So, I came across this deck playing on ladder about 3-4 weeks ago and thought it looked very fun and interesting. I am a (mostly)f2p and do not have Deathstalker Rexxar, Kathrena Winterwisp, or even the Charged Devilsaurs . I am sitting on about 5k dust and have been contemplating crafting the deck ever since that inspiring/fateful encounter a few weeks ago. At the very least, DK Rexxar seems like a safe and fun craft.
Now, my dilemma. I had only encountered that deck once, weeks ago. Until yesterday. I queued into 5 out of 7 matches against the deck. Herein lies my dilemma. I had logged in with the notion that it might be the day to go ahead and pull the trigger on the deck. But I cant get behind something that plagues the ladder incessantly. Eff you, Cubes. Take a hike, Spiteful Druid. And I'll see you in hell, Even Pally.
Now, my question is, can anyone explain why the sudden surge in popularity for this archetype? Did last week's Brawl send everyone into a DK Hunter frenzy? Did I just get extremely lucky/unlucky in running into almost nothing but this deck by pure chance yesterday? I just find it so odd that I've been thinking about experimenting with this archetype for literally weeks, and then as I am just about to pull the trigger on it, it becomes the flavor of the month.
It should be the deck that is called "Big Hunter" on the front page of hearthpwn. And it is popular because it is pretty good in this meta.
Yes, but my question is why, seemingly overnight, did this archetype become so popular. I play HS everyday and have literally encoutered the deck once before yesterday.
It seems like someone just created a deck that is strong for hunter, using the same broken mechanics that other classes enjoy. After having spell hunter shoved down our throat and then the lackluster dragon we got this time, I have no reservations about using this deck to climb the ladder, even if it is cancer. It is very gratifying to trash some smug emote-spamming mage with a class that they had previously considered an auto-win. In other words, a lot of hunter players are excited about finally being able to play the class again.

I regularly encountered it in the past two/three weeks. And I play very little at present. I guess the reason you encountered it not at all is just rng.
It's popular because the meta slowed down a lot after the nerf and recruit hunter is really good at killing slower decks. Just play whatever you think is fun and don't worry about how popular it is.

I am a lowly rank 10ish player and am not used to seeing the same few decks ad nauseum. So when it does happen, it really rubs me the wrong way. And I'd hate to be "a part of the problem". But I suppose you are right. I should be able to play the decks that look interesting and fun to me. And learn to stop worrying and love the bomb. It's just hard as a F2P, my resources are very finite and am having a bit of crafting anxiety in this particular case.
Honestly the DK Rexxar is crazy fun and versatile. Like you said in your post, him alone is a safe craft. But since you're a F2P player and your resources are scarce I would give it a bit of thought before going all-in. A deck that is viable now, may not be viable in the future. And the cards you need to craft are not viable in any other decks. So for me the rule of thumb is: Craft neutrals. Those are versatile enough to be played in at least one deck per expansion meta. If you REALLY like the deck and think you'll have fun with it, even though it may end abruptly if the deck looses steam, go for it! Dust is there to be used mainly for fun. I for one crafted Togwaggle druid and am loving it!

Charged Devilsaur is staple in a good number of recruit/OTK decks, you could start from there, and craft Rexxar as well since it's good in every "slower" Hunter deck.

I started seeing recruit hunter a lot at the end of last week. Hunter has become about 35% of my opponents the past few days haha. I just can't beat those bastards either, unless I get lucky with my draw.
I do agree with you though. I can't bring myself to play oppressive decks like that (to me, it is oppressive, I hate any deck that can cheat out like 15 mana of minions in a single turn - Carnivorous Cube + Play Dead in this case, or even just a single play dead lol). It's a shame because I got all the pieces for cubelock early on. My free weapon was the skull back in K&C, free dk was warlock. The deck was also terribly boring to play I found.
Honestly, you can try to build it if you want. My main problem with playing these super popular decks is, everybody has played against your deck a million times. They know what you're going to play before you play it, so there's not much room for interesting plays or counter plays. You just pray you don't draw Kathrena Winterwisp before Seeping Oozling, cheat out those huge charge minions, and watch people cry. Obviously if you draw Kathrena early on, you might be the one crying, but still haha. I just personally don't have fun with those high roll-y decks.

I was okay with the cost of the deck because is looked so fun and unique. Still looks just as fun. But it loses magic with popularity. Call me a hipster doofus, i suppose haha. I think I'm gonna go through with it anyway. But maybe I'll take your advice and wait it out just a bit more to see if the recent surge is at all temporary.
While we are on the subject of Deathstalker Rexxar, can anyone tell me how the beasts interact with N'Zoth, the Corruptor. Do you get your Deathrattle hybrids back?

Free to try and find a game, dealing cards for sorrow, cards for pain.

Many streamers show this deck so its became popular. Better listen the advice and craft classic cards + some new cards. But never invest all in :)
