the coin giving more mana + refreshing the hero power via Auctioneer Beardo). I'd seen the combo before - I love doing it myself - but hadn't seen it done in this way, via a useless quest. :-P
Also, darn there now actually being a Bamboozle card! I've been referring to this type of 'trickery' as a bamboozle for years, and I'm not about to stop now. :-P
Every time I play DH it surprises me on how broken it is (the nerfs were kind of meaningless). I mean down to the fact that warglaives of azzinoth lets you attack again even after the weapon has been destroyed. It should be that you can attack with the weapon again, not with your hero. You get five attacks instead of four. I am just constantly surprised how much better each of their cards are than everyone elses lol.

What a childish way to derail a thread. You people are obsessed. I bet when someone asks you if you'd like to go large on your order you still manage to end up in a rant about Demon Hunter win rates being too large. Why not either actually contribute to the thread or just don't bother posting anything? Love on to the many salt threads.
Regarding the op, I ran in to some janky spell mage at diamond 2 ish and quickly discovered that I had no idea what to play around. It helped that they seemed to draw really well and apprentice and chenvalla early on absolutely ruined me. I'd mulliganed not expecting any early game from the mage and it backfired big time.
Standart is Netdeckers Realm and its boring, it always will be boring. So I get the argument of becoming a Wild player. Its way too expensive for me tho. :(
It's been a while since I've been truly surprised I guess. But man, I actually enjoy knowing what my opponent's deck is (and vice versa, to a point). At that point it's purely who can get more value out of their cards, knowing the answers your enemy may have.
Having said that, I've been playing a lot of very greedy "big druid" decks lately. Not really a top 5 deck or anywhere near, but I find it surprisingly more consistent than I would have thought haha.

I don't much follow mark but this happened vs me out of nowhere. I thought he would fatigue himself and the next thing he kept fireballing me for free. He also had the mage quest of what I can remeber. I also forget what he teron gorefiend ... I think the apprentice. It should be the apprentice. He maieved his antiniodas the turn before I believe. Man I forgot.

On the wild ladder, I'm surprised every time I queue into a deck that isn't Odd Demon Hunter these days.
But for real, I'm still pretty new to wild so I get surprised by decks somewhat regularly honestly.
i recently got hit by a mill rogue and c thun warrior (i only play wild)

Edit. No spell aoe. Reno is an aoe

Play wild, I fought a legend ranked 49 opponent with a crazy reno-rogue deck. Had no clue what cards he was running until he dropped zephrys,
YoU fAcE jArAxXuS eReDaR lOrD oF tHe BuRnInG lEgIoN MUAHAHAHAHAHA
I lost to a Mecha'thun Rogue the other day. I thought they were playing a N'Zoth, the Corruptor deck, so I figured I could out-value them with the Astral Tiger / Da Undatakah / Hadronox deck that I was playing. They dropped Anka, the Buried / Mecha'thun / Backstab to beat me, and I couldn't even be mad.

An armour control warrior with the legendary shield, I don't know if it's a known deck, but I'd never heard of it
Dragon libram paladin. Got my butt beat in a way that makes me believe all y'alls win/loss ratio conspiracy.
