Please don't troll me, I have been playing Magic for years and put some considerate money into this set so I could catch up to everyone who has been playing it from the beginning. What is the trick to breaking through the ranks?
I'm sure I'm not the only one that feels this way but I definitely feel like every deck I try, Blizzard throws me against the type to destroy me instantly. I play quest rogue, I get trounced. I play murloc shaman I get trounced. I play elemental shaman I get trounced. All by hunters seemingly, so I try hunter and guess what, I get trounced. So having not ever tried to beat past rank 20 in the past, what am I doing wrong. Should I stay with a deck even if it keeps losing? DO I keep changing decks? Is my years in magic and WoW TCG just not translating well so I need to play noob-ish decks? I will say one thing that's aggravating me is how there are still SO many people at rank 18 playing mage ttk decks, warrior pirate decks, rogue quest decks, murloc shaman decks, etc. I thought most of those would have gone higher up and weeded out.
To answer anyone genuinely trying to help me in advance. I don't have a particularly favorite style. I just like to win lol. I like control decks often enough, I also like super aggro top-decking decks.
At the end of the day these results might be my fault for trying other people's decks.
It's like I was doing well as an elemental shaman there and then suddenly all these hunter decks start popping up and annihilating me! I'm actually about to revisit that 84% winrate shaman deck and update it with elementals, see how that works.

Hearthstone, the only place where Shaman isn't nerfed to hell
I climbed to rank 5 from rank 13 in one day with elemental tempo mage. I just climbed to rank 4 with Exodia... Thing is, I'm a mage main and I have numerous hours of tempo and freeze mage experience under my belt. Maybe not having a particular style is what's keeping you from mastering something, you're staying a jack of all trades...
That's the thing with a new expansion, no list is refined to the point of it being a 55% win rate that will let you climb with a little time investment. You need to build something not only good, but that you're good with. Once the meta settles and tier 1 decks will be figured out I'm pretty sure you'll be able to break ranks with a tier 1 deck, but for now you have to find a deck that you're not making many mistakes with. A decent deck that you master is usually better than a god deck you make little mistakes with.
Awesome thanks! Makes a lot of sense, I think one thing that helped me succeed in Magic was smaller meta and I could easily figure out how to adjust my deck. It's been a bit harder being on a global meta but I am working at it! So what would you suggest then in the way of building my deck and whatnot, go ahead and just play standard while refining my deck? Or just play casual while refining it? And about how many matches of losing should I go before refining? (because maybe it's luck of draw vs a bad deck)

Unfortunately, that's just how the game is right now. Having been to legend multiple seasons in a row (feel free to add me, ProtoTitan#1525) it really just comes down to strategy and how well you know a deck until around rank 14-13 which is where the decks tend to become a little bit of a rock paper scissor match. My best advise is to learn the deck your lost comfortable with inside and out, and hopefully with some work you can start to climb. Another bit of advise, I've found once you've lost two in a row the tilt is real. Take a break, it spares you losing even more
Edit: I also used to play MTG quite a lot, the mindsets for the games are totally backwards. Rewiring to hearthstone is necessary
I'm a bad player ... returned 1.5m ago after 7m break and ... I was able to climb 15 twice ... it's not that hard between 20 and 15 ...
Maybe - because you are a MTG player - you overcomplicating your plays like trying to trade with face decks or so? Watch few "youtubes" about currently picked archetype just to have an idea how to pilot the deck? Try some discardlock or so - those are easy to play, and - in most cases - cheap :)

First off, I'd like to thank everyone for not telling me to grow up and quit being salty or whatever. All this advice is SUPER helpful, so thanks a ton! I will definitely add you. So essentially, I can win ranks 20-15 with any deck really, it's just better that I stick to a deck and get comfortable with the ins and outs. Haha, and good plan on the break!

Yaaaaa, I think I have found that sometimes I go to kill creatures that I should not be, and should be playing more face games. Good idea on watching YouTube. I guess one nice thing is that since everyone plays the same decks I just need to learn how what to watch for which comes by a lot of play time...

honestly felt the same. turns out that everyoneabout "rotation will slow the meta" was wrong, so my issue was all my control and midrange decks. You wanna hit 15 look up an aggro deck. I recommend hunter rn it's super cheap a deck that cost less than a legendary made it on the recent top decks of the week page. Take it, run it, tweak it to your advantage, you'll be 15+ in no time
THEN you can use control type decks. I think higher elos just offer longer games and thus more options, but lower ranks are dominated by aggressiveness. Thats just a theory from my own climbs tho. I've never made it past ten unfortunately ;-; Best of luck my guy

Hi i'm Tyler and I play hearthstone and watch anime.
Sometimes i make cards. I'd like to do that for a career one day if ever possible.
I suggest sticking with one deck, as some of the previous posters said. For me, I tend to have ebbs and flows of wins, and it seems that as I get used to a deck and make a few minor changes I'll go on a long win streak. For instance I built a Quest Mage that was just so-so, winning a game or two, then losing about the same. I cut some cards that weren't working, added two Arcane Golems in addition to the Archmage, and won the next seven games in a row.
I always shoot for rank 15 to get the Golden Rare, and rank 5 for the Golden Epic if I have a little more time to play in a particular month. If you keep plugging away with one deck for a while, making a few changes every time you have a few loses, you'll probably get to a respectable rank.
The high ranks are really tough to find a good deck for because there is no meta there. If I were you, I'd pick a proactive deck that you feel comfortable with and stick with it regardless of results until you get the mulligan down and can break through. Personally, I've found garden rogue variants to be incredible around rank 4, but I can't say that it will be much help at rank 18 especially if you've seen any pirate warriors.
The reason you see so many of the "cancer" decks in higher ranks is because there are a lot of people like you who get frustrated and cycle through the best decks without ever taking the time to properly learn mulligans and macro for their decks. If you stick to one, it should put you above the rest of the players.
I've been playing a discard warlock (without quest) and just managed to get to rank 12 today (previous highest I've gotten is 14 so win), part of that might be because people are still experimenting with decks, I've a very good win ratio against rogue (so far), personal struggle abit against the taunt quest, and elemental shaman
The netdecks just aren't that good right now and we've got a lot of new cards in the mix that everyone is unfamiliar with. The end result is those with good understanding of the fundamentals are doing stupidly well on ladder right now, they make less misplays, build better decks and substitute better as they have a better understanding of how good or a bad a card is likely to be and how to get the best out of them. Honestly, that's arena and brawl players, as apposed to those who were just used to playing ladder with tier 1 and 2 netdecks.
Got pissed at quest rogues, made an agressive hunter beast deck, went from rank 18 to rank 9 in 3 hours with just 3 losses. It's all about countering the meta :') fun fact, I didn't even meet that many rogues, it just happens hunter stomps every other deck, except maybe murloc shaman.
Going to be honest here, but most of the time one can only get so far in the ranking system. If you copy a "Top 1 Legend deck" and you are a rank 18 player, then you will only be able to maybe get to rank 16. If you are having trouble ranking up then i would suggest asking someone to help improve your gameplay.

Never had any problem climbing till 5 while having good cards.. currently playing midrange handbuff taunt wallet paladin at rank 10 so far and I played just a bit.

I normally sit around 13-15 at the end of each month. I am now at 10 and hopefully still climbing. I am using this deck.
If you can save some dust up give it a try
