I have been thinking about this for a while because I have given up playing any ranked games.
Before this whole new system, there was a sense of progression, say you reach rank 10 or 5. you felt like you have achieved something. Now that you can't even see the opponent's ranks, the sense of that feeling is gone. you don't know who you are facing, could it be a legend player or someone around your ranks? this type of curiosity is bad in my opinion. I have played some games when I reached legend (before I gave up playing), facing some plats and diamonds. Sometimes they would friend request me just to see my rank. The tone that comes from them is most of the time negative when referring to the matchup and rank.
This whole new system is pseudo. Ranks have no value. it does not matter if you are gold 5 or diamond 5. it does not mean a thing. This whole MMR system is very similar to the casual mode in HS. The progression in this new system is fake, it is beneath a hidden MMR.
I have been watching streamers playing meme decks at legend (around 25-30k rating) facing people who play river Crocolisks in Bronze. Most of the time they win against these possible new players. This may make those new players quit. Furthermore, people at legend facing non-legends: the legend players would lose more legends ranks if they lose than gain if they win. This may discourage legend players climbing the legend ladder.
Blizzard obviously understood the outrage there would be if the ranks were visible. That is why non-legend players cannot see ranks. People would quit because of the deemed unfairness in matchups. But the opposite is also true. not showing ranks create unnecessary confusion among new players and some non-legend players. Who am I facing? what is their rank? how are we matched? etc.
It has certainly discouraged me from playing ranked because I do not want to face people from diamond or plat.
You will only meet players of your rank when you stabilize at some rank, or, simply, reach your "elo hell". A point where you can't really climb, just keep going forth and backwards (like me, on dad legend, D5-2).
The MMR system checks that you are constantly winnning, so it determines that you don't belong in that especific ELO, and gives you higher elo players to fight. 10 years of Riot MMR shows us this (although MMR systems are NEVER 100% accurate)
And, of course, if you reach Legend and starts losing a lot, you will face Diamond and Platinum players that are on a win streak.
